The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let me put it plain: Windmills is looking like a long, frustrating stretch with nothing but cross-shore winds and messy, short-period swell. There’s no good surf on offer for the next couple of weeks. The first few days are a total loss, with small waves and chop. The water temp is about 79°F, which is normal for this time of year.
From Friday the 17th through to Monday the 27th, it’s a constant battle with ENE cross-shore winds at 12-22 mph. Swell heights are pitiful, from 2 ft to 7 ft, with periods as low as 5 to 8 seconds – just windswell slop. The combined energy values range from 212 to 530 (moderate to very strong), but the cross-shore wind ruins everything. On Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, the swell jumps to 7 ft with energy over 500 (very strong), but with 7-8 second periods and cross-shore wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, blown-out mess, more suitable for kites than surfboards. This is an advanced reef break, and you’ll need to be on your game.
Then, a faint flicker. On Wednesday the 29th of July afternoon, the swell picks up a bit of period – 12 seconds – with energy at 446 (strong). Thursday the 30th holds 11-second period with 1.1m (4 ft) swell and energy in the 320-340 range (strong). The wind is still cross-shore from the ENE at 12 mph, so it’s not clean, but longer-period swell can offer better shape and more punch. Friday the 31st keeps the period at 10 seconds with 0.9m (3 ft) swell and energy around 200-240 (moderate). On Saturday the 1st of August, there’s a 13-second period swell from the west at 0.5m (2 ft) with energy 242 (moderate). Again, cross-shore wind. The optimum swell direction for this break is NW, so the ENE swell isn’t ideal, but the longer periods might make it work a bit. Crowds are often here, so expect company. This is a long-range hint, so less reliable.
In short, it’s a hard slog with one small, uncertain window at the very end. Everything else is poor. The conditions are better for kite surfing than a relaxed paddle. That’s the call.
Rusty.
