Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kijkduin over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with each other: this outlook for Kijkduin is a long, tough stretch. The entire 16-day window is a real struggle for surfable waves, but we’ll break it down day by day.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a big gap right at the start. From Wednesday the 8th of July right through until the morning of Monday the 20th of July, there’s simply nothing worth paddling out for. Every session is marked as poor surf conditions. Wind is a constant problem, mostly cross-onshore, onshore, or just messy and strong, and the swell is tiny – rarely getting above 2ft, with short, weak periods. The combined swell energy stays under 100 (as low as 4) right up until late in the run, so weak doesn’t even cover it. It’s a bleak stretch for anyone trying to surf.
Now, we finally get a flicker of hope on the morning of Monday the 20th of July. For that one morning session, the score finally edges above zero, hitting a 1. Kijkduin is a beach/jetty setup, exposed to swell from the NNW, and the optimum direction is from the NW. On Monday morning we’ve got a small 2ft swell coming from the N, with an 8-second period. The combined swell energy climbs to a modest 57. The wind is from the ENE at 9 mph, which is a nice cross-offshore breeze, leaving the water clean. It’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That is our one and only standout window. The swell direction is NNW, so close to the optimum, and the wind is clean. But it’s small, and the period is still short (8 seconds is right on the edge of being meaningful). This is not a day for beginners; the swell is under 5ft, so it’s fine for intermediates, but the quality is just very ordinary. There won’t be much power. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so it could get a bit busy with everyone chasing the same slim pickings.
After that brief moment, it’s right back to poor conditions for the rest of the period, with onshore winds and fading swell. There is one interesting note on the afternoon of Thursday the 16th of July, where the wind goes completely glassy (0 mph from the ENE), but the swell is only 1ft with a 5-second period – so flat and gutless despite the perfection.
So to sum it up: this is a tough one. It’s a two-week blank with one morning in the third week that might give you a couple of small, clean waves. Don’t get your hopes up, but if you’re desperate, Monday the 20th of July morning is the only window.
Rusty.
