The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the goods on what’s happening at La Piscine (Anglet - La Piscine) for the next couple of weeks.
First off, let’s be real—this is a tough start. The water is a balmy 77°, which is a solid 7° warmer than normal for this time of year, so it feels like a bath. But the surf? It’s a struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell to kick things off. From Friday afternoon all the way through the weekend, it’s a mess. Onshore winds and weak, short-period windswell are making for poor conditions. The combined energy is low, with readings like 18 and 185 (moderate), but the wind is just ruining any chance of a clean wave. The swell is mostly from the W to WNW, with heights from 1 ft up to 7 ft, but it’s all blown out.
Saturday morning pumps up to 5 ft, but a fresh onshore wind from the W at 19 mph makes it a total write-off. Saturday afternoon sees the biggest swell of the whole run at 7 ft from the WNW, but with a cross-on wind and a risk of thunderstorms, combined with a combined energy of 433 (strong), it’s more of a wind-blown mess than a surfer’s paradise. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, not worth it.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on Monday, July 27th. The morning shows 3 ft from the NW with a period lengthening to 11 seconds, and a light breeze. The combined energy sits at 240 (moderate). It’s only rated as marginal, but it’s the first sign of a pulse. The real window opens up on Tuesday morning, July 28th. The wind goes glassy, coming from the E at only 3 mph. The swell is 4 ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is solid at 318 (moderate). This is the standout moment. The glassy conditions will make La Piscine look like a mirror. It’s not huge, but it will be clean and fun. Watch for the crowds, though—this spot can get busy.
The glassy conditions carry into Wednesday morning, July 29th, with a similar 3 ft NW swell, but the energy drops to 166 (moderate). Still a nice morning session. Thursday morning, July 30th, is another glassy option with 3 ft NW swell, but the energy is fading to 98 (weak). After that, the surf drops off a cliff. From Friday, July 31st, through to the end of the run on August 8th, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves, mostly under 3 ft, with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The only exception is a couple of mornings with offshore or cross-offshore winds, but the swell is just too small to do anything with.
The real standout is the morning of Tuesday, July 28th. It’s not a big day, but it’s the cleanest, most rideable surf you’ll see in this whole forecast. For the rest of it, you’re better off waiting for the next proper swell to fill in.
Rusty.
