The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook for Cap St Louis is a tough one right now. There’s a real gap at the start with no surf worth paddling out for. We’re looking at about a week and a half of tiny, weak waves and messy conditions. From Monday the 20th of July right through to the end of the month, the swell is barely a ripple, with heights hanging around 0.7ft to 2ft and periods so short there’s no push in them. The wind is all over the place, and the combined wave energy is mostly in the single digits or low teens – that’s barely a bump in the water. It’s a proper flat spell, so don’t be in a rush.
Things start to get a little more interesting around the 29th of July. On Wednesday morning, we see a small pulse of 2ft swell from the SSE with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits 44, which is still weak but at least it’s something. The wind is light and offshore from the NW, keeping it clean. Still, it’s a tiny wave and the break is inconsistent, so it’s a gamble.
The first real standout, and the only one worth highlighting, lands on Friday the 31st of July. Friday morning, the swell picks up to 3ft from the west with a 6-second period. The combined energy jumps to 123 – moderate energy – and the wind drops to glassy, dead calm. This is the best we’ll see. The swell is small, but those glassy conditions will make it look way better than it is. It’s a reef break, so it’ll handle that west swell alright, though it’s not the preferred direction (optimum is SW). Expect it to be small and clean, but the crowds are often here, so you won’t be alone. The break is also inconsistent, so be patient.
The following morning, Saturday the 1st of August, the swell builds a touch more to 4ft from the west, with a period of 5 seconds. The energy is 77 – still weak though. The wind is cross-shore from the SE, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. Not as good as Friday.
The water temperature anomaly is average for the time of year, so don’t expect any surprises on that front.
After that, it fades back into small, choppy conditions. The second week has a few more tiny pulses, but nothing to get excited about. The 3rd of August has a glassy morning with 2ft from the SW, but it’s a fleeting moment.
So, bottom line: there’s a long, flat gap. The only real chance for a decent surf is Friday the 31st of July morning, when the glassy conditions will make the most of that small 3ft west swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best on offer.
