The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for La Punta de Las Caracas over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ll be honest with you: it’s a pretty grim run for a while. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions and cross-shore winds that just won’t let up, so don’t get your hopes up for the first week or so. The first real chance of anything half-decent doesn’t show up until Monday morning, 24th August. That morning, the wind goes glassy – dead calm – and we’ve got a small 3ft swell from the NE, but it’s short-period stuff at 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak (63), so it’s really just ankle to knee-high slop. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon cleans up with a light cross-off breeze and a touch more size at 4ft, energy ticking up to moderate (103), but it’s still nothing to write home about.
After that, it’s back into the doldrums. From Tuesday the 25th right through to the end of August, it’s a solid block of cross-shore winds and poor surf. The swell sits around 3ft to 5ft, but the period stays short (6-7 seconds), and the wind is always cross or cross-onshore, chopping it up. The energy climbs a bit – hitting 234 on the 30th – but with that wind, it’s just a messy, blown-out lump. Not worth paddling out for.
The one standout, if you can call it that, is a small window on Saturday the 5th of September. We’ve got a clean, cross-off breeze from the ESE, light winds, and a 4ft NE swell. The energy is moderate (140-154), and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Given the long drought of poor surf, this is the best on offer. This is a point break, so it likes a NE swell, and the direction is a match. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might get a few others with the same idea, but it won’t be a zoo. Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th also have clean, light winds, with similar 4ft to 3ft swell, but the energy drops off. They’re options, but the 5th is the pick.
Honestly, for the first week, your best bet is to keep the board in the car and check the forecast again. It’s a long wait for a very average wave.
Rusty.
