The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Cimaja. It’s a tricky outlook, but let’s break it down.
The overall pattern for the next couple of weeks is frustrating. We’ve got a persistent run of swell, with wave heights mostly in the 4 to 7-foot range, but the wind keeps letting us down. Most of the time, we’re dealing with cross or cross-onshore breezes, which are putting a chop on the face. Not terrible, but not the clean perfection you’d want from a reef break. This is going to be more of a "pick your moment" kind of fortnight than a non-stop classic.
Right off the bat, for Sunday the 23rd, the morning looks the best of a so-so day. We have a 6-foot swell from the SSW, which is a long-period groundswell at 14 seconds. The combined swell energy is quite strong at 2184. The wind is a light offshore from the SW, which will keep things glassy and clean. Water temp is sitting at 83°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not even need a spring suit. It’s the only session today with a clean look.
Moving into Monday the 24th, the swell stays around 5-6 feet from the SSW, and the period stretches to 15-16 seconds. That’s a powerful groundswell with solid energy readings (1670-1827), but the wind switches to a light cross or moderate cross-shore. It’ll be surfable but not the clean lines you’re after. You’ll be dealing with some wind ripples or a cross-chop.
The mid-week, from Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th, is a mixed bag. We see the swell drop a bit to 4-5 feet on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a bit more energy coming back on Thursday morning from a very long-period (20 second) SSW swell, hitting 2207 in combined energy. That Thursday morning window is interesting – a 4-foot swell with 20-second period is a beautiful groundswell, but the wind is light cross-shore, so it won’t be silky smooth. The afternoon of Thursday the 27th sees the swell jump up to 7 feet, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SE, creating a messy cross-chop. That 7 feet is pushing into the territory where it’s getting big for beginners and better left to those with experience, especially with the chop.
This pattern of solid swell but frustrating wind continues right through the end of August and into the beginning of September.
Now, the true standout of the entire forecast is Tuesday morning, September 1st. This is the one you want to clear your schedule for. We’ve got a 7-foot swell from the SW, with a long period of 17 seconds and massive energy at 2775. But the kicker is the wind: the report says it’s glassy. That’s a rare treat. For a few hours, Cimaja will be firing with clean, powerful lines. This is for experienced surfers, as 7 feet is well over the threshold for only experts to handle safely, but for those who can paddle into them, the waves will be incredible. Crowds are likely here.
Following that, the swell holds through Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd, but the winds come back around, dropping the quality. By Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th, the swell fades to 3-3 feet with period dropping to 13 seconds, and the energy is weak (around 399-590). Saturday morning the 5th is another glassy window, but with only 3 feet, it’ll be a fun little longboard wave, not the meaty stuff from earlier. A great option for a beginner or a grovel session.
Into the second week, the pattern is similar: a bump of 5 feet from the SSW on Sunday the 6th with a 16-second period, but the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s surfable but nothing to get overly excited about. The window then fades out with smaller, weaker swells.
Overall, if you’re keen, the only real standout is that glassy morning on the 1st of September. The rest of the time you’ll be surfing solid swell but with average wind conditions. It’s not terrible, but it’s not the Homer Simpson "woohoo" forecast either.
Keep an eye on the charts – sometimes these forecasts change, and that clean window might open up a little more.
Rusty.
