The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it's a tough stretch ahead. We're looking at a long, flat spell. The only spot that pops up with anything at all is Yacht, and even that's a real struggle. The first bit of surf worth mentioning doesn't roll in until the 5th of August, and even then it's pretty ordinary. A light onshore breeze and a weak 2ft swell from the southeast with a period of 9 seconds means the combined energy is only 99 – that's weak, mate. It's surfable, but you wouldn't set your alarm for it.

From Wednesday afternoon, it's a ghost town. The swell drops right off, and we get a run of days with hardly a ripple. The next sniff of anything that's not a total zero doesn't come until the 19th of August, and that's a full 12 days of waiting. On the 19th, we get a bit of a pulse again, with a 2ft swell from the east, 8 seconds, and a light northwesterly offshore wind. The combined energy is a weak 52, so it's still tiny, but it's clean. The 20th of August shows a little more hope with a 2ft swell from the east, period 10 seconds, and the energy reading bumps up to 100, which is the top end of weak. Still, a southerly cross-shore wind won't do it any favours.

With the wind set to blow from the west and south-west for most of the week, and the swell size never getting above 4ft, the whole setup is pretty unappealing. There's no stand-out session here. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.

Don't hold your breath for a proper wave. It's a grim outlook, and the forecasts are likely to change, but as it stands, there's nothing to get excited about. The only potential is a glassy, clean morning on the 14th, but the swell is almost non-existent with a period of just 4 seconds.

Rusty.

Information about the Yacht Surf forecast

The above surf forecast table for Yacht provides essential information for determining whether the surfing conditions will be good over the next 16 days. A general guide to surfing at Yacht can be found by selecting the local surf guide option on the grey menu. Our Yacht surf forecast is unique since it includes wave energy (power) that defines the real feel of the surf rather than just the height or the period. If you surf the same spot (Yacht) regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone combined with our forecast of favourable offshore wind conditions. Our star ratings will help here and of course you will also find the usual wave height and period predictions on our surf forecasts as well as a full break down of the swell components under our advanced users option (to reveal that, click the little Einstein character under the tide times).

Further information to help with frequently asked questions about our surf forecast for Yacht may be found under the help tab on the top menu and also by moving your mouse over the question marks on the surf forecast table itself. Please always bear in mind that the forecast is for near-shore open water and local factors at each surf break influence the actual breaking wave height, such as the beach / reef profile, water depths offshore and shelter.
