The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at the next few weeks for Topsy, or Hilton Bet as some call it. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. The first week and a half are pretty much dead in the water. Kicking off from Monday, August 3rd, we’ve got tiny, weak swell with barely any energy (13 units) and a short period of 6 seconds. The wind is a mess, mostly cross-onshore, which is just chopping everything up. There’s a tiny window on Tuesday morning, August 4th, with glassy conditions, but the swell is only 2 ft from the NW and period is a paltry 5 seconds—just not enough to get excited about. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Things stay quiet all the way through to the end of the first week. The combined swell energy dribbles along, never getting past 48 units, and the winds keep swinging cross-onshore. It’s a real grind. Then, around Friday, August 14th, we start to see a bit of a pulse. The swell picks up to 3 ft from the WNW with an 8-second period, and the energy starts climbing into the moderate range (107 units). But the wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, and the surf is labeled as poor. It’s a tease, really.
The best chance we’ve got is on Saturday, August 15th, when the swell hits 4 ft to 4 ft from the WNW, with an 8-second period and energy up to 217 units. That’s the most power we’ll see, but it’s still a bit messy with onshore winds in the afternoon. The morning might have a cleaner look with a lighter breeze, but it’s still cross-onshore. For a beach and reef setup, that’s not ideal.
After that, it fades again into the second week, with smaller swell and more cross-onshore wind. Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The only glimmer is that Saturday, August 15th, but even then, it’s not firing. For a beginner break, it’s fine if you just want to get wet, but don’t expect any magic. If the wind was offshore, we’d be talking, but it’s not. No standout, no hidden gem. Just a flat, windy patch.
Rusty.
