The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty.
First up, I’m looking at the whole 16-day window for Zandvoort, and to be honest, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The waves are just not cooperating. There's a real gap at the start with nothing worthwhile, and the pattern doesn't really change much. The first few days are all tiny, weak, and messy. The water temp is a whopping 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly, feels like a bathtub.
The first sign of any real size comes on Saturday the 18th. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the NNW, but it's onshore wind from the NNW at 15 mph, making it a bit of a mess. The combined energy hits 103, which is moderate, but the onshore wind is the killer. It’s not clean. The afternoon sees similar size (4ft) but with a bit more energy (132), but still the same onshore wind. It’s not great.
Sunday the 19th is the most promising day of the whole period, but that’s a low bar. We’ve got a 4ft to 5ft NNW swell, with the combined energy climbing to 197 in the afternoon. That’s the strongest energy we see. The wind is cross-onshore at 15 mph, which is better than straight onshore, but it’s still choppy. For a sandbar break like Zandvoort, you need clean conditions, and this is just not it. The swell period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short, weak windswell, not a proper groundswell. It’s not going to be surfing well.
After Sunday, it drops off again. The 20th has a 3ft swell, but it’s back to onshore and weak. The rest of the week is a grind of tiny, onshore, weak surf. The 29th of July finally shows a shift, with a 3ft swell from the WSW and a clean cross-offshore wind from the ESE. That’s the cleanest wind we see in the whole forecast, but the swell is small and the period is short (6 seconds). The 30th has a glassy morning with a 1ft swell, but it's tiny.
Honestly, there’s nothing here worth paddling out for. The whole 16-day window is a write-off. The swell is too small, the wind is too often onshore or cross-onshore, and the periods are short. For a beach break like this, it’s just not doing anything. If you’re a kiter, the choppy, onshore days in the middle of the window might have some appeal, but for a surfer, it’s a hard pass. Sometimes the North Sea just goes flat, and this is one of those times. Don’t get your hopes up; forecasts can change, but this one looks bleak.
Rusty.
