The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Windmills. It’s a bit of a waiting game this time around, so don’t be in a rush.
The outlook for the next two and a half weeks is a long, frustrating stretch of onshore cross-shore winds chopping up the waves. We’re looking at a gap of nearly two weeks where conditions just aren’t going to deliver the goods for a proper session. The energy is weak to moderate early on, and the wind stays cross or cross-off from the ENE, making things bumpy and messy.
There is a real standout window right at the very end of the period, though. The morning of Friday, August 28 sees a jump in swell size to about 8ft from the ENE, with the period stretching out to 11 seconds. That’s a solid groundswell. The combined energy hits 1346 – that’s strong. This is serious surf, definitely in the expert-only territory. By the afternoon of the 28th, the wind drops to 12 mph and the swell holds at 8ft, but the period lengthens to 12 seconds and the combined energy jumps to 1630. That’s very strong. Because this is a reef break, that long-period groundswell (over 11 seconds) should wrap in and produce some proper, powerful lines. It’s a promising call for the experienced crew, but being two weeks out, take it with a grain of salt. The wind is still cross-shore, which is a bummer, so it won’t look as clean as glass, but it’s the only real pulse in the whole run.
For the rest of the month and into the start of September, don't bother paddling out. Swell stays small or swings into a strong but messy cross-chop, especially the morning of Monday, September 1, when the wind is blowing 19 mph from the NE. That setup with 7ft of swell from the ENE and a short period of 6 seconds looks more like something for the kite surfers than a paddle session. Crowds are likely at Windmills anyway, but honestly, no one will be missing much during that middle stretch.
Signing off,
Rusty.
