The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – it's been a tough stretch for surf around here, and it doesn't look like it's letting up any time soon. The data is showing we're in for a long, flat run with very little to get excited about. There's a big gap of about two weeks from now through to the middle of the month with basically no real surf on offer. Most of what we get is tiny, short-period slop that just isn't worth paddling out for.
Looking at the only spot in the report, Cap St Louis, it's a tricky reef break that's inconsistent at the best of times, and these aren't the best of times. The water is sitting at 78°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 8°F above average, so you won't need a thick wetsuit if you do decide to go for a swim.
The first real glimpse of anything surfable comes right at the very end of the outlook, on Monday the 27th of July. By the afternoon, we finally see some pulse. The swell jumps up to 5ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds – so it's short-period windswell, not the cleanest groundswell. The combined energy is 144 (moderate), which is the strongest reading in the entire 16-day window. Now, the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross from the WNW, so it'll be lumpy and choppy. It's not perfect, but it's the only time we see any real push. This size is getting into the territory where it could be too much for beginners.
Even then, the report still calls it poor surf conditions. Honesty hurts, but that's the reality.
If you're a kite surfer, the afternoon on Saturday the 18th of July could be more interesting. We've got a 4ft W swell and a solid 16 mph cross-wind, and with this beach-and-reef setup, that might be your go.
For the rest of us, it's a long wait. Forecasts can change, but as it stands now, keep your board in the car and your expectations low.
Rusty.
