The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.

We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch overall. The swell is tiny and the conditions are mostly ordinary, so don’t expect any fireworks. There’s a real gap at the start with no surf worth mentioning until Thursday the 6th of August, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. The best energy shows up around the 15th and 16th of August, but even that comes with a catch.

First up, Anglet - La Piscine. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. The first few days are a write-off – Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th are all tiny, weak waves with poor surf conditions. The combined energy is barely there, reading 35 to 49 (weak energy). The winds are mostly cross-onshore, making it a mess. Not worth paddling out.

Thursday morning the 6th of August is where we finally see something. The swell picks up a bit to 3ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 126 (moderate wave energy). The wind is glassy, which is a major positive – it’ll be clean. But the waves are still "surfable but very ordinary." It’s a small, weak swell, so don’t expect barrels. Still, that glassy morning window is the best you’ll get for a few days.

The rest of the first week is more of the same: ankle to knee-high waves, mostly cross-onshore winds, and poor conditions. The mornings on the 7th and 8th of August offer a little bit of clean glass, but the swell is small and weak (65 and 50 combined energy, respectively). It’s a gentle paddle and a few soft waves if you’re desperate.

The second week, around the 10th to 14th of August, is a real slump. The swell drops even further, with heights under 2ft and combined energy dipping into the 30s and 40s. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

Now, the real standout – and the only one worth highlighting – arrives on Sunday the 16th of August. The morning session at Anglet - La Piscine sees a pulse of swell: 5ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 188 (moderate wave energy). The wind is glassy, meaning the waves will be clean. The swell direction is from the NW, which matches the optimum W direction for this exposed beach break, so it’s in the right window. The 5ft height is still manageable for most, but it’s edging toward the bigger end for beginners. It’s not giant, but it’s the biggest, cleanest surf we’ll see. The crowds are "sometimes" a problem, so expect a few heads out there. This is the pick of the fortnight.

After that, Monday the 17th of August has a similar size (4-4ft from the NW), but the winds are onshore, so it’ll be choppier. The energy is still there (143-189), but the quality drops fast.

The final days of the outlook, from the 18th of August onward, revert back to tiny, weak, poor-quality surf. The combined energy falls back under 70. It’s a fade-out.

So, to sum it up: the whole period is mostly small and weak. The only real bright spot is the morning of Sunday the 16th of August at Anglet - La Piscine, with glassy conditions and the most swell we’ll see. Get on it if you can, because the rest of the time, you’ll be fighting for scraps.

Rusty.
