The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
We’ve got a solid run of surf lining up at Escolleras, starting from Sunday morning the 23rd of August and rolling through the entire 16-day window. There are no gaps without a recommendation; it’s a long, consistent stretch of waves.
The opening Sunday morning is a sneakily good one. The water is sitting at 89°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in just boardies. We’ve got a clean 2ft SW swell rolling in with a very long period of 18 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a moderate 767. With a glassy, offshore NNE breeze at 3 mph, it’s going to be smooth and lined up. The crowd factor is “often” here, so expect some company, but the conditions will make it worth it.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th get a bit messy. The wind swings around and picks up, bringing cross-shore chop and smaller energy levels. The days are marginal, so I’d be picking my sessions carefully.
The real standout starts to build on Friday the 28th of August. Friday morning delivers glassy conditions with a 4ft SW swell from a 17-second period. The combined energy jumps to 979. That’s the start of something. Then Saturday the 29th of August morning is where it really cranks. It’s glassy again, with a 6ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and a combined energy of 1609. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The swell is getting punchy, and the offshore glass is perfect.
Sunday the 30th of August morning keeps the quality high at 5ft, clean, and a combined energy of 1429. Then Monday the 31st of August morning, we see a bigger jump: 7ft SSW swell, still clean, with a combined energy of 1561. That’s getting into expert territory – if you’re a beginner, this one is too big for you.
The best of the best, though, is Thursday the 3rd of September morning. We’re looking at 5ft of SSW swell, with a very long 18-second period, and a combined energy of 1932. That’s strong wave energy. The wind is a glassy-offshore light breeze. It’s going to be clean, powerful, and lined up perfectly for the point. If you can only paddle out one day, that’s your window.
The final week keeps the quality high. Friday the 4th of September morning has a 7ft SSW swell, 17-second period, and a combined energy of 2996 – that’s very strong energy. Offshore wind keeps it clean. The 5th and 6th of September hold similar, excellent conditions, with glassy mornings and good energy. By Monday the 7th of September, the swell shifts to the W, but it’s still a solid 6ft and clean in the morning.
Bottom line: this is a long, sustained run of swell. The standout morning is Thursday the 3rd of September – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. Glassy, strong, long-period groundswell. It’s going to be special.
Rusty.
