The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real straight up – we’ve got a tough 16-day stretch ahead for Yellow Rock Reef. There’s no standout window, no clean swell, and the wind is a persistent problem. The whole period is a write-off for a proper surf, so I’m not going to dress it up. Let’s walk through it.
The dominant issue is the wind. From Sunday morning, July 19th, right through to the end, we’re looking at a relentless cross-onshore flow from the east, gusting up to 19 mph most afternoons. That’s going to keep the surface choppy and lumpy, ruining any potential the waves might have. The swell is short-period windswell – mostly 7 seconds or less – which just doesn’t have the grunt or the shape to overcome that wind. The combined energy sits in the moderate range for most of the first week, hitting around 206 (moderate) on Sunday afternoon, but it’s all wasted energy – poor surf conditions across the board.
We start with Sunday the 19th: swell height around 5 ft from the east, but with that 7-second period and a fresh cross-onshore wind, it’s a choppy, blown-out mess. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of that first week don’t improve. The swell drops a little, the wind stays on it, and the energy levels dip into the weak range by Wednesday morning (92). The water temperature is around 83°F, which is about average for the time of year, not that you’d want to be out there.
Thursday the 23rd brings a tiny bump in swell height to 5 ft on the afternoon, but the period is still a shocking 7 seconds and the wind is up to 19 mph. Energy climbs back to 193 (moderate), but it’s all cross-onshore and lumpy. Not worth a paddle.
The second week, from about July 25th onwards, is more of the same. The swell stays between 3 ft and 6 ft, but the wind never lets up. The period does extend to 8 seconds on a few days – like Sunday the 26th, where the energy hits 235 (moderate) – but it’s still cross-onshore and lumpy. That’s the story for the entire second week. The only change is a couple of days in late July and early August where the wind direction shifts to ENE, giving a brief “on” wind moment, but it’s still not clean or offshore, and the swell quality is poor.
By the time we get to Monday, August 3rd, the swell has dropped away to a tiny 1 ft from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a longer period, but the energy is weak (67), and the wind is still howling. It’s a total fade-out.
Honestly, mates, there’s nothing here. Not one session to recommend. The setup is all wrong – constant cross-onshore wind, short-period windswell, and a reef break that needs the right conditions. If you’re a kite surfer, this constant east wind might be your thing, but for a paddle surfer, this is a 16-day blank. It’s a tough run for the area, but it happens. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d put the boards away.
Rusty.
