The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here with the rundown. It’s a rough patch on the calendar. Over the next 16 days, the boards are gonna be lonely for a good while. The first few days are a total bust.
We finally get a glimmer of life on Tuesday, July 21st. The point at Chapadmalal is the only game in town. It’s a beginner-friendly spot that breaks fairly consistently. The morning is the pick. The swell is tiny, just 1ft from the east, but the wind is light and blowing offshore, giving us glassy conditions. The wave energy is weak (65), so it’s a real scratch session. You’ll find surfable, but very ordinary little waves.
Wednesday, July 22nd is a no-go. Onshore wind from the SSE and a swell of 4ft with a terrible 6-second period creates a messy, choppy mess. The energy is moderate (171), but it’s useless.
Thursday, July 23rd morning gives us a tiny window. Clean conditions with a light offshore breeze. The swell is 2ft from the south, short period, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. Energy is moderate (122). It’s surfable, but still very ordinary.
Friday, July 24th afternoon is the one to circle. The wind goes offshore from the NNW at 15 mph, giving us clean, peeling waves. The swell is 2ft from the south, but the period is a solid 12 seconds, making it a proper groundswell. The energy is moderate (161). This is the best of the bunch. A good point break wave with a bit of push. But remember, when it’s glassy and has a pulse, the crowds can be a “sometimes” thing, so don’t expect a solo session.
After that, it’s a long, dry road. From Saturday, July 25th through to Thursday, July 31st, the swell is either too small or the wind is onshore, or both. The wind is often offshore, keeping the surface clean, but the waves are just too weak to ride. The morning of Friday, July 31st is a cruel tease: glassy conditions with some energy (182) from a 3ft SSE swell, but it’s still just “ordinary.” Then the start of August is a blowout with strong onshore winds and lumpy, choppy surf.
Bottom line: Friday, July 24th afternoon at Chapadmalal is your only real shot at a decent session. It’s not epic, but it’s the cleanest, most promising day of the whole spell.
And for the kitesurfers out there, these windy, weak-swell days create a perfect setup for you at the beach. The paddle surfers are gonna be sitting this one out.
Rusty.
