The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and come sit down with me. Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what's coming our way.

First up, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim picture for the next couple of weeks at Kijkduin. This beach/jetty break is looking at a long, drawn-out run of pretty average to downright ugly conditions. The first solid hint of anything surfable doesn't really show up until late in the game, and even then, the quality is a major question mark.

We kick off on Monday, the 17th of August. There’s a little bump in the water at 1ft from the NNW, but that’s all we get. The wind is howling straight onshore. It’s a total mess. This theme is the headline for a solid week or more. Day after day, we’re looking at weak energy, and with the combined energy rarely nudging above 100 (most days it’s in the 10s, 20s, or 40s range), there's just nothing to get excited about. The wind is almost always cross-on or straight onshore, serving up nothing but chop.

The one tiny glimmer in the first week is on Monday, the 24th of August. We get a tiny 2ft wave from the north, but the wind goes light easterly, turning slightly offshore. The report says "clean." It'd be glassy, but with an energy reading of just 25, you'd be on a longboard fighting for a knee-high ripple. Not worth the drive.

Then it goes quiet again. After the 24th, we drop back to almost nothing for a few days with stronger winds. The first sign of proper size comes on Thursday, the 27th of August. The swell bumps up to 4ft in the morning, and then 6ft in the afternoon from the WSW. The combined energy jumps to 108 and then 218, so there's finally some real power in the water. But here’s the catch – the wind is a fresh onshore breeze of 22 mph. It's going to be a chunky, wind-blown mess. The morning might be slightly less awful, but that 6ft with onshore wind is going to be closing out and dumping. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, if I had to watch it, I'd say it looks more promising for the kite surfers than anyone with a paddle.

The last days of the month and into September offer a bit more size, with 5ft swells showing up on the 28th of August and the 1st of September. On the 1st of September, a Tuesday, we finally, *finally*, get a clean forecast. The wind swings offshore from the south at 19-22 mph, cleaning up the 4ft to 5ft WNW swell. The energy reading is a solid 124. This is the standout. It's a long way off, so treat it as promising, but the wind and swell direction finally line up for a clean wave. Kijkduin is exposed to the NNW, and while this is a WSW/WNW swell, it might wrap in just enough to be rideable.

The Bottom Line: There is a blank, ugly run for over a week. The only two dates you should circle are the morning of Thursday, 27th of August for a messy but powerful 6ft swell if you're an expert (and a masochist), and the morning of Tuesday, the 1st of September for what should be the cleanest, most surfable conditions of the whole run with clean 5ft waves.

Rusty.
