The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a straight-up look at what’s on the table for our stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be honest with you – and I always am – this is a tough one. The wind just doesn’t want to play ball, and the swell is struggling to find any rhythm. It looks like a long stretch of flat, choppy, or wonky conditions, so we’re going to have to be patient.
We are looking at a real dry spell. After the first few days, there is a gap from around the 18th of July right through until the 27th of July with no real surfing to speak of. That is over a week of waiting. You might see a bump here and there, but not worth paddling out for.
Right now, the pattern is dominated by short period windswell from the north. The water temp at Kijkduin is sitting at 69°F, which is a massive 8°F warmer than what’s normal for this time of year. That is very unusual, almost like the ocean is a month ahead of schedule.
Monday afternoon (13 July) is a write-off. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the north, but it’s only 5 seconds of period and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore from the north. The energy is weak at 94, and the surface is going to be lumpy and chopped up. Not your friend.
Tuesday morning (14 July) drops right back to a weak 2ft swell from the north with a period of 6 seconds. The wind is still a moderate 12 mph cross-shore. Energy is down to 32. The afternoon is no better – 3ft with a fresh cross-onshore.
Wednesday morning (15 July) is the only real standout in this whole dumpster fire of a forecast. Swell is only 2ft from the north, but the wind goes light cross-offshore from the ENE at 12 mph. The wave comment says "clean". This is the best we are going to see. It’s small, sure, but clean conditions make a massive difference. The energy is still low at 21, so you’re on a longboard or a funboard, hunting for little runners.
From Wednesday afternoon onward, it’s a slow, sad fade into flatness. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, the swell drops below 2ft, and the period drops down to 4 to 6 seconds. There’s a brief moment on Sunday morning (19 July) where the energy climbs to 167, but it’s a 4ft north-northwest swell with 8 seconds of period and a moderate cross-onshore wind. The wave comment still says "poor surf conditions". It’s messy.
Tuesday morning (21 July) offers glassy conditions with a slight air – 1.0ft from the north and a period of 6 seconds. The energy is next to nothing at 7. Pretty but unrideable.
The final stretch from 27 July onward shows a tiny whisper of west-southwest swell with a 2ft height and 5-second period, but the energy is still low at 23, and the wind is light and onshore or cross. Not enough to get excited about.
So, if you’re desperate, hit it on Wednesday morning (15 July). It’s clean, it’s glassy, and the water is warm. For everything else? Leave the board in the car and maybe take a kite out if you’re into that, because the wind and the windswell combination over the next few days is more suited for that than a paddle. A long gap of flatness ahead, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
