Gather 'round. Rusty here. I'm looking at our local stretch, and to be straight with you, the next couple weeks don't look good at all. We're looking at a long stretch of poor surf from now through the end of the month. The first time we even see a wave worth a second look isn't until July 12th, and even that one's a mess. The combined wave energy is barely a whisper most days, and even at its peak on the 12th afternoon, it's only a moderate 125 (units). So, keep your expectations low.
Starting right off on Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th, we've got tiny waves around 2ft to 2ft from the NNW and N, but the wind is cross-onshore. It's choppy, bumpy, and not worth a paddle. Friday the 10th is the same story: 1.0ft to 2ft, light cross-shore winds, and barely any energy. By Saturday the 11th, the swell edges up to 3ft from the north in the afternoon, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making everything lumpy. Wave energy is still weak at 35.
Sunday the 12th is the most notable we get all period. The morning shows some clouds, 3ft north swell at 6 seconds, but the wind is still cross-shore at 16 mph. The combined energy hits 64 (units) in the morning. The afternoon of the 12th is the biggest: 5ft from the north, 6-second period, with the combined energy reaching 125 (units)—the only time we get into that moderate range. But that cross-onshore breeze at 22 mph just wrecks it, making it choppy and lumpy. That's the best we've got, and it's not great for anyone.
After the 12th, it's a slow fade. Monday the 13th drops to 3ft, still cross-onshore. Tuesday the 14th is small again, 2ft to 2ft, same wind nonsense. We don't see a single clean, glassy moment or offshore wind in the entire run. The swell direction stays mostly north or NNW.
The water temperature on the 8th is 68°F—that's about 7°F warmer than usual, which is very unusual. So the water is warm, but the waves are not.
After the 12th, there's nothing. The 16th through the 23rd stays tiny—0.7ft to 3ft—and the wind is always cross, cross-on, or onshore. The combined energy flatlines, often in single digits (2 to 43). The afternoon of the 23rd has 3ft from the WSW, but it's a strong cross-shore wind at 25 mph. That's more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
To wrap it up: a long gap with no real surf, then a messy 5ft day on the 12th is your only real option, and it won't be any kind of classic. After that, it's dead flat for days. The area can turn around quickly, but right now, it's a long, quiet, choppy stretch.
Rusty.
