The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a good hard look at Topsy, or Hilton Bet as some call it. I gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch with nothing really worth paddling out for.
The water is sitting at a warm 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s firing.
For the next week and a half, it’s grim. From Tuesday the 18th all the way through to Friday the 28th of August, the waves are tiny and weak, mostly under 3ft with no energy to speak of. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, never getting above three digits. Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, creating choppy, messy conditions. There are a few glassy mornings – like Saturday the 22nd, Monday the 24th, and Wednesday the 26th – but with such small, weak swell, it's flat as a pancake. Don't bother.
Now, on Friday the 28th of August, the afternoon sees a bump. The combined swell energy jumps to 102, which is moderate, and the swell height picks up to 3ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds. But it's still not enough. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, and the report calls it poor surf conditions.
The only real glimmer, and I mean the only one, comes on Saturday the 29th of August in the morning. We get a clean look with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, and the swell holds at 3ft from the WNW. It’s surfable, but the word is "very ordinary conditions". At this exposed beach and reef setup, it’s a small, weak wave for a beginner, not a standout by any stretch. The crowds are sometimes an issue, but honestly, on a day like this, you'll probably have the place to yourself.
The rest of the run through to the 2nd of September is more of the same: tiny, weak, and messy. There are no standouts here, folks. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe the Saturday morning session, but don’t get your hopes up.
