The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles. Let's break down the surf for Anglet - Les Dunes.
For the next week and a half, it’s pretty grim. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly junk, and the water is a warm 77°F, which is a massive 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bathtub, but the waves just aren't happening. From Tuesday 14th July right through to Thursday 23rd July, we’re looking at knee-high slop with a combined energy barely cracking 50 (8-52). There’s a moment on the morning of Monday 20th where the wind goes offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be clean, but the swell is only 2ft – it’s a longboard-only session at best.
The real action starts to show up on Friday 24th July. The morning sees a new pulse of groundswell from the NW with a period of 14 seconds and a combined energy of 316, but it’s only 2ft. That’s a long-period, clean swell, but still tiny. Very marginal.
Then, on Saturday 25th July, we get a proper spike. The morning brings a 7ft swell from the WNW, period 11 seconds, and energy pumping at 1018. That’s a lot of power, but the wind is onshore from the west at 9 mph. It’s going to be big, messy, and blown out. That’s expert-only territory, and even then it’s not pretty. By the afternoon, it’s 7ft with the same onshore wind, but the energy drops slightly to 1012. This is the biggest swell of the window, but the quality is poor – honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
While the weekend of the 26th and 27th drops back into the 5ft to 5ft range, it’s still onshore and choppy. The real standout is the morning of Tuesday 28th July. The swell drops a touch to 5ft from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind goes glassy from the SW. That’s a clean window with moderate energy (382) and a decent wave size for a beginner-friendly spot. It’s the only morning in the whole forecast that looks genuinely good for a paddle. Be aware though, this spot is fairly consistent and can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
The final shout is the morning of Wednesday 29th July. Another glassy start with a 4ft NW swell and period 9 seconds, energy at 231. It’s a smaller, cleaner version of the previous day. A solid morning for a longboard or a funboard.
So, to wrap it up: the first ten days are essentially a write-off. The standout is the morning of Tuesday 28th July for the cleanest conditions, with the morning of Wednesday 29th July as a solid backup.
Rusty.
