The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for our local stretch.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough one. We are looking at a long, dry spell of poor conditions right through the end of August and into the first days of September. For the best part of two weeks, it's a write-off. The wind is either cross-on, onshore, or just too strong, and the swell is tiny and weak. The combined energy barely gets into the hundreds, and when it does, it's messy.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean the only standout in this whole 16-day window, is Friday the 4th of September. The afternoon session at Kijkduin is where you want to be. The wind is light and coming from the south, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze. The swell is a solid 7ft from the WSW with a period of 7 seconds, pumping 374 units of combined energy – that's a moderate to strong push. It's a bit of a chunky size, so it's better suited to the more experienced crew, but it has the potential to be the best waves we've seen in a long time. The morning of the 4th is a total write-off, but by the afternoon, it's on.
Before that, on the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September, we get a sniff of something. The swell is 5ft from the SW with clean offshore winds from the SE, and the energy is moderate (129 units). It's surfable, but it's not a standout. The conditions are clean, but the waves are just ordinary.
The water temperature has been a bit of a talking point. When we get that first bit of surf on the 21st of August, the water is at 70°F, which is a massive 5°F above the norm for this time of year. That's very unusual, so you'll be in for a warm one if you're brave enough to paddle out in the junk.
So, to sum it up: don't bother looking at the surf until the very end of the window. The wait is long, but that Friday the 4th of September afternoon could be worth it. It's a long-range call, so keep your fingers crossed.
Rusty.
