The Lowdown
Listen up, crew. Rusty here, taking a look at our surf prospects. Let's be straight: it's a tough forecast. The only wave in town is Hilton, and it's barely waking up. We're looking at a long stretch of flatness, so don't get too excited.
Right from the start, from Friday, August 21st, right through to the morning of Saturday, August 29th, it's a desert. Tiny swell, messy wind, and the word is "poor surf conditions" across the board. You're not missing a thing.
Then, on the morning of Saturday, August 29th, we get a little pulse. Hilton shows a small swell, about 3 ft, coming from the WNW. The combined swell energy is a weak 74, so it's not packing any punch. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it's weak and wobbly. The wind is glassy though, which is a big deal. That light, offshore breeze means the surface will be smooth as a mirror. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." I'd call it a tiny, clean wave. The water temp is 86°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual – much warmer than normal for this time of year.
Sunday morning, August 30th, is more of the same. Another glassy morning at Hilton, with the swell dropping a little to 2 ft from the WNW. The energy is even weaker at 51. It's still ordinary, but it's the cleanest option you'll have.
After that, it's back to the flatness. Monday, August 31st, has a glassy morning, but the swell is only 2 ft. From Tuesday, September 1st, it's all "poor surf conditions" with tiny, weak swell and onshore winds again. The second week of the forecast looks just as grim.
So, the only real standout is the glassy morning on Saturday, August 29th, at Hilton. It's a reef/jetties setup, so it's not a beach break that'll close out. It's a beginner spot, and with this tiny swell, that's about right. It's "inconsistent," so you'll be waiting around. Crowds are listed as "often," so expect company for those clean but tiny waves. The optimum swell direction is WSW, and we're getting a WNW, which explains why it's so weak.
There you have it. A long wait for a small, clean window on that Saturday morning. Keep your expectations low, and you won't be disappointed.
Rusty.
