The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm lookin' at the charts for our local stretch here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough run. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any kind of decent paddle session. We're staring down the barrel of a long, flat spell with hardly a ripple to get excited about.
Right out of the gate, from Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th, it’s pretty hopeless. Tiny, weak windswell, mostly onshore winds, and the combined wave energy is barely ticking over, sitting in the low double digits and struggling to break 100. It’s a total no-go.
Then we get a little tease on Saturday the 25th morning at Agami. The wind finally swings offshore from the SSE, and we see a tiny 2ft NNW swell. The combined energy is still weak at 91, and the wave period is a short 7 seconds. It’s surfable if you’re desperate for a splash on a log, but "ordinary" is being kind. After that, it’s right back to onshore junk.
There’s a bump in the swell on Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 29th, with the combined energy climbing into the 200s and 300s, and wave heights pushing over 5ft. But here's the kicker – the wind is a mess. It's cross-onshore and strong, making everything choppy and blown out. For any surfer, it's just poor conditions. For a kite surfer, that setup with the strong cross-onshore wind and lumpy water would be way more interesting than it is for us.
The last few days into early August fizzle out completely, with wave heights dropping below 2ft and energy levels in the single digits.
So, the honest truth? There are no good surf options in this 16-day window at all. Sometimes the ocean just switches off like this. It’s a blank run, but for this area, that’s not totally abnormal. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
