The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Izquierda over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you—this stretch is a big fat zero when it comes to decent surf. The whole 16-day window from Thursday 16 July through to Friday 31 July is marked as poor surf conditions across the board. Every single session gets a big thumbs down. The swell’s there, but the wind is relentless onshore—blowing from the north or north-northeast with moderate to fresh speeds, never giving the waves a chance to clean up. That’s a real gut punch because Izquierda is a consistent reef that can handle a decent NW swell when the stars align. Right now, the swell is coming mostly from the north, not the optimum north-west, and the period is short—6 to 9 seconds—so it’s not packing that long-period groundswell punch you’d want at a reef.
The combined swell energy (between 66 and 751) varies from weak to strong, but with that onshore wind it doesn’t matter—the surface is choppy and messy. Nothing’s rideable in any quality sense. There’s no morning glass-off, no offshore windows, just a constant cross-on or onshore breeze. Water’s a touch warmer than average at 74°F, which is nice, but that’s about the only positive.
So what’s the call? If you’re paddling, save your energy. The 16-day forecast shows a total blank run. That’s unusual for a spot that usually has something, but when the wind locks in from the north like this, it can happen. A few days with swell over 7 ft towards the end of the first week and into the second week might get some size, but with those onshore winds it’ll be lumpy and gnarly—probably more interesting for the kite crew than us surfers. Keep an eye on the long-range, but right now I’d say take a break.
Rusty.
