The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat, surfers. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts until my eyes went crossed. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s gonna test your patience. The good news is there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but we’ve got a long, flat stretch to get through first.
Right off the bat, for the rest of August and into the first week of September, it’s a write-off. I’m talking tiny, weak waves with no push. From the 23rd through the 31st, the swell is barely registering, mostly in the 1.5ft to 3ft range, with a period of 5-7 seconds. That’s just wind chop and leftovers. The energy readings are all weak, sitting between 4 and 100. It’s going to be a lake out there. We might see a few tiny bumps, but nothing that’s worth paddling out for, unless you just want to sit on your board and look at the horizon. The winds are mostly onshore, which is just the cherry on top of this flat cake.
Then we hit a dead zone from the 1st of September to the 5th. The swell actually drops out even further. We’re talking 0.5ft to 2ft junk, with the energy bottoming out at a measly 4. It’s properly flat. This is a solid gap of over a week with absolutely nothing on the cards. There’s no point lying to you; the wave count is going to be zero.
Now, hold on, because things get interesting as we move into the second weekend. Mark your calendars for the 6th and 7th of September. The swell finally shows up. On Saturday the 6th, we get a push from the NNW, with the swell building to around 5.5ft to 6.5ft. The period is still short, around 7-8 seconds, but the energy is way up there – we’re talking 282 to 581, which is strong. The problem? The wind turns onshore and howling. Sunday the 7th is still looking big, with 5ft of NNW swell, but that fresh onshore wind makes it a messy, blown-out mess. This is not classic surf. The combination of a building swell and strong onshore wind screams more of a kite-surfing or windsurfing day than anything we’d want to paddle into at Agami. It’s going to be powerful, but choppy and lumpy. You’d need a big board, a lot of strength, and a masochistic streak to enjoy it.
So, that’s the story. The only real “surf” we see is that raw, wind-blown pulse at the very end of the window. It’s got power, but no polish. For the true standouts, there are none. We go from nothing to a wind-affected bump. It’s that simple. Keep your board in the car for the daily check, but honestly, you’re not missing much until that distant swell lights up at the start of the second week. It’s promising because it’s something, but treat it with caution.
