    The Lowdown

Alright, let’s be straight with you. The next two weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. I’ve scanned the charts for El Playon, and honestly, there’s not a single decent wave on the menu from now until the 18th of August. It’s a complete flat spell, a blank run that can happen in this area. Don’t get your hopes up just yet though – forecasts can change, and it rarely stays this poor for long. But as it stands, you’d be better off finding something else to do.

The issue is there’s just no swell energy at all. The combined energy of all swells directed here is sitting at 0. There’s nothing pushing in, no groundswell, no windswell, nothing. And to make matters worse, the wind is all over the place – mostly cross-onshore from the ENE at 9 to 12 mph, kicking up chop and making things messy even if there was something to ride. The mornings do look cleaner with lighter breezes from the north, but with no waves, clean and flat is all you’ll get.

For the next few days, it’s more of the same. The afternoons are showing a risk of thunderstorms and that cross-on breeze, so it will be choppy and unpleasant. You might see a few tiny bumps on the surface, but that’s just wind ripples, not waves. There’s a sheltered breakwater here, so it might be a spot for a swim or a paddle, but for a surf? Forget it.

This flatness stretches all the way through the first week and into the second. The mornings on the 11th and 17th have a light cross-on from the NNW, but it still points to no surf. I know it’s a bummer, but the ocean is just taking a break. With the water temp at 83°, it’s about average for the time of year, so if you really need to get wet, it’ll be warm, but you’ll be bobbing around, not riding.

So, to sum it up: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. It’s a total drought. Unless you’re keen to test your kite skills in the afternoon cross-shore winds, I’d dust off the longboard for a skate and wait for the next pulse. Keep an eye on the charts, because it won’t be flat forever.
