    The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The next sixteen days look bleak. We’re looking at a long, flat spell right from the start. For over a week, there’s just nothing to work with. It’s not until around September 10th that we see the tiniest ripple of hope, and even then, it’s barely worth pulling the wetsuit on for.

From August 28th all the way through to the morning of September 9th, it’s a total zero. Combined wave energy is flat at 0 the whole time. No swell to speak of. Winds are mostly cross-onshore or just plain breezy. There are a couple of glassy mornings on August 31st and September 6th, but with zero waves, it doesn't matter.

The only spot in the mix is El Playon. It’s a sheltered beach and breakwater setup, a beginner-friendly wave that likes a swell from the NNE. Come Thursday, September 10th, we finally get a pulse. We’re talking a tiny 0.2m swell from the NNE, with a 11-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, which at a beach break can be a bit straight and gutless. The combined energy is a weak 13. Water temp is about 28.5°, which is standard for this time of year.

But here’s the one bright spot: the wind on Thursday morning. It’s a light breeze from the north, giving us a glassy surface. For a wave this small and weak, clean conditions are the only thing that makes it rideable. It’s the standout, but it’s a very small one. This is not a day for a proper session, just for a few tiny, clean ankle-snappers if you’re really jonesing. It’ll get a bit choppy again by the afternoon. Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th look like they drop back to flatness.

For the rest of the 16-day window, with the persistent cross-shore winds and no surf, El Playon might be more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfers.

So, the one and only call is the morning of Thursday, September 10th at El Playon. Tiny waves, perfect conditions, but don’t get your hopes up.
