The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a little window of surf to kick things off, but honestly, it’s a pretty short-lived buzz. The only real standout in the whole 16-day run is gonna be Tuesday morning, July 28th, at Anglet - La Piscine. That morning, we’ve got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the NW with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is light and offshore from the east at 3 mph, so it’s gonna be glassy and lined up. The water is sitting at 77°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, so you’ll be surfing in a bath. The combined energy is hitting 362 (moderate wave energy), so there’s plenty of push behind those waves. This is the best on offer, no question.
But it’s a short window. That afternoon the wind swings north, turning cross-shore, and the quality drops. From Wednesday, July 29th, all the way through to Monday, August 12th, it’s a long, grim stretch of poor surf conditions. The swell drops off to under 3ft for most of it, with onshore and cross-onshore winds from the west and northwest making a mess of things. There’s a tiny blip on Monday morning, August 10th, with clean offshore winds from the east and a 3ft swell, but it’s weak and ordinary – really just a tease.
Then, finally, on Wednesday morning, August 12th, we get a bit of hope. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes glassy from the west at just 3 mph. The combined energy is 441 (still moderate, but the strongest in the whole run). That’s going to be clean and fun, but it’s a long way off – over two weeks out – so keep your fingers crossed. The afternoon shows a risk of thunderstorms, so grab that morning session.
Overall, a real case of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it. Tuesday morning is the one to target, and maybe the morning of August 12th if you’re feeling lucky. That’s a solid 10-day gap of nothing in between, so don’t plan a trip around this unless you’re happy to sit on the beach.
Rusty.
