Table - best surf conditions forecast for Chapadmalal over the next 16 days.
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for our little slice of coast here at Chapadmalal. It's a bit of a mixed bag coming up, so let's break it down.
Right now things are pretty humble. The water's sitting at 51°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. A northwesterly breeze is keeping things clean first thing Wednesday morning, but the swell is tiny, just 2ft of short-period SE windswell. The wave energy is weak (103). It's surfable, but honestly it's very ordinary—nothing to get excited about.
Wednesday afternoon fades with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell stays small and sloppy. Thursday is a write-off with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Friday stays poor, and even though the swell bumps up to 4-4ft, the wind is cross-onshore and messy.
Now, Saturday the 11th of July is the first real glimmer. Early morning, a light NNE breeze keeps it clean, and while the swell is only 2ft, it's a beautiful, long-period 15-second groundswell from the ESE. That's proper energy for a point break like Chapadmalal—long lines, better shaped waves. The wave energy is strong (315). This is the standout of the early window. It'll be small, but if you're a beginner or just want a clean, cruisy session, this is your morning. Saturday afternoon stays clean but the swell drops a touch. Sunday the 12th through Monday the 13th sees clean conditions again with offshore and cross-offshore winds, but the swell hovers around 2-3ft. It's marginal, but rideable if you're keen.
Then we hit a flat spell from Tuesday the 14th through to Thursday the 16th. Swell drops to 1-2ft with very low energy. It's basically a lake out there. Thursday afternoon gets a bit of cross-shore chop. Nothing doing.
We get a bump in size starting Friday the 17th, but it's a short-period windswell (5-6 seconds) and the wind is cross-offshore. The energy picks up, but the wave quality is poor. Saturday the 18th is a bit bigger at 4ft with light winds, but the conditions are still ordinary.
Now, listen, late in the forecast, around Sunday the 19th of July, things get interesting but also heavy. There's a big spike in swell, hitting 6ft with a very short 7-second period from the south on Sunday afternoon. The energy is strong (427). Then Monday the 20th, we're looking at 7-8ft of short-period S/SSE swell with strong onshore winds. This is messy, lumpy, and not for paddle surfing—looks more like a kite-surfing day. Tuesday the 21st pushes to a massive 10ft from the SSE, and the energy is extreme (1446), but it's nuking with a strong cross-onshore wind. That's expert-only territory, and even then, the quality is poor. Wednesday the 22nd is still big at 8ft from the SE, and while the wind is moderate, the swell is too big for this break. Even the best call of the whole run—Wednesday morning—gets a score that says it's too big here. The waves will be fat and unruly.
So here's the takeaway: the true standout is Saturday morning, July 11th. Small, clean, long-period groundswell at Chapamalal. If you want a wave, that's the window. The following weekend (19th-22nd) brings real size, but the winds are poor and it's too big for the break, so keep that one for the advanced crew or the kite surfers.
Rusty.
