The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the coast. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Chapadmalal over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the next few days are a write-off for a decent paddle. We’ve got a big, raw SW swell pourin' in on Friday the 21st with a solid 7ft to 7ft of messy, short-period slop, but that strong 25 mph cross-shore wind is just gonna chop it to bits. Saturday the 22nd is a cruel tease – we're looking at a potent 10ft SSW groundswell (10 seconds) with clean conditions and a massive 2664 combined wave energy on the morning, but the numbers say it's simply too thumping for this point break. That’s a day for the tow crew only, if anyone. Sunday the 23rd is a total loss with a cranky 10ft to 12ft SSE swell and howling onshore winds.
So, we gotta be patient. The first real window for the rest of us opens up on Monday the 24th. The swell has dropped back to a much friendlier 6ft to 7ft from the SSE (690-984 combined energy), and that light NNE wind has turned it glassy with nice, clean conditions. The water is a very unusual 51° and much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit. This is your standout session for the week – easy paddling, clean faces, and the point will be working nicely for beginners and intermediates alike. You might have to share it with a few other surfers, though.
That clean spell hangs on through Tuesday morning, but the swell is fading fast, dropping under head-high. Wednesday the 26th offers a little 4ft to 4ft pulse from the SE with a longer 12-second period, keeping the conditions clean through the mornings and afternoons, but the energy is way down (around 460-529). It’s a longboard and fun-board zone for the rest of that week.
Looking further ahead into the first week of September, the juice is basically gone. We're scraping by on tiny, waist-high leftovers through the 30th and into the 31st. On Tuesday the 1st of September, a scrappy 4ft SSW windswell moves in but gets hammered by a strong cross-shore wind. The real spark is a moment early on Wednesday the 2nd – a small 4ft S swell with glassy, off-the-charts clean conditions. It’s not big, but it might be the most perfectly lined-up wave of the whole forecast. After that, our window closes with weak, onshore junk.
To be honest, if you don’t score Monday the 24th or that glassy Wednesday the 2nd, the next 16 days are a rough go. The only proper size is too big and messy for the paddle surfer. This setup is more interesting for the kite riders when the wind gets up and the swell is over 7ft.
Stay on it.
Rusty.
