The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Anglet - Les Dunes over the next couple of weeks.
The outlook is a bit of a slow burn with a long stretch of nothing much to get excited about, but there’s a potential standout right at the very end of the run.
We start off with a real flat spell. From Thursday 16th July right through to the end of the month, the surf is seriously small and messy. The water is a notable 76°F with a big anomaly of 7°F – much warmer than normal for this time of year, so the swimming is nice, but the waves aren't playing ball. For days on end, we’re looking at weak, short-period windswell below 3ft, often with onshore or cross-onshore winds and energy readings barely cracking 100 (weak energy). There’s a brief moment on Tuesday 21st July morning with a clean, cross-off breeze from the NE and waves around 3ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the energy is weak (65), so it’s really just a small, lackluster session. That’s the only real sniff of anything surfable for a solid two weeks.
The real story, and the one to circle on the calendar, is Friday 31st July morning. This is the stand-out. The swell pumps up to a solid 7ft from the NW with a 12-second period – a proper groundswell with plenty of punch. The combined energy hits 1094, which is strong, so there’s real power in the water. It’s a little too big for beginners, but for experienced surfers, the conditions are excellent. The wind is a light cross-off from the NE, keeping it clean. The only downside? The swell is a bit long-period for a beach break, so it might be a little straight, but when you’ve got that energy and those winds, you paddle out anyway. The afternoon chops up with a cross-onshore breeze, so make sure you’re in the water for the morning session.
So, bottom line: a long, dry gap of nearly two weeks with barely a wave, then a cracking morning right at the end of the forecast. Keep an eye on the long-range, because that one on the 31st could be the one that saves the month.
