Table - best surf conditions forecast for Windmills over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this next stretch is a tough one. We’ve got a solid 16-day window here, but honestly, there’s not a single recommendation that’s worth paddling out for. The whole thing is a bit of a write-off, I’m afraid.
The first day with any surf on offer is Thursday, July 9th, but it’s all downhill from the start. The swell at Windmills just doesn’t line up with the trade wind, and we’re stuck with a cross-shore breeze that’s creating lumpy, messy conditions. The wave energy is moderate (433) on the 9th, with a 7ft swell from the ENE, but that 7-second period means it’s weak and crumbly, not to mention the 19 mph wind making it a chop fest. It’s not doing anyone any favours.
This same pattern just keeps repeating. Morning or afternoon, it’s the same story: cross-shore wind, poor surf, and a score that’s a flat zero. The swell sticks around the 5ft to 7ft mark with that short, weak period, and the wind stays stubbornly from the ENE at 16 to 19 mph. Even on Sunday, July 12th, when it briefly cleans up a bit, the swell is still short-period and the wind is cross-off, so it’s not exactly a gem.
The water temperature is sitting at 79°F, which is about average for the time of year – nothing unusual there. But the break itself, Windmills, is a reef setup that’s fairly exposed and fairly consistent, but the swell direction is all wrong. It needs a clean offshore from the SSE to really work, and we’re getting the opposite. The crowds are often a problem here, but honestly, with conditions this poor, I reckon you’ll have the place to yourself, and that’s not a good thing.
There’s a gap of several days here with no real options. The swell slowly fades out towards the end of the second week, dropping to a 4ft to 5ft range with energy falling into the weak territory (82 to 106). Short period, cross-shore wind, poor surf – it’s just a blank run. For this area, that’s a bit more normal than you’d hope, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Bottom line: there’s nothing to chase here. If you’re desperate, you could maybe look at the cleanest window on Sunday morning, July 12th, but it’s a long shot. The wind is too strong and the swell is too short for that reef to shape up. I’d say wait for the next change. Forecasts can turn, but this one’s a dud for now.
