The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and we’re talking surf, but it’s a rough patch.
First off, I gotta be honest—this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at Agami, and for the first ten days or so, it’s a whole lot of nothin’ good. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, the swell is small and weak, and the energy is just pathetic. The combined energy reading is 67 at the start, and it barely tickles the triple digits for days. Basically, it’s a flat spell with a side of chop.
We finally see a little pulse of energy on Friday, July 24th, with some swell from the WNW, but the wind is still onshore and the score is a zero. Don’t get excited.
Then, on Sunday, July 26th, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 277. That’s moderate energy, but the wind is a cross-on 12-16 mph, making it choppy and blown out. For a beginner-friendly break like Agami that rarely breaks, this is a mess. It’s too big for beginners anyway, and the wind is cruel. I’d say this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The highlight, if you can call it that, comes on Saturday, August 1st. The morning is glassy—wind is dead calm, 0 mph. That’s a major positive. The swell is 4ft from the NNW with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is 170 (moderate). The water temperature is about average for the time of year. For a spot that rarely breaks, getting clean, glassy conditions is a rare treat. The crowd is sometimes there, so you might have some company. But the swell direction is NNW, and the optimum for Agami is N, so it’s a bit off. Still, it’s the best on offer across the whole 16 days. The period is short, so expect weaker, choppier waves, but at least it’ll be clean.
After that, Sunday, August 2nd, drops back to marginal with light cross-onshore wind. The window closes fast.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. Saturday, August 1st morning is your one true standout—glassy, clean, with a small but rideable swell. If you’re a local and you’ve been waiting, that’s your window. The rest? Leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
