Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on offer for your local region.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next few days aren’t looking like anything to get too excited about. We’ve got a bit of a flat spell, but there are a couple of windows that might make it worth paddling out for the patient surfer. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet comes Tuesday the 7th of July. Chapadmalal, that classic point break, is showing some small but rideable waves. Tuesday morning you’re looking at a 4ft swell from the S, with a short 8-second period, and it’s clean with a cross-off wind. The energy’s moderate at best (235). Not gonna set the world on fire, but for a beginner-friendly spot, it’s a chance to get some small waves. Tuesday afternoon actually improves a touch with a cleaner offshore breeze from the WNW and a 3ft SSE swell – still small, but the wind is off and conditions are clean. Again, think of it as a practice session.
Wednesday the 8th of July keeps the small theme going. Morning has a 2ft SE swell with a 10-second period and a cross-off wind – clean but weak energy (102). The afternoon cleans up more with a light offshore WNW breeze and the same 2ft, but the period drops to 9 seconds. Still, it’s gentle and clean.
Thursday the 9th of July we hit a block. Onshore winds from the ESE and E mess things up, the swell is small and the energy is poor. Friday the 10th of July is worse – a 5ft to 5ft SE swell with a short 7-second period, but it’s all cross-onshore and choppy. This is a pass.
Now, Saturday the 11th of July morning is where we get a little glimmer. Chapadmalal has a 3ft ESE swell, a 7-second period, but the wind is a clean cross-off from the WSW and the conditions are clean. The energy is moderate (333). The score isn’t high, but for this run, it’s the best we’ve seen. Afternoon gets messy with rain showers and a strong 30 km/h cross-off wind, so morning is your window.
Sunday the 12th of July is a write-off – strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy seas. Skip it.
Monday the 13th of July morning is another decent opportunity. A clean 3ft ESE swell with a light offshore NNW breeze and moderate energy (220). The afternoon is okay with a 2ft, 12-second period groundswell and an offshore wind, but the energy is lower (193). Decent enough for a small wave session.
Tuesday the 14th of July drops right off – tiny swell, fresh offshore winds, not worth it.
Wednesday the 15th of July sees a pulse of short-period 4ft SSW swell, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. Thursday the 16th of July has a 4ft SSE swell with a clean cross-off, but the energy is moderate (225) and the wind is strong – marginal at best.
Friday the 17th of July morning is a real standout for this period. Chapadmalal with a glassy, clean setup – light offshore NW wind, 4ft ENE swell, 6-second period, and moderate energy (183). The conditions are clean and it’s likely to be a fun, small wave session on the point. This is the call of the week.
After that, the rest of the run into the third week is mostly onshore or cross-shore winds with lumpy chop. Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of July see a bit of size – 5ft ESE swell on the 19th – but it’s cross-onshore and messy. For experienced surfers, there might be a heavy, short-period wave, but it’s not clean. The energy is strong (409), but the conditions kill it.
Bottom line: if you’ve got a Friday the 17th of July morning free, that’s your best bet at Chapadmalal for clean, small waves. The rest is a waiting game.
