The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, we’ve got a bit of a rough patch to get through. The forecast is showing swell building over the coming days, but the wind is just not playing ball at all. It’s a classic case of plenty of ocean energy, but the conditions are going to be a mess for the foreseeable future. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the early part is a write-off if you’re after a clean wave.
The first read on the swell is Thursday, July 16th, with a tiny 2 ft from the WNW, but it’s straight into a 18 mph onshore wind. That’s the story for the next week and a half. The wind is relentless from the North and NNE, hammering the coast. The swell builds, sure. By July 20th, we’re seeing 5 ft, and then it keeps climbing, hitting 6 ft and even 6 ft by the end of July. The energy ramps up from moderate (104) to strong (772), but it’s all blown out. The period is short, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, which is just windslop anyway. For a reef break, you need clean conditions, and we’re not getting any.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Izquierda. It’s a consistent reef break, exposed to the swell, and it’s always going to catch that energy. Optimum swell is from the NW, and we’re mostly getting N and NNE, so it’s not even hitting the right angle. The water temp is sitting at 74°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s unusual.
The best on offer is a case of pure potential. The window from July 26th onwards sees the swell staying solid, around 6 ft to 6 ft, with the period finally stretching to 9 seconds. The energy is really strong, hitting some three-digit values. But that wind! It’s still onshore, 15-18 mph out of the N. If we get a break in that wind, expect a shift. Until then, this is a waiting game. For the absolute standout, if you’re willing to gamble on a last-minute change, keep an eye on July 29th. The morning is cloudy with 6 ft from the N, 9-second period, and a moderate breeze. The combined energy is 579 (strong). That’s the biggest, most powerful swell of the window, but the wind is still onshore. It’s a promising setup, but the forecast is less certain that far out. If the wind gods smile on us, that Wednesday morning could be worth a look.
Right now, for the first 10 days, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing. The consistent onshore wind and building swell will be a dream for them, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go. The conditions are "poor" across the board. Don’t get your hopes up for the first week. The second week shows a slight improvement in period, but the wind stays stubborn. It’s a long blank run of messy surf.
Rusty.
