The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Anglet - Les Dunes.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a tough one to love. The swell is small, the winds are messy, and the wave energy is just not there. The water is way warmer than usual for this time of year, you're looking at about 77°F which is a very unusual 7°F warmer than the norm. That’s a nice surprise for the skin, but it won’t help with the waves.
From Sunday the 19th right through to the 27th, it’s pretty much a bust. We’re talking tiny swells, mostly under 3ft, with short, weak periods. The wave energy is pathetic, often in the low double digits, barely reaching 108 (moderate energy) on Monday afternoon. The wind is mostly cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s no real power in the water, just a lot of frustration.
You’ll see a little spike around Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell picks up to 5ft to 5ft from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds and wave energy jumping to 349 (moderate energy). But the wind is still a problem – cross-shore and cross-onshore, making it a choppy, bumpy mess. It’s a marginal call at best, more for the die-hards than anyone looking for a good session.
The real standout is the very end of the run. Check out Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning sees a tiny 3ft NW swell, but look at that wind – glassy. And the wave energy is a weak 86, but combined with the clean conditions, it’s the cleanest, most user-friendly window we’ve seen. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds are sometimes a thing here, so get there early.
Monday the 3rd of August morning is also worth a mention. A light offshore breeze will clean up the 2ft swell, making it surfable but very ordinary. It’s a summer board kind of day, not a serious one.
So, the honest truth? This is a long, slow stretch. The standout is that glassy morning on the 2nd of August – it’s your best bet. Everything else is a wait-and-see proposition. Hang in there, the forecasts can change.
Rusty.
