The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the line for the next couple of weeks.
First things first, the water is sitting at 77°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual, so you’ll be surfing in a bathtub.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, it's pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy waves. From the 17th right through to the 28th of July, the swell is barely a whisper, mostly under 3ft, with short, weak periods. The winds are mostly cross-on or onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting. The energy is pathetic, with values sitting in the low double digits and rarely cracking 100. It’s a real bust.
We do finally see a pulse of energy kicking in on the 27th and 28th, with the combined energy climbing into the 100s and 162, but the wind is still onshore and messy, so it’s not going to be a pretty picture. The swell is still small, under 3ft, and it’s just not coming together.
The real standout, and the only time I’d get excited, is the very end of the run. Look at the morning of Friday, the 31st of July. The swell jumps up to a solid 8ft from the NW, with a proper long period of 11 seconds giving it some real grunt. The combined energy is a massive 1473, so there’s plenty of power. The wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror. That’s a clean, powerful NW groundswell, but at 8ft it’s getting into expert-only territory for a beach break. It’s a big, powerful wave, and it’s going to be a handful for anyone not comfortable in serious surf. The crowd situation at Anglet - Les Dunes can be an issue sometimes, so expect company if you’re out there.
The afternoon of the 31st drops a bit to 7ft, but the wind swings onshore, so the morning is definitely the window.
After that, the swell backs off again on the 1st of August, dropping to 5ft and then 4ft, with the wind turning messy again.
So, to be honest, you’re looking at about 10 days of nothing until the 27th, and even then it’s marginal. The one true standout is the glassy, powerful morning of the 31st of July. That’s the one to chase if you’ve got the skills for it.
Rusty.
