The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell to get through. The first few days are going to be pretty lifeless, with tiny, weak waves and mostly poor conditions. Don’t bother paddling out on Tuesday 18th or Wednesday 19th—it’s all small, messy, and not worth your time. We’ll be waiting until Thursday 20th for the first real signs of life.
Thursday 20th morning is our first little window. We’ve got a clean, glassy start at Anglet - Les Dunes with a light SW wind. The swell is coming from the NW at 4ft, which is a nice little groundswell with a period of 11 seconds. That’s proper energy for a beach break, giving you some well-shaped waves and longer lulls between sets. The combined energy is a solid 304, so there’s a bit of punch there. The water is sitting at 77°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year—very unusual, so you’re in for a warm, pleasant session. The afternoon gets a bit choppy with a cross-onshore wind, so make sure you get it in the morning.
Friday 21st sees the swell bump up to 5ft, but the wind is onshore and the conditions are marginal. It’s a bit of a gamble, and the crowd factor is listed as “sometimes” busy, so you might have company. Definitely not a standout.
Saturday 22nd is a nice little surprise. A light ESE wind in the morning gives us clean, cross-offshore conditions, with 4ft of NW swell at 9 seconds. The energy is moderate at 241, and it’s surfable and clean. The afternoon stays clean with an offshore wind, but the waves drop a bit to 4ft. Good for a grovel on a log.
Sunday 23rd is a return to the small stuff. The swell is dropping off fast, back down to 3ft. It’s clean with a glassy morning, but there’s just not enough push to get excited about.
The following week from Monday 24th to Thursday 27th is a proper desert. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions are poor. I wouldn’t bother checking the forecast during this stretch—it’s a write-off.
Friday 28th shows a glimmer. A clean SE cross-offshore wind and 3ft of NW swell at 10 seconds. The energy is 150, so it’s weak, but it’s clean and rideable. Ordinary, but you’ll get wet.
Saturday 29th is similar. A clean offshore wind in the morning with 4ft of NW swell. The energy moves up to 196. It’s still not a standout, but it’s a million times better than the previous week.
Now, here’s the one to keep an eye on. Sunday 30th afternoon has a nice pulse. 5ft of NW swell at 9 seconds, with a clean cross-offshore NNE breeze. The energy jumps to 347, and the conditions are described as “expect good surf conditions.” This is the best of the first week, but it’s a Sunday afternoon sesh, so expect a few people out.
Monday 31st morning is another good one. Glassy conditions with a NNW wind, 4ft of NW swell at 8 seconds. The energy is 205, and it’s clean. A solid morning surf.
Then, we get to the real standout. Tuesday 1st September morning is a bit ordinary, but Tuesday 1st September afternoon is where it’s at. The swell jumps to 5ft, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it real groundswell quality. The combined energy is a massive 595 (moderate to strong). The wind is glassy from the north, so the conditions will be pristine. This is a very good surf window. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might not be alone, but with that quality, it’s worth the paddle.
Wednesday 2nd September has the same size swell but the wind turns onshore in the afternoon, and the energy is massive at 915, but it’s going to be choppy and messy. The morning is cross-shore, so it’s a bit of a gamble. I’d stick to the Tuesday afternoon as the clear winner.
So, to wrap it up: the first few days are a flat, frustrating wait. Thursday 20th morning is a nice warm-up. The standout is unquestionably Tuesday 1st September afternoon at Anglet - Les Dunes. Glassy, clean, 5ft of NW groundswell with a long 11-second period, and a massive 595 energy rating. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The second best is Sunday 30th afternoon, with a solid 5ft and clean cross-offshore winds.
Stay stoked, and don’t get too bummed about the flat start—it’ll come good.
Rusty.
