Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the Basque coast, just at Anglet - Les Dunes.
Overall, it's a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. We've got a long stretch of small, messy surf and onshore winds. There are a couple of windows where things clean up, but you've got to be patient. For the most part, the conditions just aren't coming together for a decent paddle.
Right now, starting off Monday the 6th of July, we've got tiny 2ft swell from the NW. The wind's a light cross-off from the NNE, so the waves are clean, but with combined swell energy at just 55 (weak), there's almost no power. It's surfable for a beginner, but nothing to get excited about.
Then we hit a real flat spell. From Tuesday the 7th right through to Friday the 10th of July, it's all onshore or cross-onshore winds and waves barely reaching 2ft. The conditions are poor across the board. You’d be better off doing something else.
Saturday the 11th of July morning shows a glimmer of hope. The swell is still small at 2ft, but the wind goes offshore from the ENE, making it clean. The period stretches to 12 seconds, and energy jumps to 136 (moderate), suggesting a bit more push. It's still small, but for a beginner-friendly break, that clean morning session could be alright. The afternoon gets chopped up by a moderate cross-shore breeze, so get out early.
Sunday the 12th is the standout of this whole outlook. The early morning has glassy conditions with a light SE breeze, and a 3ft NW swell at 10 seconds. The combined energy is 113 (moderate). This will be the cleanest, most inviting surf of the whole forecast window. It's not big, but for a beginner spot, that glassy surface will make it feel a lot better than it is. The afternoon gets ruined by a strong 30 km/h onshore wind though, so it’s a one-session window.
From Monday the 13th right through to Saturday the 18th of July, it’s a grim run of onshore and cross-onshore winds with tiny, weak swell. The combined energy is mostly in the weak to moderate zone, but it's all wind-affected. There are a few small windows but nothing worth chasing.
Now, looking out further, Sunday the 19th of July morning shows a 4ft NW swell, but it's blowing onshore at 10 km/h from the WNW, so it’ll be lumpy. The combined energy is up at 231 (strong), so there's some real power in the water, but the wind is just ruining it. That's a kite surfer's forecast, not a paddle surfer's.
Finally, on Monday the 20th of July, we get another glassy morning. The wind swings to a glassy NE at 5 km/h. The swell is 4ft from the NW, period 8 seconds, with combined energy at 164 (strong). Again, it's a small window of clean conditions before the cross-shore wind kicks in during the afternoon. A very early bird special.
So, to sum it up: Sunday morning the 12th of July is your best bet. That glassy, clean 3ft swell will be the most fun you'll have. The second pick is Monday morning the 20th of July, for another glassy window with a bit more size (4ft) but a shorter period. Just don't sleep in.
Rusty.
