The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, taking a look at the Zandvoort stretch for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s not looking great. We’ve got a bit of a dry spell on our hands.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, the first real chance to even think about getting wet isn’t until Thursday, July 18th. Before that, from now right through to the 17th, the surf is either tiny, messy, or blown out. It’s a tough start.
Let’s talk about that first little bump. On Saturday morning, July 18th, the wind is howling onshore from the NNW at 25 km/h, which is a real shame because we’ve got a solid 4 ft of swell rolling in from the same NNW direction. The combined swell energy is at a moderate 97, but that onshore wind is going to chop it all up. Conditions are listed as poor. The afternoon is similar with 4 ft and 147 energy, still with that onshore wind. Frustrating.
Sunday, July 19th, sees the swell build a touch more, hitting 4 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon from the NNW, with energy climbing to a strong 237 by the afternoon. But again, the wind gods aren't playing ball. We're looking at a strong breeze from the NW, 25-28 mph, straight onshore. This is more of a kitesurfer's dream than a paddler's. For the surfers, it's a washout.
We get a slight break in the wind on Monday, July 20th, with just a moderate breeze from the NW, but it’s still onshore. Swell drops back to 3 ft from the NNW, with lighter energy around 110. Still not a day to get excited about.
After that, from the 21st through to the 29th, the outlook is grim. Swell heights barely scrape 2 ft for most of it, and what little swell there is gets hammered by cross-onshore or onshore winds. There is one curious mention on Wednesday morning, July 29th, where we get a clean, cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 12 mph, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft from the NNW, with an energy of just 3. You can't surf that.
The water temp is a big story. On the morning of the 14th, it’s sitting at a balmy 69°F, which is a massive 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit during this flat spell.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The best on offer looks like a tough call between the late mornings of July 18th or July 19th, just because the swell is biggest. But with the onshore wind, it’s a messy, poor-quality option. The wait for a proper clean wave with any size just isn’t in this forecast.
Rusty.
