Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the outlook for Zandvoort over the next 16 days. Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – there’s no swell worth paddling out for in the whole window. Every single session gets a score of zero for surf quality, and that’s because the conditions are consistently poor. The water temperature is sitting at 68° and that’s 8° warmer than average for this time of year, so it is very unusual – feels like a bathtub. Not that you’ll be in the water much for the waves.
The whole run kicks off on Saturday 4th July with a tiny 3ft swell from the west with a short period of 5 seconds, but it’s cross-on with a 19 mph W wind, so it’s lumpy trash. The combined swell energy is only 79 (weak), and that’s about as good as it gets all fortnight. Sunday 5th sees a bit of a bump to 4ft from the northwest and onshore wind, but again the period is short at 6 seconds and the energy sits at 95. It’s still poor and choppy. Through the rest of the first week, it’s the same story – tiny weak swells, cross-on winds, and messy conditions. By mid-week the swell drops right off to 1ft or less.
From Friday 11th July the wind turns offshore (E) and the surf gets clean, but the swell is a measly 1.0ft to 2ft from the north with almost no energy – the combined energy is as low as 7. That’s just not rideable for surfers. There is a day on Tuesday 14th July with glassy conditions and no wind, but there is zero swell – not even a reading. After that, into the second week, the swell stays tiny, 1.0ft to 2ft, and the winds mostly stay cross-on or cross-shore. The period is often short, under 6 seconds.
The very end of the window on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th July shows a slight lift – 3ft from the north on Friday afternoon, and 3ft from the north on Saturday morning, but both are accompanied by strong cross-on winds (12 to 19 mph) and the period is only 5 seconds. The energy is moderate at 50 and 37, but the wind will destroy any chance of a decent wave. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than something for a paddle surfer.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here – no best on offer, just flat or blown out the whole time. Zandvoort is an exposed sandbar, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times. This 16-day stretch is a real blank run, but for this area that’s not unusual. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s looking like a long dry spell. Keep the board in the van.
Rusty.
