The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. This is Rusty.
Look, I'm gonna level with you – the next week and a bit at Anglet - La Piscine is pretty grim. We've got a real dry spell on our hands. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of August, it's mostly junk. Tiny waves, onshore winds, or messy conditions. You’ll see a few mornings on the 26th and 27th with a tiny, clean 2ft to 2ft WNW swell, but it’s barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at 76°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be cold while you're waiting.
Then we get a pulse of energy around the 27th afternoon and into the 28th, with combined swell energy hitting 340 (moderate), then 717 (strong) on the Friday afternoon. But it’s all onshore, gusty, and steep – 8ft with a short 7-second period and onshore winds. That's a washing machine, not a surf session. This pattern holds into the first days of September – lots of swell, but the wind is just wrecking it.
Now, for the highlight. Mark your calendar for the morning of Monday, September 1st. It’s not a massive swell – about 6ft from the NW – but the period is a solid 10 seconds (groundswell), and we get glassy conditions. The combined energy is strong at 535. The forecast says "expect very good surf conditions," and with a light easterly breeze keeping it clean, this is the window. It’s still a beach break, so that long-period groundswell might make it a bit straight, but on a morning like that with no wind, you take it. It’ll be best for experienced guys as it's over 5ft, but still manageable.
The other standout is the morning of Sunday, September 7th. This one is a bit further out, so less certain, but it looks promising. We’ve got a 4ft WNW groundswell with a very long 16-second period and light offshore easterly winds. Combined energy is a massive 996 (strong). That long period means the sets will be spread out, but the wave shape at this point break setup should be excellent. This is the best-looking swell of the whole forecast, if the wind holds. Crowds are likely here, so get in early.
Outside of those two windows, it's mainly for the hardcore or the kites. The 4th and 5th of September bring heavy onshore wind with 8ft to 10ft of messy swell – that’s expert-only stuff, and honestly, looks better for kite surfing than a paddle. The 6th of September morning is cleaner with a 7ft swell, but still onshore.
Rusty.
