The Lowdown
Right, let's have a look at what's cookin' for Escolleras over the next couple of weeks.
The coming period has a real pulse of solid, long-period SW groundswell on the horizon, but it's framed by more moderate, mixed conditions. Most of the action here is for the dawn patrol crew, with morning glass setting the stage.
We've got a bit of a build-up starting on Friday the 17th. The morning is looking pretty tasty – a clean 3ft SSW groundswell with a solid 13-second period, and glassy conditions from an ENE breeze. The water is a touch warmer than usual at 88°. It won't be huge fun, but it's a nice way to ease into the weekend. The afternoon gets scrappy with a cross-shore wind shift, though.
Saturday the 18th morning is cleaner, with glassy conditions again, but the swell drops to a pretty weak 2ft. The period is long at 19 seconds, which means it'll be walled up at the beach but will have those nice lines. It's too small for much excitement though. The afternoon wind is a write-off.
Now, Sunday the 19th morning is where it starts to get real. We’re looking at a punchy 4ft SW swell, a very long 17-second period, and clean cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is strong at 1059. That's proper surf, but with that length of period, it's going to be better on the point than trying to find a peak in the beach. Still, it's a standout morning for the experienced surfer.
Monday the 20th is similar, with a bigger 4ft swell and a 16-second period, glassy again in the morning. The energy is even stronger at 1056. It's the best of the early days, no question. Another morning for the experienced crew.
We then hit a stretch of average conditions. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd are both messy with cross-shore breezes and the swell dropping back. The energy dips into the 400-600 range. Not much to get excited about, just a bit of chop.
Thursday the 23rd morning is glassy and clean at 3ft, but the swell direction is WSW and the period is a weaker 12 seconds. It's a fun option for a beginner on the log but it's not a standout.
Then things go quiet until Friday the 24th morning. A small 2ft SW groundswell but the period is a massive 24 seconds! Combined energy is 828. It will be very clean with glassy conditions. It's a very special, long-period groundswell but the size makes it a longboarder's dream rather than a barrel session.
The real main event starts Saturday the 25th morning. A clean, glassy 4ft SW groundswell with a 21-second period and massive combined energy of 1220. This is the start of a sustained pulse. This morning is excellent for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 26th is a step up in size at 5ft, but the wind is cross-shore, so while the swell is meaty, the conditions are choppy. The energy is up at 1812, but the quality is down.
Monday the 27th morning is the absolute pinnacle. A solid 6ft SW groundswell, 19-second period, glassy from a NNE breeze. The combined energy is a whopping 2475. This is a serious, powerful swell. It's expert territory for sure, but for those who can handle it, it's the best day on offer. The afternoon gets blown out though.
Tuesday the 28th morning is another standout with a 7ft SSW groundswell and a 17-second period. It's completely glassy with zero wind. This is big, powerful, and clean – a proper session for the big-wave crew. The combined energy is 2376.
After that, the swell begins to drop. Wednesday the 29th is still sizeable at 5ft but the wind is cross-shore. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st are still pumping with solid 4-3ft groundswell, clean in the morning, though the afternoons get messy. By Saturday the 1st of August, we’re back down to smaller, clean surf.
If you can only pick one window, it's the Sunday 27th and Tuesday 28th mornings. That's as good as it gets.
