The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it's a grim stretch ahead for Kijkduin. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off. There aren't any good surf options on the table, and that's the reality of it. Sometimes the North Sea just goes flat and messy, and this is one of those times. We've got a long gap here with nothing really worth paddling out for.
Looking at Sunday the 23rd of August, it's a no-go right from the start. We've got a weak 3-foot swell from the NNW with a short, choppy 7-second period, and a cross-onshore wind blowing at 12 mph. The wave energy is weak (94), and it's just a mess – poor surf conditions.
The whole of the first week is plagued by onshores and tiny surf. Through Monday and Tuesday (24th and 25th), the swell drops even further to 2 or 2 feet, with almost no energy (down to 16) and periods of only 5-6 seconds. Even when the wind goes clean and offshore, there's simply no wave to ride. Wednesday (26th) is even worse, with swell down to 1 foot. Thursday (27th) morning has offshore wind but the swell is literally zero – not a ripple.
Friday the 28th of August sees a slight bump, with a 4-foot swell from the SW and clean offshore winds, but the period is just 5 seconds and the combined energy is still weak (51). It's just not enough to get excited about. From the 29th of August through the 2nd of September, the wind turns predominantly cross-onshore, picking up strength to 22-28 mph, creating lumpy, messy conditions. The swell height does increase a bit, hitting 6 feet on the 30th with moderate energy (289), but with that fresh cross-onshore wind, it's just a rough, choppy sea. Not surfing weather, that's for sure. The energy on the 31st hits 203 with a clean cross-offshore wind, but again, the period is short and the wind is 22-25 mph, making it a tough paddle for little reward.
As we move into the second week, it's more of the same. Early September brings waist-to-chest high swell (5 feet) on the 2nd and 3rd, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is still short. The wave energy is moderate (between 114 and 192), but the poor wind makes it unrideable. Then it all fades out again. By the 4th of September, the swell drops back to 2 feet, and from the 5th through the 7th, we're scraping the bottom of the barrel with less than a foot and almost zero energy. Nothing to see here.
No standouts, no hidden gems. Honestly, if you're desperate for a fix, you might look at the conditions on the 28th or 31st for a clean window, but with a short-period windswell and strong winds, the beach setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Otherwise, save your energy. When it's this consistently poor, the only thing to do is wait. The forecasts can always change, but this looks like a real blank run for the area.
Rusty, signing off.
