Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Anglet - La Piscine.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough read. The whole 16-day window is looking flat and disappointing. There’s a long stretch of poor surf with hardly any energy to speak of. The first real chance to even think about a paddle doesn’t come around until Saturday the 8th of August, and even then, it’s barely a whisper.

The patterned swell is coming from the west-northwest, but it’s tiny, mostly around 0.7 ft to 3 ft, and the period is short, between 4 and 11 seconds, so there’s no grunt behind it. The combined energy of all swells directed here is barely nudging into triple digits once, and most days it’s sitting in the weak 20s, 30s, or 40s. It’s just not enough to push any kind of real wave.

For the first week, from Friday the 31st of July right through to Friday the 7th of August, every session is marked as poor surf conditions. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the water’s choppy or messy. There’s a morning of glass on Wednesday the 5th of August, with a north wind at 3 mph, but the swell is a pathetic 1 ft. It’s a tease, not a session.

The one standout, and I’m stretching the word here, is the morning of Saturday the 8th of August. We’ve got a tiny 3 ft swell from the west-northwest, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is glassy from the north-northeast at 3 mph, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy hits 61, which is the highest we’ll see. It’s listed as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." Honestly, for a proper wave, it’s not enough. The swell is too small and weak for any real pull, but if you’re desperate for a splash on a longboard or a foamie, it’s the only window that’s even close to worth it. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.

Sunday the 9th of August morning is another glassy session with a 2 ft wave, but it’s even weaker. After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy rubbish for the rest of the outlook.

The takeaway is clear: the surf is virtually non-existent. For a spot that’s exposed to the west swell, this is a flat spell. It’s not a time for paddle surfing; if you’re into kite surfing, the cross-onshore breezes might offer something, but for a wave rider, it’s a waiting game.
