The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, lookin’ at what we’ve got for the next couple weeks. Bit of a tricky stretch, to be honest. We’re starting right off the bat on Wednesday, July 15th, but don’t get your hopes up. The only spot that’s got anything for us is Izquierda. It’s a consistent reef break, exposed to the swell, and the water is sitting at 73°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s about the only good news. The swell is tiny, just 2ft coming from the north with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is weak at 65. The wind’s got a nasty cross-on from the NNE at 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. It’s labeled as poor surf, and honestly, it’s not going to get much better for a while.

Through Thursday and Friday, the swell stays small, under 4ft, and that wind stays right on it or cross-on from the north-northeast, blowing 16 to 19 mph. The period is still short, around 6 to 9 seconds. The energy creeps up a bit – by Friday afternoon it’s at 143 (moderate) – but the wave comment keeps saying poor. It’s just not clean. This pattern locks in for the weekend and into the start of the next week. Every day, the same story: onshore wind from the north, sometimes NNE, blowing moderate to fresh, and the swell hovers between 4ft and 5ft. The energy gets into the low 100s and 200s, but the quality never lifts. It’s all onshore slop.

We finally start to see the swell build around Wednesday, July 22nd. The height pushes to 5ft from the north with an 8-second period, and the energy climbs to 318 (moderate). But that wind is still right on it from the north at 16 mph. It’s bigger, but it’s rough. That size – over 5ft – means it’s getting too much for beginners, and with the wind, it’s a real fight.

The real change kicks in from Saturday, July 25th, heading into the end of the month. Swell heights hit 6ft to 6ft from the north, periods stretch to 8 or 9 seconds, and the energy jumps into the 400s and 500s – that’s strong. By Saturday afternoon, it’s 509. But here’s the catch: the wind doesn’t let up. It’s still onshore from the north or north-northeast, blowing 16 to 22 mph. For a reef break like Izquierda, that’s a tough combo. The waves will have some push, but it’s going to be lumpy, choppy, and hard to surf well. Only experts should be looking at this size with that kind of wind. For the average surfer, this looks more like a session for the kite gear than a paddle board.

Right at the tail end, Wednesday, July 29th and Thursday, July 30th, the swell backs down to 4ft to 5ft, periods drop to 7-8 seconds, and the energy settles to around 200. The wind finally eases a little, switching to a cross-on from the NNE and NE, but it’s still not clean.

Honestly, this whole outlook is a tough one. The only standout, if you can call it that, is that final swell pulse on the weekend of July 25th-27th when the energy is at its peak. The reef at Izquierda will be handling some size, pushing 6ft to 6ft from the north, but you’ll need to be ready for a battle with the wind. It’s for the experienced crew only. Beginners should sit this whole period out. There’s a gap of nothing but poor conditions from day one all the way through. This stretch is a real test of patience.
