The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's comin' down the line for us at Chapadmalal. We're lookin' at a bit of a slow start, but there's some promise if you're patient, especially for the more experienced crew.
Alright, the surf's pretty quiet right from Tuesday the 18th of August into Thursday the 22nd. We're talkin' tiny, weak swell – mostly around 1ft to 2ft from the east – with a mix of onshore and cross-off winds makin' it messy or just plain ordinary. Water temp's sittin' at 50°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Not much to get excited about, just a lot of waitin' around.
Now, things get interesting on Saturday the 22nd of August. The morning sees a solid pulse of swell hit – 7ft from the SSW with a 10-second period – and the combined swell energy is cranked up to 1443 (moderate to strong). The wind is clean and cross-offshore out of the WSW, which is prime. However, the guidance is tellin' me this is gettin' too big for this particular break, so that is strictly for the experienced crew only. The afternoon gets messy with a strong cross-shore, so the morning is your only window.
We get another shot on Monday the 24th of August. Another 7ft swell from the SSE, this time with a longer 12-second period and a combined energy of 1324. The wind's off the land from the north, so it'll be clean. Again, this is a bigger swell, so it's one for the experts who know the break. The afternoon gets marginal, so don't sleep on the morning.
After that, the swell backs off. We've got a few days of clean, offshore winds from the 25th of August onwards, but the swell drops to the 3ft to 4ft range. It's surfable, and the conditions will be clean with those offshore breezes, but it's not gonna be a standout. The combined energy is in the 200 to 300 range (weak to moderate). The long 14-second period on the 26th of August morning could offer some nice lines.
From the 28th of August through to the end of the forecast on the 2nd of September, it's a pretty poor run. The swell is tiny again – 2ft to 4ft – with weak energy and mostly onshore or cross-shore wind. It's a long, flat patch with very little to recommend. The 30th of August morning has a moment of glass, but the swell is just too small to be any good.
So, the standout is Saturday the 22nd of August morning for the experienced crew, or Monday the 24th of August morning if you missed it. Both offer solid, clean swell but you've gotta know the spot. For the beginners, there's nothin' in this window that's gonna be friendly.
Rusty.
