The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a real flat spell on the horizon, followed by some messy, blown-out surf. If you’re desperate, keep reading, but don't expect any magic.
We’re looking at a lot of tiny, weak swell for the first stretch. Through the 12th of August, we're seeing waves only around 0.7ft to 1.3ft. It's just not doing anything. The conditions are clean at times, especially with that glassy Saturday afternoon on the 8th, and some offshore winds on the morning of the 11th, but with no swell to push, it’s a lake out there. You’d be better off finding a rock pool to splash in.
The middle of the month shows a slight pulse from the west, bumping the swell up to around 3ft around the 12th and 13th. But the wind turns onshore, and it gets messy. It’s still not rideable. Then we get a little more size on the 15th and 16th, but the period drops and it starts getting lumpy.
The standouts, if you can call them that, are looking like the 21st and 22nd of August. The swell really fills in, with the morning of Friday the 21st seeing a solid 9.8ft of west-southwest swell. But, and this is a big but, that’s accompanied by a fresh 22 mph cross-offshore wind. It might be big, but it will be wild. The following morning, Saturday the 22nd, still has 4.9ft of west swell, but it’s blowing a strong 25 mph cross-onshore. That’s going to be a total washout, more interesting for the kite crew than anyone on a surfboard.
Daymer Point (North Cornwall) is a very sheltered spot, and it rarely breaks. This long run of poor surf is more normal for this area. It’s a frustrating outlook, but it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can and do change, but right now, you’re looking at over a week with nothing to ride before things get too messy to handle. Keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
