El Playon Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.

Well, amigos, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing worth getting wet for. From now, right through until the morning of the 19th of September, it’s a flat, frustrating run. Day after day of “poor surf conditions” with zero energy. It’s the kind of spell that’ll have you checking the forecast twice and hoping for a change. The only glimmer in that first week is a couple of glassy mornings on the 14th and 18th, but with no swell to speak of, it’s just a flat, pretty lake. Not a ripple to ride.

Then, finally, on the morning of Saturday the 19th of September, we get a whisper of life. The swell shows up at a tiny 0.3 ft, coming from the north with a 12-second period. The combined energy is a weak 3, so it’s barely a bump. The morning is glassy, with zero wind, so it’ll be clean as a pin, but you’ll be fighting for a dribble. That afternoon, the wind swings east and picks up to about 6 mph, making it a light cross-onshore, so it’ll get a little bumpy. The same tiny, weak pulse hangs around for the Sunday morning (20th) with the same glassy conditions, but again, it’s marginal.

The only other chance we see is right at the end of the outlook, on the afternoon of Tuesday the 22nd of September. We get a bit more size – 2 ft from the northeast, with a very short period of just 5 seconds. The combined energy is still low at 18. The wind goes glassy, so it’ll be clean, but that short period means lumpy, weak, close-out mush. It’s not going to be pretty.

The only break on the cards is El Playon. It’s a sheltered beach and breakwater setup, which explains why it’s not picking up any real energy. The optimal swell direction is from the north-northeast, so when that tiny pulse arrives on the 19th and 22nd, it’s at least coming from the right angle. But with no real swell and light winds, the water temp is about average for the time of year.

Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there’s nothing that’s a standout. The small swell on the 19th and 22nd is the best on offer, but it’s so weak it’s only for the most desperate. If you’re a beginner, the 0.3 ft on the 19th is safe, but the 2 ft on the 22nd is still well under 5 ft, so it’s fine for anyone. But for the shredders, this is a total write-off. The whole setup looks more interesting for a flat-water paddle than a surf.
