The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – looking at the 16-day window for El Playon, and it's a bit of a tough one. This spot is a sheltered beach and breakwater setup that really needs a swell from the NNE to work its magic, but it's just not getting anything meaningful. The combined wave energy is sitting at zero (0) for the entire run, and the swell height is either missing or a tiny 0.3 ft right at the end. That's about as flat as it gets.

The whole first week is a write-off. From August 14th right through to the 21st, the surf forecast is consistently "poor surf conditions". It's a long stretch of nothing.

We finally see a blip on the radar around Monday the 18th of August, but it’s not worth getting excited about. There's a 0.3 ft swell showing up from the north with a period of 10 seconds, but it's paired with a cross-onshore wind. That's not surf, that's just a ripple.

Honestly, the most promising conditions here aren't for the waves, which are absent, but for the wind and the glassy mornings. We've got a few moments, like the morning of Monday the 17th and the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August, and again on Monday the 24th of August, where the wind drops to glassy. The problem is, there's no swell to go with it.

Given the consistent lack of swell and the winds that are mostly cross-onshore or onshore, this setup would actually be a lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most of these days. For us surfers waiting for a wave, it’s a long blank run. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, there just isn't a single standout option in the entire 16-day period.

Stay patient,
Rusty
