The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I’ve gotta say it straight up: this is a grim run for Zandvoort (Netherlands). The entire 16-day window is basically a bust. There’s not a single standout session worth chasing, and the first decent-looking wave energy doesn’t even show up until Saturday, the 22nd of August, and even then, it’s a mess. Before that, Thursday afternoon and Friday are just tiny, weak, wind-chopped junk. You’ll be fighting a cross-shore wind and getting nothing back.

Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd see a bit of a pulse from the NNW, with swell heights around 3 ft to 4 ft, but a short, weak period of 6 to 8 seconds. The combined energy sits around 126 (moderate), but the wind is onshore from the NW, so it’s going to be a lumpy, bumpy affair. It’s surfable, but only just. Not exactly calling you out of bed.

After that, the swell drops right off into the following week. Monday the 24th through to the end of the run is a flat spell. The swell height barely touches 2 ft, and most days it’s down around 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft, with combined energy figures in the single digits or low double digits. There’s a glimpse of glassy conditions early Wednesday morning, September 2nd, with a 4 ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the energy is only 111 (moderate). The wave comment calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and that’s about the best you’ll see. Not worth holding your breath for.

The water temp on the 20th of August is 70°, which is a massive 6° warmer than average for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and it might feel a bit like a warm bath, but the surf quality just isn’t there to enjoy it.

If you’re a kitesurfer, those strong onshore winds on Saturday and Sunday could be interesting, but for paddle surfing, this is a blank stretch. The break is inconsistent, and this run of poor conditions is normal for the area. Sometimes it’s like this. Forecasts can change, but for now, there’s nothing to get excited about.

Rusty.
