The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here, checking in on El Playon.
I’ve got to level with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a total bust. From today, Sunday, July 19th, right through to Monday, August 3rd, there’s absolutely no wave energy coming in. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a flat zero (0) for the entire period. That’s one long stretch of nothing.
El Playon is a sheltered beach and breakwater spot, and it’s just not picking up any swell. The wind does give us a few nice windows – there are some glassy mornings, like Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, and Thursday the 23rd of July, with a slight air and clean conditions. But without any swell, it’s just a flat, calm pond. The water is 81°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least it’s warm enough for a float.
There’s one moment that gets a little interesting: the morning of Monday, July 27th. We’ve got a light offshore breeze from the SW at 3 mph, and the conditions are clean. Then that afternoon, it goes dead calm, glassy. Still, there’s zero swell. It’s a cruel tease.
Honestly, if you’re looking to paddle, you’re out of luck. This kind of blank run is normal for the area when the swell windows close up. The forecasts can change, but for now, the only thing breaking is the heat with those thunderstorms threatening most afternoons. If you’ve got a kite, the afternoon cross-onshore breeze might give you something to do, but for a surfboard, it’s a no-go.
Hang in there. The ocean always comes back.
Rusty.
