The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, checking in on the local surf scene for you.
Alright, I'm gonna level with you. The next couple of weeks here at Kijkduin are a bit of a tough watch. We've got a long stretch of nothing much happening, and it's going to be a grind for anyone looking for a decent wave. The water temp is sitting at 71°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year, so you'll be sweating in your wetsuit, but the waves just aren't cooperating.
We're kicking off on Wednesday the 19th with nothing... and I mean nothing. Tiny, messy, wind-affected junk. That carries on through the rest of the week and into the next. The wind is all over the place, onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is weak and short-period. The combined energy of all swells is just a measly 17, so there's no power in the water.
We finally get a bit of a window on Monday the 24th. The wind goes light offshore and cross-off from the ENE, which is a positive. It cleans up the surface, but the swell is tiny, barely 2 ft from the north. The combined energy is only 26 (weak). It's a clean, empty beach, but you'll be on a longboard or a foamie, and that's okay if you just want to get wet. Crowds are possible, but I doubt many will bother.
The next day, Tuesday the 25th, is similar. Clean offshore winds from the SE and ESE, but the swell is even smaller, down to 1 ft. The combined energy plummets to 10. It's a perfect day for a beginner to practice popping up, but there's no real wave to ride.
After that, it gets weird. We get a pulse of very poor quality, strong cross-onshore wind swell on Friday the 28th. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the NW, with combined energy hitting 293 (moderate). But the wind is howling onshore from the WSW, creating a total mess. It's a chop-fest. This is one of those setups that looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The first week of September shows a bit more size. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, we see a bigger swell, 8 ft to 10 ft from the WNW. The combined energy is massive at 510 to 953 (strong to very strong). But the wind is still cross-onshore, and it's lumpy and choppy. This is big, power-sloppy, and it's for experts only. The period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds, so it's all wind swell, not a clean groundswell.
So, the summary? We've got a long stretch of flat, clean conditions, then a week of messy, big, onshore slop. There's no standout. The best on offer is probably the tiny, clean surf on the 24th and 25th of August, if you just want to float around. Keep your expectations low, and maybe sooner than later, the forecast will change for the better.
Rusty, out.
