The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, the start of this period is a complete write-off for surf. We’ve got a run of strong north winds and lumpy, cross-onshore conditions that will keep the ocean looking like a washing machine. From Thursday the 6th of August all the way through to Friday the 14th of August, the wave quality is poor, with the combined swell energy sitting between 166 and 434 (moderate to strong), but the wind just ruins everything. It’s a solid 9-day stretch of no-go, so don’t even bother paddling out.

The one and only spot we’re looking at is Coos Bay Bastendorf Beach. It’s an exposed beach break that’s very consistent, and it’s beginner-friendly. The first real chance of anything surfable comes Saturday the 15th of August. The morning sees a 6ft swell from the NW with moderate energy (531), but the conditions are marginal, with a light onshore breeze. Saturday afternoon stays similar, 5ft NW swell (441), still only marginal. Sunday the 16th of August hangs on with 4ft NW swell (332), but the wind shifts a little, still only marginal.

Now, Monday the 17th of August is where things start to look a little sweeter. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the NW, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a major positive. The waves will be clean and small, with combined energy at 177 to 196 (weak to moderate). It’s ordinary surf, but it’s surfable, and with no wind, it’ll be smooth. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

The real standout, and honestly the best on offer in the whole 16-day window, comes on Tuesday the 18th of August. The morning brings a light SE offshore wind, clean conditions, and a 2ft swell from the west. The swell period is a very long 15 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy for a spot like this. Combined energy is 266 (moderate). The afternoon stays clean with a light SSW cross-offshore breeze. The waves are tiny, but the quality is good. This is a promising call, but it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on it.

After that, Wednesday the 19th into Thursday the 21st of August drops right back off. The swell drops to 1ft and the wind goes cross-shore, killing the quality. By Friday the 21st of August, we get a glassy morning with a tiny 1ft WNW swell, but it’s ordinary.

So, bottom line: the first week is a total washout. The best bet is Monday the 17th of August for some clean, small waves, and Tuesday the 18th of August is the true highlight with that long-period groundswell and clean offshore winds. After that, it fades out.

Rusty.
