The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Agami’s got cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week-plus is a real bust. From Tuesday the 18th of August right through to the morning of Friday the 28th of August, there’s hardly any surf worth paddling for. Swell heights are down around 1 to 3 feet, with short periods of 3 to 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak, barely cracking 100 (topping out at a measly 84 on that first Tuesday). Wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, ruining any chance of clean waves. Even on Wednesday morning the 19th when it goes glassy, the swell is only 1ft – a total non-starter. This is a long stretch of flat water.
Things finally perk up a bit toward the end of August. On Friday the 28th of August, a pulse of swell arrives: 6ft from the NW with an 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 445 – that’s moderate energy and the biggest we’ll see. But the wind is onshore at 9 mph from the NW, so it’s blown out. That trend sticks for Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August, with swell holding 5 to 6ft from the NW, but the wind stays fresh and onshore (15-19 mph), making for lumpy, choppy conditions. Combined energy stays between 247 and 362, but the quality is poor – you’d be better off with a kite than a paddle board out there.
The closest thing to a highlight is Monday the 31st of August. The morning shows a 6ft NW swell with an 8-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 467. That’s the most energy we’ll see in the whole period. But once again, the wind is onshore at 15 mph, so it’s going to be bumpy and messy. It’s the biggest push, but not a clean one.
By Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell drops back to 3 to 4ft with onshore winds, and we’re back to marginal stuff.
So, bottom line? There isn’t a single day in this 16-day stretch that I’d call a real winner. If you’re desperate for size, Monday the 31st of August is your best shot, but expect a fight with the wind. Flat spells like this happen; don’t sweat it too much, the forecast can always change.
Rusty.
