The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one to call. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for any decent waves around here. The charts are showing a real dry spell, and if you’re after proper surf, you’re going to be waiting a while.
Right now, the water at Agami is sitting at 82°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Feels nice, but it doesn’t help the lack of surf.
For the first chunk of the forecast, from Thursday the 16th of July right through until the end of the month, it’s a total write-off. The wind is almost always onshore from the northwest, and the swell is weak, short-period slop – mostly around 2 ft to 3 ft, with periods of 4 to 8 seconds, and the combined energy is mostly low (between 9 and 168). You’ll see a few days where the energy bumps up a bit, like the 24th of July with 130 in the morning and 168 in the afternoon, but it’s all wind-affected, poor quality junk. The wind is never right, and the swell direction is coming from the north or northwest, which isn’t what Agami (exposed to the north) needs to fire off. For a beginner spot that rarely breaks, this is a long, boring stretch.
There’s one tiny glimmer in the middle of all this. On the morning of Saturday the 25th of July, it goes glassy – zero wind – and there’s a little 2 ft north-northwest swell with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is only 63, so it’s weak, but it’s the only surfable window in the whole outlook. The conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary.” It’s not going to be anything special, but if you’re desperate for a paddle and a few knee-high rollers, that’s the moment. The crowds are sometimes a problem there, but on a day like that, I wouldn’t worry too much.
After that, it’s straight back to onshore, messy, and poor conditions. There’s a small bump in energy on the 31st of July with 193 in the morning, but the wind is cross-onshore and the swell is still short-period, so it’s not going to clean up.
To be honest, there is no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is that Saturday morning, the 25th of July, when it’s glassy. That’s your only real chance to get wet without fighting a washing machine. But for a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a pretty normal blank run. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be looking for a different hobby for a while.
Rusty.
