The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this out there. The water’s sittin’ at 89 degrees, which is a touch warmer than it should be for this time of year. It’s not crazy, but you’ll feel it.
We’ve got a run of surf on the way. It kicks off Tuesday morning at Punta Descanso with a clean 2ft of SSW swell. It’s small, but the air’s glassy with a light ENE cross-off breeze, so it’ll be clean. The energy is weak though. The afternoon gets messy with onshore wind, so get it while you can.
Wednesday morning is looking sweet. The swell drops slightly to 2ft from the SW, but the winds go glassy. Clean little waves. The period is a bit longer at 15 seconds, which is nice. Energy is still weak.
Thursday morning is the same story. Small, clean, with a 2ft SW swell and glassy conditions. The period drops a touch to 13 seconds. Energy is pickin' up a bit. Afternoons are all onshore slop, so don't bother.
Friday morning is where things start to get interesting. The swell bumps up to a full 3ft from the SSW, with a solid 18-second period. That’s some proper groundswell energy. The wind is a light offshore from the NNE, so it’s going to be clean. The energy reading is a big jump. This is the first real standout of the period. The afternoon will be a write-off with cross-on wind, so make the morning session count.
Saturday morning holds in the 4ft range from the SSW, with a 16-second period. The wind is a cross-off from the NW, so it should still be clean. Energy is strong. Another good morning. The pattern holds through Sunday and Monday mornings, with 4ft and 3ft SSW swells, clean conditions, and strong energy. Monday afternoon has a long 20-second period, but it’s breaking onshore, so it’s not worth the effort.
Tuesday through Thursday mornings of next week keep the clean, cross-off conditions going with 3ft SW swells. Nothing huge, but consistent and clean. The energy stays in the moderate range.
Now, for the real standout. Friday, August 14th, the swell jumps to 5ft from the SW with an 18-second period. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, and the energy reading is a hefty one. This is the best lookin' day of the whole run. It’s clean, it’s got punch, and it’s got push. This is the one to circle. The morning will be excellent.
Saturday, August 15th, is nearly as good. The swell is 5ft from the SW with a 16-second period, and the winds are dead glassy in the morning. The energy is still strong. This is another excellent morning. However, at 5ft, it’s pushing past the beginner zone. This is for the experienced crew.
After that, the surf settles back down to the 3-4ft range for the rest of the window, with the usual glassy mornings and onshore afternoons. The final Wednesday morning on the 19th looks like a gem, with 3ft SSW swell and completely calm winds. Clean as a whistle.
So, the pick of the litter is definitely Friday the 14th. The swell, the period, the wind, it all lines up. Saturday the 15th is a close second. The rest of the mornings have fun, clean waves, but nothing to get too worked up about. Just get on it early.
Rusty.
