The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee, this is a tough one to write. I'm looking at the charts for Hamilton Beach State Park, and folks, it is flat. Dead flat. There is literally no surf energy registered for the entire 16-day window. We're talking a combined swell energy of 0 right through to the end of September. It's a full blank run.

Hamilton Beach State Park is a reef and point setup that ideally wants some north-west swell to get going, but there's just nothing on the horizon. The water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is about 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's notably warm, but it won't help the waves.

For the next couple of weeks, the only action you'll find is the wind. We get a mix of conditions – some clean offshore mornings, a few glassy afternoons like that one on Monday the 14th, and even some cross-off breezes. But it's all on a completely flat ocean. It's heartbreaking, really. There are no waves, so there's nothing to recommend.

The whole run from now through to Saturday the 26th of September is a write-off for surfing. It's the kind of stretch that tests your patience.

If you're desperate for some time on the water, with that kind of consistent wind and a flat surf, this setup honestly looks way more interesting for a kite session than trying to paddle a surfboard. The wind across that exposed reef and point will be a better friend to a kite than to a surfer right now.

But for now, the board stays in the shed. It doesn't tend to stay this dead forever, so keep an eye on those forecasts. I'll be back when there's something to talk about.

Rusty.
