Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at this Kijkduin forecast, but in feet and miles per hour for you.
To be honest, mate, this is a bleak 16-day stretch. The first real wave to even mention doesn’t come until Thursday, July 16th. That means over a week and a half of basically nothing worth getting wet for. You’re looking at a long gap of flat, messy junk.
Starting on Sunday, July 5th, it’s a total loss. There’s a 3ft swell from the NW, but it’s got a terrible period of 6 seconds – just wind chop. A moderate onshore breeze from the WNW at 12 mph makes a mess of it. The combined swell energy is a weak 60 (moderate energy). The water temperature is a very unusual 68°F, which is 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. Doesn’t help the surf, though.
From Monday, July 6th, all the way through Wednesday, July 15th, it’s brutal. Swell drops to between 1ft and 3ft, with periods of 4 to 6 seconds. Mostly cross-onshore winds. There’s a brief moment of glass on the morning of Thursday, July 9th, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft. Not worth it. Combined energy is all under 100 (weak to moderate), and every report says “poor surf conditions.”
The one small glimmer comes Thursday afternoon, July 16th. It turns glassy, and for the only time in the whole forecast, it rates as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The swell is just 3ft from the NNW with a 5-second period. Combined energy is only 41 (weak). So the best on offer is still very marginal. It’s a beach/jetty break (Kijkduin), exposed to that NW/NNW swell, and the direction matches the optimum, but there’s no power. Might be okay for a beginner on a foam board, but for anyone else, it’s a long paddle for weak, short-period slop. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have company.
After that, Saturday, July 18th, shows a bump to 5ft – 6ft with a 7-second period, but a fresh cross-onshore wind at 18 mph ruins it, making it lumpy and choppy. Combined energy hits 270 (moderate), but it’s still “poor surf conditions.” Too big for beginners, and too messy for anyone else. Looks more like a kiteboarding day than a surfing day.
So, for a surfer, the only real hope is that Thursday afternoon, July 16th, for a small, clean, but very weak session. It’s not much, but in this area, these long flat spells are pretty normal. Forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
