The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

It's a bit of a slow start, but there's some real promise later on. The water is sitting at a toasty 76°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you'll be comfortable in a shorty or even just boardshorts.

For the first few days, we're looking at small, weak, onshore slop. Thursday morning at Anglet - La Piscine is glassy but with a tiny 1 ft swell from the NW at 8 seconds, and the energy is low (20). It's a write-off. The afternoon goes cross-on and choppy. Friday is more of the same, with the swell just barely picking up but still messy. Honestly, don't bother waxing up until the weekend.

Saturday the 29th morning is where we start to see a flicker. The wind goes glassy with an offshore easterly, and the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the WNW at 9 seconds, with moderate energy (354). It's not huge, but those clean conditions make it worth a paddle. The afternoon gets cross-shore and a bit bumpy. Sunday the 30th morning is also looking promising with a clean offshore breeze and a 5 ft NW swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds.

Monday the 31st has a pulse of energy coming through with the swell hitting 6 ft from the NW at 10 seconds, and the energy is getting up there (546). The wind is a light cross-on, so it'll be a bit lumpy, but there's some push. Tuesday the 1st of September morning is clean with an offshore wind and a 5 ft WNW swell, but again, it's just average.

The real standout, the one you've been waiting for, is Saturday the 5th of September. The morning is looking epic: glassy conditions, a clean offshore breeze, and a solid 5 ft groundswell from the NW with a nice long period of 12 seconds. The energy is strong (656). That's the kind of setup that will have the banks firing. Get on it. Sunday the 6th is also a good shout with a similar 5 ft groundswell and glassy conditions, but the period is a touch shorter at 11 seconds.

Early the following week, we drop off a bit, but then Tuesday the 8th of September is another one to circle. The morning is clean with an offshore wind and a 6 ft NW swell at 11 seconds and strong energy (708). That's a lot of water moving. The afternoon gets a bit cross-on, so make it a dawn patrol mission.

The final week gets a bit messy again. Thursday the 10th sees a 7 ft NW swell, but that's getting into expert territory with a short period and a cross-shore wind. The kite surfers might be having more fun than the paddle crew on the beach break that day.

So, to sum it up: the first few days are a write-off. The best windows are the mornings of the 29th and 30th of August for a small clean wave, but the absolute standouts are the mornings of the 5th, 6th, and 8th of September. Get those dates in the calendar.

Rusty.
