The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, ’cause I’ve looked at the charts for Izquierda and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Truth is, for the next couple of weeks, the wind is gonna be a major pain. It’s blowing straight onshore from the north and north-northeast, and that’s gonna turn what could be a fun wave into a choppy, lumpy mess. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The forecast kicks off on Friday, July 17th, with some small swell. We’re talking about 3 ft to 4 ft, but it’s a short-period windswell (5 to 6 seconds) and the combined wave energy is weak (74 to 96). The wind is a moderate to fresh breeze from the NNE, right onshore, so it’s gonna be a battle. The surf report says “poor surf conditions,” and honestly, I wouldn’t bother. This pattern of onshore wind and windswell sticks around for the whole first week.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are more of the same: 4 ft to 4 ft, short period, onshore wind. The energy creeps up a bit (111 to 168), but it’s still not worth paddling out for. By Monday the 20th, the swell starts to lift a little, hitting 5 ft to 5 ft, and the period stretches to 7 seconds. The energy is getting into the moderate range (243 to 260), but with that fresh onshore breeze, it’s just going to be a messy, mushy closeout. This continues right through to Friday the 24th, with swell sitting around 5 ft. It’s consistent, but the quality is poor.
Now, the second week is where it gets a bit more interesting. Around Sunday, July 26th, the swell picks up to 6 ft, and the period jumps to 8 seconds. The energy is getting strong, hitting 608. But, the wind is still onshore, and on Sunday afternoon it actually swings to a cross-on from the NNE, which is going to make it lumpy. Not ideal.
The real standout is on Monday, July 27th. The morning session sees a solid 7 ft swell from the NE with a 9-second period. The combined wave energy is a massive 1126 – that’s some serious power. But here’s the heartbreaker: the wind is still blowing onshore from the NNE at 19 mph. This is a setup that’s gonna be heavy, powerful, and messy. It’s a proper expert-only wave at that size, and with the wind, it’ll be a challenge. For a beginner, 7 ft is too big. For everyone else, that wind is gonna ruin the shape.
The best chance for a decent wave looks like Wednesday, July 29th. The swell is 7 ft from the north, with a 10-second period – that’s a proper groundswell. The energy is strong (896 to 936). The wind is still onshore, but it drops to a moderate breeze (12 to 16 mph). It’s not glassy, but it’s the best wind we’ll see all week. The swell is going to be powerful and long-period, which is great for a reef break like Izquierda, but it might make it a bit too straight for the takeoff. Still, if you’re an experienced surfer, this is the day to gamble. The crowds are reported as “sometimes” here, so you might have a few mates out, but it won’t be a circus.
After that, the swell starts to fade through the end of July and into August 1st, dropping back to 4 ft with the wind still a problem. There’s a gap of several days (from July 30th to August 1st) where the surf quality is poor again.
So, if I had to pick one true standout, it’s the morning of Wednesday, July 29th. The swell is pumping, it’s a long period groundswell, and the wind is the lightest it’s been. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only window in the 16 days where the energy and the wind align enough to make it worth a look. Just be ready for a powerful, fast wave.
