G’day, I’m Rusty. Let me be straight with ya – if you’re hanging for a wave at Kijkduin over the next couple of weeks, you’re gonna be doing a lot of waiting. This stretch looks almost completely flat and messy for days on end, so strap in for a long quiet spell.
The first sign of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Monday the 20th of July. That morning, Kijkduin (this is a beach/jetty setup) finally sees a pulse of life: a 5ft northwest swell, period around 8 seconds, with light offshore winds out of the south-southwest. The water’s sitting at a very warm 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a few degrees above what you’d expect, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home. The combined energy hits 277 (moderate wave energy) and the morning looks clean. That Monday morning session is the one standout in this entire 16-day window – a rare glimmer of clean, rideable surf after an otherwise grim run.
Before that? Nothing. From Saturday the 11th right through to Sunday the 19th, it’s a dead loss: tiny ankle-snappers, cross-shore chop, and onshore junk. We’re talking days of 0.7ft to 2ft slop with winds all over the shop – north, northeast, even some cross-off breezes on the 15th and 16th that keep things clean but with no swell to work with. The crowd factor at Kijkduin is listed as “sometimes” busy, so when it does fire, you might have a few mates out – but honestly, there’s nothing to draw a crowd for most of this period.
After that Monday morning high point, the surf drops off again quick. Monday afternoon clouds over, the wind swings west and the 4ft becomes onshore and choppy. Tuesday the 21st is messy cross-shore junk, and Wednesday the 22nd brings a 5ft west-northwest swell but it’s blown out by a fresh onshore breeze. The 24th of July (Friday) offers a clean-ish morning with a 4ft northerly swell and cross-off winds, but it’s still ordinary – score’s low, just surfable. Then the 25th and 26th see bigger swells (7ft to 7ft) but with strong cross-shore winds and lumpy, messy conditions – that’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle-surfing. Those bigger waves are only for experts anyway, and with the wind tearing it up, it’s not worth the fight.
So, to wrap it up: the only true highlight is Monday the 20th of July, early. Get out there before the wind turns. After that, the second week is a mix of blown-out lumps and clean but tiny days. Pretty grim overall, mate, but that’s how Kijkduin can go – when it’s quiet, it’s real quiet. Forecasts can change, though.
Rusty.
