The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Alright, straight up – this is a tough stretch for the next 16 days at Izquierda. The swell is there, no doubt, but the wind is just relentless. We’re looking at fresh onshore breezes from the NNE and N for the majority of the period, and that’s going to keep things messy. The water temp is sitting at 73°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a small comfort.
We kick off Friday, July 17th, with a 3ft swell from the NNE, but that onshore wind is blowing 19 mph, and the combined energy is weak at 122. It’s a cross-on mess, and the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. This pattern locks in through Saturday and Sunday, July 18th and 19th, with swell bumping up a bit to 4ft, but the wind stays on, and the energy is still moderate at best (155 to 173). The period is short, only 6 to 7 seconds, so no real shape to speak of.
Monday July 20th through to Thursday July 23rd, the swell pushes up to 5ft, but the wind is still onshore at 19-22 mph. The combined energy climbs into the 260s and 300s, so there’s moderate power, but it’s all ruined by the wind. The period stays short, around 7-8 seconds, so it’s lumpy and bumpy.
Friday July 24th brings a slight easing of the wind to 16 mph in the morning, but it’s still onshore, and the swell is 5ft. The energy drops to 230, still moderate. Saturday and Sunday, July 25th and 26th, the swell builds to 6ft and then 6ft, with energy climbing to 377 and 452. The period starts to stretch to 8 seconds, but the wind is relentless. By Monday July 27th, we’re at 6ft swell with a 9-second period, and energy is getting strong at 547. Still, it’s onshore, so it’s a messy, choppy affair.
The real energy kicks in from Wednesday July 29th onwards. The swell hits 7ft to 7ft, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy surges to 940, 1229, and even 1441. That’s strong to very strong wave energy. But the wind is still onshore or cross-on at 19-22 mph. These are big, powerful, but wind-chopped waves. For a reef break, that’s a shame. The swell direction is N and NNE, which is not the optimum NW direction for this spot.
The standout in this entire window is August 1st, Saturday. The swell peaks at 8ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is massive: 1408 and 1503. This is a very strong, long-period groundswell. For a reef break like Izquierda, that could produce some long, deep lines. The wind is still onshore, unfortunately, so it won’t be glassy, but the sheer power will be there. However, at 8ft, this is only for experienced surfers. The crowd situation is “sometimes,” so you might have company, but it’s not a total zoo.
The bottom line: there’s no day in this 16-day window that’s truly clean. The wind is the killer. The swell is there, and it gets big, but it’s not worth paddling out until the wind shifts. The only real standout is August 1st, but it’s a long way off, and with that onshore wind, it’s more of a promise than a sure thing. Keep an eye on the forecasts – things can change.
Rusty.
