The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking over the charts for Topsy or Hilton Bet. This is a beach and reef setup, exposed to the SW, and the guide suggests it’s best with a good southwest swell. Right off the bat, the water’s sitting at about 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nice and tropical.
Honestly, the next week and a half looks pretty bleak. We've got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with onshore wind messing things up. There’s a big gap of poor to very ordinary conditions starting now and running right through until the morning of the 10th of September. Most mornings have either glassy or light wind, but the swell is just not there, staying under 2ft. The combined wave energy is weak, barely getting above 50 (53 on the 1st morning, 43 on the 6th). It’s small, weak, and not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a float.
The first real chance of anything with a bit of poke comes on the morning of Thursday, 10th September. Swell bumps up to 4ft out of the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 194, which is a solid step up. But here’s the catch – the wind is a light cross-onshore from the SW. It’s rideable, but it’ll be a bit bumpy. The 10th afternoon sees the energy at 207, but the wind swings onshore, making it choppy. It’s the biggest stuff in the window, but the quality is still poor.
After that, the swell drops back down and conditions stay below par. Friday the 11th morning has a touch more energy (146) with a cross-shore breeze, so it might be the cleanest of the bigger days, but it’s still just average. Honestly, this run doesn’t give us a proper standout. If you had to pick, the morning of the 10th has the most size (4ft WNW), but manage your expectations. For experts, there’s nothing too challenging, and for beginners, the swell on the 10th is fine, but the wind won’t be doing you any favours. It’s a bit of a nothing period. Keep an eye on the charts; this area tends not to stay this quiet for long.
Rusty.
