The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here, and I've been grinding through the forecast for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be honest with you, it's mostly a bust. We're stuck in a flat spell, and it's going to take a while to break. But there is one bright spot if you're willing to wait.
Right now and for the foreseeable future, La Ocho (Escambron Beach) is pretty much dead. We're starting with tiny, weak waves—swell heights barely scraping 1 ft with a short period of 8 seconds from the east. The combined wave energy is a weak 38, so there's just no power whatsoever. The water temp is a warm 84°, which is normal for this time of year, so it's fine for a dip, but not for surfing. With the cross-offshore winds from the east at 15 mph, it's just a flat, blown-out mess.
This flatness is going to drag on for days. Most of the time we see "poor surf conditions" from Wednesday, August 19th, all the way through. You'll notice a little bump on Friday, August 28th. Friday morning shows a 5 ft swell from the east-northeast, with moderate energy (348) and cross-shore winds. It's rated as marginal. But the Friday afternoon might be the surprise of the run—a 4 ft east swell with a light 9 mph cross-offshore wind from the southeast, making for some clean waves. The energy is moderate (274), and it actually looks like it might be rideable.
But the real gem, the only one that's a true standout, is the morning of Sunday, August 30th. This is the best the whole 16 days has to offer. We're looking at a 5 ft swell from the east-northeast with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is pumping strong at 563! It's too big for beginners, but for the rest of you, this could be a ripper session. The wind is a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the east at 15 mph, which will keep the wave faces glassy at this exposed reef. Watch out for the crowds, though—La Ocho can get packed, so stake your claim early. It's clean and it's got some punch.
After that Sunday high, it fades fast. Monday the 31st drops to a 4 ft swell, and by the time September rolls around, we're right back into the flat, weak junk. That last week is a total washout.
So here's the plan: there's a huge gap of nothing, then a chance on the afternoon of Friday, August 28th, and our one and only highlight on the morning of Sunday, August 30th. Chase that swell, because after it's gone, we're back to waiting.
Rusty.
