The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – this stretch ahead for Kijkduin is a tough one to call good surf. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for any decent waves. From the start on Sunday, July 19th through to the end of the first week, we’re staring at a long run of grim conditions. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy figures barely scraping into the moderate range at best (196 for the first reading), but mostly stuck below 100 for the rest of the period. The wind is a constant problem too, almost always cross-onshore or onshore, chopping everything up.
The one real standout window is a short one, and it’s a bit of a tease. On Tuesday morning, July 28th, we finally get a break in the weather. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the north-northwest at just 3 mph. Swell is tiny, only 3 ft from the northwest with a short period of 6 seconds, but that glassy conditions is a rare gift. The combined energy is weak (54), but for a beach/jetty setup like Kijkduin, it’ll be clean and small. This is the best we’ve got, but it’s really only for the absolute beginner or someone who just wants to float around with no wind. The water temperature is a massive 69°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll be in for a warm bath.
Then there’s another small glimmer on Wednesday morning, July 29th. Early, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the south-southeast at 6 mph, the surf is a bit bigger at 4 ft from the northwest (period 6 seconds, energy 77). It’ll be clean, but again, just ordinary waves. The rest of the period is a washout. From July 30th onward, the swell drops off a cliff, with heights under 2 ft and energy values in the teens and single digits. The wind picks up, often fresh, and the setup at Kijkduin is just not producing anything worth paddling for. Honestly, for a beach/jetty break like this with that persistent onshore wind, you’d be better off looking for a kite session if you’re into that – the wind is plenty strong but the waves are too small and messy.
So, to sum it up: the best window is that Tuesday morning, July 28th for glassy, tiny waves. The Wednesday morning, July 29th is a runner-up with cleaner conditions but still small. After that, it’s a long, flat, windy slog. The 16-day window is a dud, plain and simple. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
