The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve got the goods on Izquierda, and I’ll be honest with you – this is a tough stretch. The forecast is a long, flat, and windy run for the most part, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel if you’re patient.
The overall pattern is a solid two-week block of onshore winds and messy, weak swell. The wind is locked in from the north-northeast, blowing straight onto the break, which is exactly what you don’t want at an exposed reef. The water temp is sitting at 73.2°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the wait won’t be a cold one.
We’ve got a long gap of rough conditions. From Friday 17 July right through to Saturday 25 July, the swell is small and weak, with combined energy values sitting between 130 and 427 – that’s weak to moderate energy at best. The swell periods are short, between 6 and 8 seconds, meaning it’s just wind slop, not groundswell. And with winds blowing 15 to 22 mph onshore, it’s gonna be a choppy, blown-out mess. Not worth paddling out for.
The run continues to be poor through the week of the 23rd, but the swell starts to build. By Sunday 26 July, we see a real jump in energy – the combined energy hits 910, which is strong, and the swell height is pushing 7.9 ft. That’s a serious amount of water, but the period is only 9 seconds, so it’s still a bit short and lumpy. The wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, so the quality is going to be rough. This is expert territory only – 7.9 ft with onshore wind is a battle, not a session.
The standout, and I mean the only true standout in this whole 16-day window, is looking like Monday 27 July. The swell drops slightly to 7.5 ft, still from the NNE, with a 9-second period, but the combined energy is still high at 816. The wind is cross-onshore in the morning, which is lumpy, but by the afternoon it swings to straight onshore. Keep your eye on the early morning session if you’re a seasoned charger. This is the only time the size and energy are worth the drive, but it’s still not clean. For the rest of the period right through to Saturday 1 August, the swell hangs around 5.2 ft to 5.9 ft, but the wind stays onshore, and the energy is moderate. It’s just not good.
To be blunt, the entire 16 days is a write-off for clean surf. The break is consistent, but the wind and swell direction are working against us. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup might look interesting with the strong onshore wind and solid swell, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go. Keep an eye on the forecast, because it tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, I’d give this one a miss.
