The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First up, the honest truth: this stretch of coast is in a bit of a flat spell to kick things off. The first week or so is pretty grim, with only tiny, weak pulses of swell and wind that’s mostly wrong for any decent shape. You’re looking at a gap of several days before anything even starts to show a glimmer of hope. The energy levels are low, often with combined energy under 100 – a measly 40 at best early on – and periods are short, all under 8 seconds. Basically, the beach is doing its best impersonation of a lake.
The one true standout in the whole 16-day window lands on the Monday morning of the 7th of September at Zandvoort. For that one morning, the stars briefly align. We’ve got a chest to head-high swell coming in at 6ft from the WNW. The swell period is a modest 7 seconds, so it’s a bit short-period and will be a little sectiony, but the real beauty is the wind. It’s predicted to be glassy – dead calm – which is an absolute gift. That means the surface will be clean as a whistle, even on a beach break. The combined energy is strong, sitting at 356. It won’t be for beginners though; 6ft with that kind of punch is for the crew who know what they’re doing. Because of those clean conditions, this window is the one to circle. No lie, that morning has the potential to fire.
After that, the pattern gets messy again. The Monday afternoon turns cross-on, and the following days see the swell drop fast and the wind shift back to being problematic. The Tuesday morning of the 8th has a clean-looking cross-off breeze, but the swell has already dropped to a knee-high 2ft with weak energy (71), so it’s a grovel session for the desperate.
So, to sum it up: save your energy for that Monday morning glass-off on the 7th of September. The rest of the period is a waiting game.
Rusty.
