The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the waves rolling in over the next couple of weeks.
First off, it's a pretty grim start for us at Chapadmalal. The water is a touch warmer than the usual for this time of year, sitting at 51°, but that's about the only good news. We’re looking at a long, dry stretch of poor to marginal conditions. The first half of the forecast is a real struggle. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th have some small, weak swell around 3ft to 3ft, but the wind is all wrong, mostly cross-off or cross, and the energy is weak (196 and 112). It's just not worth paddling out. From there, it gets worse. Saturday the 18th through to the end of the following week is a mess of onshore and cross-onshore winds, with that combined energy mostly in the moderate range (124 to 459), but the wind just ruins any chance of quality. The highest energy in this period is on Tuesday the 22nd (223), but it's accompanied by a messy onshore breeze. The swell is short-period, mostly 6 to 10 seconds, so it's all windswell and chop.
After that long, grim run, we finally get a sniff of something better starting on Thursday the 23rd of July. The morning has a light offshore wind from the NNW, and the swell is a clean 4ft from the SSE. The energy is moderate (190). It’s only a 1 out of 10, so it's "surfable but very ordinary," but it's the best we've seen in a while. The afternoon of the 23rd sees a bigger, longer-period groundswell (12 seconds) from the SSE, with much stronger energy (459). The wind is a clean cross-off from the WNW. This is the standout of the first week, but it's still a marginal call.
Now, if you want to talk about a true standout, you have to look way ahead to Wednesday the 30th of July. That's when a massive, super-long-period groundswell (12 seconds) from the SSE slams in. The combined energy is a massive 8127, and the swell is a solid 16ft. The wind is a whisper-light offshore from the NNW. The catch? The report says it's too big for this break. This is an expert-only, absolute beast of a day. The morning of the 30th is the best of the best, but it’s a heavy, dangerous wave. The following day, Thursday the 31st, is still huge with 12ft swell from the SE and a 13-second period, and a clean cross-off wind. The combined energy is still monstrous at 4598. Again, only for the elite.
The rest of the month is a continuation of the poor conditions. The 24th, 25th, and 26th are all small, weak, and onshore. The 27th has a brief moment of light offshore wind, but the swell is only 2ft and weak (72). The 28th is a complete write-off with strong onshore winds. The 29th sees a big jump in swell size to 8ft, but it's a short-period, onshore mess.
So, here’s the bottom line: the first week and a half is a total write-off. The only real standout is the massive, pumping swell arriving on the 30th and 31st of July, but it's strictly for the experts. If you're not a charger, keep your board in the car.
Rusty.
