Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on.
Truth is, mate, the surf forecast for Zandvoort (North Holland) over the next 16 days is a rough one. The finder’s come up empty – no standout sessions, no green lights. We’ve got a long stretch of basically flat or junk waves with a few tiny pulses, but nothing that’s going to get you out of bed. The wind gods are not playing nice, and the swell is mostly short-period wind slop. The water is sitting at around 68°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – nearly 8°F above average – so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit for the paddle of shame.
Right from Monday 6 July, it’s a bust. Westerly winds are smashing the coast, 15–19 mph cross-on, with tiny 3–3 ft swell but with a period of only 4–5 seconds – that’s just wind chop. Combined energy is weak (32–61), and conditions are described as poor. Tuesday 7 July doesn’t get better: 3–4 ft swell but still messy with onshore or cross-on wind, and the water temp numbers are blank for those days – doesn’t matter, you wouldn’t want to be out there.
Wednesday 8 July and Thursday 9 July offer a glimmer of small change. Thursday morning actually sees glassy conditions with a tiny 2 ft of NNE swell – period 7 seconds, combined energy only 24 – but that’s about as clean as it gets, and it’s still rated poor. If you’re desperate, you could catch a knee-high wave, but honestly, it’s not worth the drive.
From Friday 10 July right through to Wednesday 15 July, the swell drops even further – 1.0 ft to 2 ft – with periods around 4–7 seconds. A few mornings have clean, cross-off winds from the east or northeast, but the energy is next to nothing (6–15). This is flat spell territory, mate. There’s a massive gap of almost no surf worth mentioning.
Thursday 16 July and Friday 17 July are basically dead – 0.7–1.0 ft with strong onshore winds, total energy down to 3–5. Just don’t bother.
Then we get a whisper of something on Saturday 18 July: a 3 ft WSW swell with a 6-second period, combined energy of 54, and light cross-on wind in the morning. Still poor, but the best of a bad bunch. Sunday 19 July goes back to rubbish: onshore gales swinging from NNW to NW at 19–22 mph, tiny waves.
Finally, on Monday 20 July, there’s a pulse: 5 ft NW swell with a 7-second period and combined energy of 189 – the biggest energy reading of the whole period. But the wind is cross-on from the WNW at 22 mph, making it lumpy and messy. That’s over a week away, so take it with a grain of salt, but it’s the only thing that even hints at a wave with a bit of push. After that, Tuesday 21 July is back to cross-on junk.
Bottom line: Zandvoort is looking at a blank run. There’s nothing good on offer. For an exposed sandbar break that’s inconsistent and often crowded, this kind of flat spell is unfortunately normal. The longer-range pulse on 20 July is a maybe, but with the wind as it is, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddler’s dream. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
