The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: there’s not a lot to get excited about. The first decent chance to paddle out doesn’t come until Tuesday morning, August 18th. Before that, it’s a write-off – Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th are a mess of onshore and cross-onshore winds with choppy, poor conditions. You’d be wasting your time.
So, when Tuesday morning finally rolls around, Topsy or Hilton Bet might just give you a window. The water’s sittin’ at 86°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’ll be pleasant sittin’ out there. Swell is small, around 3 ft out of the WNW with a short 7-second period, and the energy is weak (81). But – and this is a big but – we’ve got glassy conditions and a light southerly air. That means clean, smooth water, which will make those tiny waves rideable for a beginner. This is the best we’re going to see for a while, but it’s only a morning show. By Tuesday afternoon, the cross-onshore breeze fires up again and chops it all to bits.
After that, we hit a real dry spell. From Wednesday the 19th all the way through to Tuesday the 26th, it’s pretty grim. The swell drops even lower, periods get shorter, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore. There are a few mornings with light breezes, but the swell is just too small and weak to bother with. This is a long stretch of flat to poor conditions.
Late in the outlook, we get another tiny glimmer. On Thursday morning, August 27th, we’re lookin’ at surfable waves again – still small at 3 ft from the WNW, period up to 8 seconds (91 energy – moderate). The wind goes glassy out of the south again, so clean conditions are back. Might be worth a dawny if you’re desperate, but don’t expect any power. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th stay in that same range: small, weak, and mostly blown out by the afternoon.
Finally, on Monday morning, August 31st – that’s the last day of the month – we get another glassy window. Same story: 3 ft WNW swell with 8-second period and moderate energy (98). It’s clean, but ordinary.
Best on offer? Honestly, the only standouts are those two glassy mornings: Tuesday the 18th and Thursday the 27th, with Monday the 31st as a backup. If you’re a beginner or just want to get wet in clean, small waves, those are your moments. The trade-off is crowds – Topsy can get busy when it’s clean, so expect some company.
For the more experienced crew, there’s just no power or shape in the water. Keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
