Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Kijkduin is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry patch with hardly a wave worth paddling for. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for anything decent, so we’re starting with a massive gap of no surf.
The first morning with any score that’s even remotely surfable isn’t until Monday, July 20th. And even then, it’s a major struggle. Let’s break it down.
For the first 13 days, from Tuesday morning through to Sunday the 19th, it’s all poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, with short periods around 4 to 7 seconds – that’s weak, wind-affected slop. The combined swell energy is low, ranging from 5 to 80, which is very weak. Winds are almost always onshore or cross-onshore, chopping up whatever crumbly little wave there is. There’s nothing to get excited about, plain and simple. On the 10th and 14th we get a bit of clean, cross-offshore wind, but with swell heights of 1 ft and 3 ft and no power, it’s just a flat, glassy lake.
Finally, on Monday morning, July 20th, we get a tiny glimmer. The wind swings to a light offshore from the SE at 10 km/h. That’s the first clean wind we’ve seen with any sort of swell. The swell is 3 ft from the NNW, but the period is still poor at 7 seconds. The combined energy is 82 – still weak. The forecast says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the best we’ve got. For a beginner, anything over 5 ft is too big, so that’s not an issue here, but the wave quality is just not there. It’s a one-star day in a desert of zeros.
From Monday afternoon onward, it’s right back to poor conditions, with cross-onshore winds and tiny, weak swell. The last entries show nothing but small, choppy junk.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout, no best on offer. If you absolutely have to paddle, Monday morning the 20th is your only, very slim, chance. The water temperature back on the first Tuesday morning was 68°F, which is 7°F warmer than usual – that’s a huge anomaly. So the water’s warm, but the waves are not.
For this stretch, with consistent onshore wind and weak, short-period swell, Kijkduin’s beach break setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Keep your head up, though. It tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change. For now, I’d save the wax.
Rusty.
