Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet outlook. The forecast is showing wave heights that are just too small to get excited about, and the energy is weak. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a flat spell.
We’re looking at Hilton (a reef/jetty setup) and it’s an inconsistent spot at the best of times. The swell is coming from the WNW, but the optimum direction for this place is WSW, so it’s not even lighting up the way it should. The combined energy figures are low, mostly under 100, meaning there’s just not much power in the water. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 82°.
The first few days, from Sunday the 5th of July through to Thursday the 9th, we’re seeing wave heights around 3 ft to 4 ft with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. The surf is rated poor for this entire period.
Friday the 10th of July morning actually looks glassy, which is a nice thought, but the swell is down to 2 ft with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 38. It’s clean but tiny. That afternoon the wind swings onshore again.
From Saturday the 11th of July all the way through to Monday the 20th of July, the wave height barely gets above 2 ft. The period drops to 5 or 6 seconds on some days, which is just windswell chop. The wind is often cross or onshore, though there are a few glassy mornings on the 12th, 19th, and 20th of July. Still, with combined energy figures in the teens or low 30s, it’s not worth paddling out for.
Because the swell is so small and the wind is often messy, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer over the next couple of weeks. There’s simply no standout, no good option to chase. It’s a blank run, and for a spot that’s already inconsistent, this kind of flat spell is pretty normal.
Rusty.
