The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking at the next couple weeks for Windmills. Straight up, it's a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is a grind, with hardly a minute of good clean surf.
We start on Saturday the 22nd of August with nothing going on. The wind is howling out of the ENE at 22 mph, just tearing across the swell. The wave energy is moderate at best (214), and the 4.6 ft to 5.6 ft of swell is all short-period, messy windswell. It looks more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session if you ask me.
That same pattern of fresh cross-shore wind and lumpy chop sticks around for days. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are more of the same. There's a brief flicker on the morning of Monday the 24th with a 1.3 ft swell from the NW, but with a period of 11 seconds it's a touch of groundswell, but it's tiny and cross-wind. Not worth paddling out for.
The first week of September, from the 1st to the 5th, we finally see the wind ease up a little to a moderate breeze, but the direction is still rubbish – mostly cross or cross-onshore. The swell stays small to moderate, around 4.6 ft to 5.9 ft, but the period is low, rarely getting above 8 seconds, so the waves will be weak and crumbly. The wave energy gets a bit more punchy, hitting 439 on the 1st of September, but the conditions are still poor.
The only real stand-out in the whole forecast is Sunday the 6th of September. By the morning, a solid 8.2 ft swell pushes in from the ENE, with a long 13-second period. The wave energy jumps way up to 2257, so there's some serious power behind it. This is expert territory for sure. The problem? The wind is still cross-shore at 16 mph. It's going to be a lumpy, bumpy, powerful mess. It's the best of a bad bunch, but it's not clean. The water temp is sitting at a pretty average 80.1° for this time of year.
Honestly, for most of this month, you're better off finding something else to do. It's a blank run, and that's just how it goes here sometimes.
