The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Windmills is a total write-off. I’ve looked through every day from July 16 through to July 31 and there’s not a single recommendation worth paddling out for. The finder’s telling me it’s all “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero, and that’s the truth.
Windmills is a reef break for advanced surfers, fairly consistent and fairly exposed, with an optimum swell from the NNW. But the wind is the killer here – it’s coming cross-shore from the ENE almost the entire forecast, blowing at 12 to 19 mph (20-30 km/h). That’s a moderate to fresh breeze kicking up lumpy cross-chop. The swell sizes float between 2 ft and 6 ft (0.5-1.7m), with periods mostly short (5-8 seconds) meaning weak, choppy waves. Even when the energy picks up – like on the 28th and 29th July when combined energy jumps to 615 and 644 (moderate to strong) and the period stretches to 13 and 11 seconds – that longer-period groundswell might have some push, but the wind still spoils it. That cross-shore mess means the wave face stays bumpy and ugly. For a reef that needs clean conditions, it’s just not happening.
The whole 16 days are a blank run. Nothing stands out. No morning glass-offs, no offshore windows. Even the few times the swell gets over 5 ft (like 6 ft on the 25th and 26th) it’s still accompanied by that cross wind, so it’s not even worth thinking about for advanced crew. If you’re a kite surfer, that constant cross-breeze might be your thing, but for paddle surfing – forget it.
Look, Windmills is a fairly consistent spot, so it’s a bit unusual to see such a long dry spell. Forecasts can change. But right now, you’d be better off staying home and waxing your board for another day.
