The Lowdown

Right, I’ve had a good look at the charts for the El Playon area, and I’ve got to be straight with you—it’s a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window and for the vast majority of it, there’s just nothing doing. The swell is virtually non-existent for the first nine days, and we’re dealing with a lot of cross-onshore breezes that’ll keep the surface messy. The water here is a warm 84°F which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.

The first real sign of life, and I mean the *only* sign, shows up on the morning of Monday, September 15th. We get a tiny pulse of north swell, a pathetic 0.3 ft, with a period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is a measly (3), so it’s barely a ripple. That morning the wind is a light cross-offshore from the west, which would keep it clean, but honestly, it’s just not enough to get excited about. The following days see tiny 0.3 ft waves from the north with periods dropping, and the combined energy is basically zero. There’s a window on the 16th with glassy conditions, but again, there’s nothing to ride.

So, the honest truth is, there’s no standout. There’s nothing on offer that’s worth paddling out for. The entire 16-day forecast is a flat spell for El Playon. This is one of those times where you’re better off leaving the boards in the car and having a look at other options. The setup is so quiet and clean with the light winds, it actually looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard, but that’s about it.

Rusty.
