The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Kijkduin has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a grim stretch for Kijkduin. The water is a staggering 69°F right now, which is 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, but it’s about the only thing that’s out of the ordinary. For the surf, we’re looking at a long, dry spell of poor conditions. The first proper window of opportunity doesn’t roll around until Saturday, July 25th, so we’ve got a solid week and a half of flat, choppy, and onshore junk to sit through first.
The first couple of days are just a write-off. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are all small, weak windswell with cross-shore breezes, keeping the waves choppy and messy. Nothing over 3 ft, periods are a short 5 seconds, and the combined energy is pathetic – down in the single digits and 20s. Friday the 17th through to the 24th is more of the same: small, weak, and mostly cross-onshore. The swell tries to tick up a bit on the 19th, but it’s still poor surf with moderate winds.
It’s not until Saturday, July 25th, that things finally get a pulse. The morning brings a jump in swell to 6 ft from the NNW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 356 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore from the NW, which is a huge positive – that should clean things up. But by the afternoon, the swell is pushing 8 ft from the NNW with an 8-second period, and the energy is a strong 804. That’s big for Kijkduin, and honestly, it’s going to be only for experts. It’s a beach setup, so that longer period groundswell might break a bit straight, but with light winds, it could be the pick of the whole forecast.
Sunday the 26th is a letdown. Fresh onshore winds from the WNW spoil the 6 ft swell, creating lumpy, blown-out junk. The energy drops back to 316. After that, the following week fades quickly into the same poor pattern we saw before. The 27th and 28th are cross-shore winds with small, weak swell, and you’re looking at combined energy in the 40s and 60s. The last couple of days of July are limp and barely worth a mention.
The standout: If you’re an experienced surfer and you’ve been waiting, Saturday 25th July is your only real shot. The morning session looks best – 6 ft, an offshore breeze, and clean conditions. The afternoon is a beast at 8 ft, but that’s expert territory, and the crowds are likely. Don’t hold your breath for the rest of the fortnight.
Rusty.
