Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got on the cards for the next couple of weeks at your local stretch. We'll be surfing Anglet - Les Dunes.
It's a tough start, no two ways about it. The water's sitting at 74°F with an anomaly way above the norm, so it's much warmer than usual for the time of year. That's the only bit of good news for a while, because the swell is tiny and the wind has been a pain. For the first week, we're looking at a long stretch of poor conditions, with nothing worth paddling out for until maybe Monday morning the 13th. Even then, it's only small, weak stuff.
Honestly, the best bet for a proper surf is way off, on Saturday the 18th of July. The swell picks up to a solid 4ft from the NW, with a moderate energy reading of 313. That's the biggest we're going to see in this entire forecast, and it's got some welly behind it. The period sits at 9 seconds, so it'll have just enough shape. But here's the kicker—it's looking like a direct onshore wind from the west, so it's going to be messy. If you're an expert who can handle choppy, open beach conditions, it's the only real swell of note. For the rest of us, it's going to be a frustrating one to watch.
Now, there are a few mornings with glassy conditions and tiny, knee-high waves. Thursday the 16th of July morning, for instance, has ENE offshore winds—just a slight air—and a clean 2ft from the WNW. It's not going to get the heart racing, but for a longboard or a foamie in the summer sun, it's something. The energy is only 86, so it's weak, but the offshore wind is a major positive for a clean, smooth surface. Just be aware that the wind turns cross-onshore by the afternoon, so it's a morning-only window.
For kite surfing, this stretch might look more interesting than paddle surfing on a lot of these days, especially when the wind is up and the swell is small or onshore.
To sum it up: there's a big gap of very poor, small surf until mid-July. The only real standout is that Saturday the 18th, but it's a long way off and the wind is a real concern. Keep an eye on it—forecasts can change.
Rusty.
