The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Well, I’ll be honest with you, this is about as flat a run as I’ve seen for El Playon over the next 16 days. The whole forecast window from Monday the 17th of August right through to Tuesday the 1st of September is a write-off. There’s basically nothing on offer.
I’ve had a good look at the numbers and every single session shows zero wave energy and “poor surf conditions.” The water temperature is sitting at 82°F which is about normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s average. You’ve got a mix of cross-onshore and onshore winds most days, with a few glassy patches on Wednesday 19th morning, Wednesday 26th morning, and Monday 31st morning, but even then there’s no swell behind it. The swell height is either missing entirely or a tiny 0.3 ft from the north with a period of 10 seconds. That’s not even enough to get your ankles wet.
El Playon is a beginner-friendly beach and breakwater set-up that’s sheltered and consistent, but when the swell is this absent, even a consistent spot can’t do a thing. There’s no standout sessions, no hidden gems, nothing. It’s just a quiet couple of weeks for this stretch of coast. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might get a few ripples on the glassy mornings, but honestly – leave the board at home. This stretch looks more like a lake than a surf break.
Sometimes these blank runs happen here. The forecasts change, so it’s not always poor for long, but for now, it’s dead.
Rusty.
