The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break this down in feet and degrees.
Right now, it’s a pretty quiet scene for the next couple of weeks here at Anglet - La Piscine. Water temp is about 75°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nice for hanging out, but it doesn’t help the waves.
We’ve got a real dry spell coming your way. From Wednesday morning all the way through Monday, August 24th, it’s essentially flat or tiny. The few bumps we see are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, leaving us with chop and poor conditions. Even when we get a little more size on Sunday afternoon the 16th, it’s only about 4ft from the NW with a short period of 8 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore – not worth paddling out. The energy readings are weak, mostly in the double digits. That stretch is a write-off.
The one standout, and I mean the *only* one to circle on your calendar, is Tuesday morning, August 25th. The stars line up for us. We get a clean 4ft swell from the NW, with a 9-second period – that’s solid groundswell. The wind goes offshore from the east at about 6 mph, and it’s clear skies. That water will be glassy clean, and the combined energy hits 216 (moderate). This is your window. It’s not huge, but with that clean offshore wind and decent swell, you’ll get some fun, shapely rides. Expect some company in the water, as it’s usually busy on a good day.
The next morning, Wednesday the 26th, is also clean with offshore wind, but the swell drops to about 3ft – much smaller and only a backup.
For the rest of the window, we get some bigger swell late on Thursday the 27th afternoon – about 8ft from the NW at 8 seconds – but that’s short-period junk with onshore wind. That’s only for experts and honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle session.
So bottom line: the next week and a half is a bust. Save your energy for that Tuesday morning, August 25th. It’s your best, and nearly only, shot at a clean, fun session. Conditions can change, but right now, that’s the one.
Rusty.
