The Lowdown
Alright, surfer, let’s talk about what’s cooking here. We’re locking in on Escolleras, a beginner-friendly spot that’s exposed to the swell and fairly consistent. The water temperature is sitting at 89°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be feeling that bathwater vibe.
The first real action is on Thursday morning, the 20th of August. We’ve got a small but clean 3ft SSW swell, with a period around 13 seconds, and a light offshore wind from the NNE. The combined energy is weak (343), so don’t expect any big power, but it’s clean and fun for the longboards or mid-lengths. Afternoon gets messy with a cross-on wind, so call it a half-day.
Friday morning, the 21st, is another clean slot with that same 3ft SSW swell, a cross-off wind from the NNW, and light airs. The energy is still low (352), but it’s surfable. Afternoon turns marginal.
Saturday the 22nd is a mixed bag. Morning has a risk of thunderstorms but a clean offshore wind from the NE with 2ft SW swell. The energy is moderate (449), so it’s a bit punchier. The afternoon is marginal with a cross-on wind.
Now, Sunday the 23rd is where it gets interesting. The morning has 2ft SW swell, but the period jumps to 18 seconds – that’s real groundswell energy. The combined energy is moderate (785) and the wind is cross-off from the NNW. That long period will make the waves more powerful and lined up, but at a beach break, it might break a bit too straight. Still, it’s clean and promising.
Monday the 24th is a standout morning. Glassy conditions with 2ft SW swell, 17-second period, and moderate energy (566). That’s a beautiful window for a quiet session. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong onshore wind.
We’ve got a bit of a gap in quality from the 25th to the 26th, with mostly marginal or poor conditions, but the 27th of August morning is worth a mention – glassy, 2ft SW swell, 18-second period, and energy jumping to 631. That’s a long-period groundswell set to be clean and glassy.
But the real highlight of the whole outlook is Friday the 28th of August morning. We’re looking at 4ft SW swell, 17-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 1138. The wind is glassy from the ENE. That’s excellent surf for experienced surfers. The swell is a bit over 5ft, so it’s pushing into intermediate territory, but the glassy conditions and solid groundswell make it a top pick.
The 29th of August Saturday morning is also excellent – 6ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and energy at 1701. That’s big, powerful energy, and with glassy WNW wind, it’s a clean, heavy wave for experienced surfers only. This one is not for beginners.
The first week of September continues to deliver. The 2nd of September Wednesday morning has 3ft SW swell, 16-second period, and glassy conditions – clean and fun. The 3rd of September Thursday morning is excellent again, with 4ft SW swell, 18-second period, and strong energy (1204) with a cross-off wind.
The 4th of September Friday morning closes the outlook with a bang – 4ft SSW swell, 16-second period, glassy winds, and strong energy (1049). That’s another excellent window for experienced surfers.
Overall, the best sessions are the mornings of the 28th, 29th of August, and the 3rd of September. The 28th has the best combo of size, period, and glassy wind. The 29th is bigger and more powerful. The 3rd is a solid, clean groundswell. Crowds are going to be an issue here – this spot is often packed, so get there early.
Keep an eye on the long-range standouts, but remember, those are a bit less certain. Right now, the water is warm, the swell is on, and there are plenty of clean windows.
