The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next few weeks.
Truth is, the opening stretch is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a big pulse of swell rollin’ in over the weekend, but the wind is just wreckin’ it. Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd have some serious size, but that strong cross-onshore breeze has it all chopped up and messy. Not worth paddlin’ out for, trust me.
The real story starts to turn around on Monday the 24th. That’s our standout. Chapadmalal wakes up with a clean 6 ft SSE groundswell. The period is a solid 11 seconds, so there’s proper energy in the water. The combined energy is moderate (870), and the kicker is that glassy, near-calm wind. That’s about as good as it gets for a point break like this. The water is runnin’ at 51°F, which is a good four degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t be shiverin’ as much. Monday morning is the pick of the whole forecast. Monday afternoon sees a little side-chop creep in, but it’s still okay.
Tuesday through to Thursday the 25th to 27th fade a bit in size, but the wind stays clean from the north or west, offering some fun, small waves. Thursday afternoon the 27th has a tiny 3 ft swell with light offshore wind, making for some clean little peelers if you’re on a log.
Then we hit a long dry spell. From Friday the 28th onward, things get tiny. The swell drops to around 2 ft and the energy just plummets. For the next week or more, it’s mostly flat or very ordinary, with just a few knee-high ripples. If you’re desperate, the mornings of the 5th and 6th September have a clean, light offshore wind, but the swell is no bigger than 2 ft. It’s a quiet time for the area.
So, bottom line: get out there Monday morning the 24th for the best clean surf on offer. After that, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
