The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a pretty solid run of waves coming up at Escolleras. The water is sitting at 89° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a good 4° above the long-term average, so don’t be surprised if it feels like a bath.
The week kicks off on Tuesday morning, July 14th, with some clean 3 feet swell from the SSW, with a long period of 13 seconds. The wind is light and offshore out of the north at 6 mph, and the combined energy is moderate at 581. It’s a bit on the smaller side, but it’s a great call for beginners. The afternoon goes onshore and messy, so get it in the morning.
Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th offer glassy mornings with small swell (2 to 3 feet) and periods around 12 to 16 seconds. The energy is moderate (440 and 358). Mornings are the only time to go, as afternoons get a cross-onshore breeze.
Friday the 17th morning is a standout. We’ve got 3 feet of SSW swell with a 13-second period, glassy conditions, and a moderate energy of 508. It’s a risk of a thunderstorm, but the surf will be very clean. The water is still that warm anomaly.
The real highlight of the first week hits on Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell bumps up to 3 feet from the SW with a long 17-second period, glassy offshores from the NNE at 3 mph, and strong energy of 948. This is a very clean, quality session for the intermediate crowd.
Monday the 20th morning is the best of the first run. The swell is 4 feet from the SW with a 16-second period, glassy, and the energy jumps to a strong 1103. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The size is getting into the intermediate zone, but the wind is perfect.
The run continues through the week with clean mornings. Wednesday the 22nd morning has 4 feet from the WSW with a 12-second period and glassy conditions. Thursday the 23rd morning has 5 feet from the W with a 12-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong at 801.
There is a rough patch on Saturday the 25th morning with a strong SE wind hitting 19 mph, creating lumpy cross-chop and poor conditions. Don’t bother. But that afternoon, the wind drops to glassy and the 3 feet SW swell with a very long 18-second period cleans right up. Energy is strong at 988.
The second week ramps up hard. Sunday the 26th morning is a top contender. The swell is 4 feet from the SW with a 19-second period, glassy, and the energy is very strong at 1276. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The long period will make the waves racy and powerful – best for the point or reef, as it might close out a beach.
Monday the 27th morning and Tuesday the 28th morning both offer glassy conditions with 4 feet to 5 feet of SW swell and strong energy (999 and 1148). Both are excellent calls.
The real standout is the last week. On Wednesday the 29th, the swell is absolutely pumping. The morning has 15 feet from the SSE with a 13-second period, a clean cross-offshore breeze, and the energy is a massive 9072. The afternoon has 16 feet with 12711 energy. This is expert territory only. The swell is too big for this break, so unless you’re a charger on a big-wave gun, sit this one out. It’s also worth noting that big S swells at an exposed break like this could be a kite surfer’s dream if the wind cooperates.
So, for the best all-rounder, hit Sunday morning July 19th for the clean, moderate swell. For the experienced crew, Monday morning July 20th and Sunday morning July 26th are absolute crackers. If you’re a big-wave expert, that Wednesday the 29th is a beast, but be warned.
Crowds are often at Escolleras, so expect plenty of company, especially on the clean mornings.
Rusty.
