The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. I’ll be honest with ya – the next 16 days are a roll of the dice at Anglet - Les Dunes. There’s some quality on the way, but also a fair chunk of flatness and blustery junk. Let’s break it down.
The first real standout is Thursday morning, August 27th. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period. The wind is glassy – dead calm – so the surface is gonna be like a sheet of glass. The water temp is 76° – that’s way warmer than average for August, so ditch the rubber. The combined energy is moderate (331), so enough juice to keep you moving. This is a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent beach break, and it’ll be a treat.
Now, Friday morning, the 28th – this is the heavy one. A massive 10ft swell from the WNW, with a long 12-second period (groundswell). The combined energy is insane (2697). This is for experts only – it’s too big for beginners, and the light cross-onshore wind from the SW will put a bit of chop on it. If you’re not charging, stay on the sand.
Saturday morning, the 29th, is your next best bet. Swell drops to a solid 7ft from the WNW (10-second period), and the wind goes glassy again from the WNW. The energy is still strong (788). Clean, powerful, and a step down from Friday, but still overhead. Good for anyone comfortable in that size.
Sunday morning, the 30th, we’re back to 5ft from the NW (9-second period), with a light offshore breeze from the E. Combined energy is moderate (367). Nice and clean – a fun session for intermediates.
After that, it flatlines. From Monday, August 31st, through Friday, September 4th, the swell drops to under 3ft and the wind is all over the place. That’s a solid five-day gap where you won’t find a ride worth taking.
Things perk up Saturday, September 5th. Morning glass-off with 5ft from the NW (9-second period). Energy is moderate (382). A good, quick window before the wind turns messy.
Sunday, September 6th, is another glassy morning – 5ft from the NW at a 10-second period. Energy is moderate (432). Clean and cruisy.
Then into the second week, Monday, September 7th. A big bump – 8ft from the NW with a long 12-second period. Energy is strong (1728). But the wind is onshore from the W, so it’s gonna be lumpy and messy. The afternoon is a bit better wind-wise, with a cross-onshore, but the swell is still 7ft. This setup with big swell and onshore wind would be better for kite surfing than a paddle.
Your true standout mornings are Thursday the 27th and Saturday the 29th. The big Friday is a spectacle, but not for the average surfer.
Rusty.
