The Lowdown

Right, grab a coffee, let's have a look at the charts for Chapadmalal. To be honest, it’s a bit of a rough start and then a long quiet spell, but there are a couple of windows that might get the stoke going, especially towards the very end of the period.

We’ve got a quiet start. The first week is mostly small and messy. The water temp is sitting at about 51°F, which is a touch warmer than we’d usually expect for this time of year, so that’s a little bonus if you’re in a steamer.

Wednesday morning the 15th is out. We’re looking at tiny 2ft ENE windswell, with weak energy (49), and a cross-off wind. It's clean, but it’s just not doing anything. That theme carries on through Thursday and Friday. The swell bumps up a little to 2ft - 3ft but it’s still short-period stuff under 8 seconds, and the wind is all over the place. Thursday afternoon gets a bit punchier with energy hitting 177, but the wind is up to 12 mph and cross-off, making it a messy one.

Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see the swell direction swing around to the S, but with it comes strong wind. Saturday morning has a fresh 22 mph cross-shore, which is just going to chop things up. By Sunday, we’ve got 4ft swell but it’s on a cross-onshore breeze. Not good. The whole first week is a write-off for a decent paddle.

The middle of the week has a gap. From Monday the 20th right through to Thursday the 23rd, it’s mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds with poor surf conditions. The swell stays in the 3ft to 4ft range, but the wind is against us. Not worth a second look.

Now, there is a very brief glimmer. On Wednesday the 22nd, the morning goes glassy. The swell is only 3ft from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds, but with zero wind, it’ll be clean as a whistle. The energy is moderate (184). It’s a small window, but for a beginner-friendly point break like Chapadmalal, that morning session could be a fun little grovel. The afternoon turns cross-off and the energy bumps up to 211, which is promising, but the session will be shorter.

Then we hit another big gap. From Thursday the 24th through Saturday the 26th, the wind howls. Friday afternoon has a 22 mph cross-off with 4ft of SW windswell, and Saturday afternoon gets a 28 mph cross-off with 6ft of S swell. That’s not surfable for a paddle; that’s more of a kite session. The energy on Saturday afternoon gets up to 395, but the wind is just too strong.

Finally, the standout of the whole run. Monday morning the 27th of July. This is the one. We’ve got a 6ft groundswell from the SSE with a very long period of 11 seconds. The combined energy is very strong at 764. More importantly, we get a gentle offshore wind from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. The swell direction is a good match for the spot’s optimum from the SSE. This is proper, solid surf for experienced surfers. Anything over 5ft is starting to get too big for beginners, and at 6ft with that power, this is one for the guys who know what they’re doing. The afternoon drops to a 5ft but the wind goes cross-off. Still a great day.

After that, Tuesday the 28th drops right back down to small, weak swell and fresh winds. But then, keep an eye on Wednesday morning the 29th of July. We get a small 3ft swell, but it has a monster period of 15 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. The wind is offshore from the WNW. The energy is moderate (372). Long period swells like this can break a bit straight at a beach break, but at a point break like Chapadmalal, it should wrap in nicely with good shape. It’s a week and a half away, so it’s promising but not locked in, but it has potential for some lined-up, juicy waves if it holds.

So, overall, a lot of mush to wade through, but that Monday the 27th is the clear standout. The Wednesday morning the 22nd is a tiny, clean option for a beginner, and the 29th is a promising, long-range possibility for those who like a long wait between sets.

Rusty.
