The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Windmills is lookin' like a real heartbreaker. We’re staring down a long, flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for. The forecast starts on Tuesday the 18th of August and the conditions are just plain ugly. Cross-shore winds and weak, short-period windswell are all we’ve got, with the combined energy barely registering (165). That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine.
This poor run of form carries on through the rest of the week. Wednesday the 19th is even smaller, with swell dropping to 3 ft and energy at a pathetic 60. Thursday is a write-off with tiny 2 ft waves and cross-onshore breezes messing things up. Friday the 21st morning looks like a whisper at 2 ft, but by the arvo, the swell actually bumps up to 5 ft – sounds promising, right? Wrong. Combined energy climbs to 158, but the period is a snappy 6 seconds and the wind is still a messy cross-shore. Still poor.
The wind really cranks up over the weekend. Saturday the 22nd has fresh cross-shore winds at 35 km/h, and while there’s a little 4 ft swell, the energy (156) isn't backed by any quality. Sunday is more of the same. By Monday the 24th, we finally see some cleaner conditions with a cross-offshore breeze, and the swell pushes to 6 ft in the morning and 7 ft in the afternoon, with combined energy jumping to 289 and then 427. That’s moderate, but for a reef break like Windmills, a 7 ft ENE windswell with a 7-second period and a stiff 35 km/h cross-offshore is gonna be raw, bumpy, and pretty much an expert-only, onshore struggle. Not something I’d get excited over.
From Tuesday the 25th onwards, it’s a relentless grind. Strong breezes from the ENE keep the cross-shore chop nasty, with swell sitting around 5 ft to 6 ft and periods stuck between 6 and 8 seconds. The combined energy stays in the moderate range (up to 361), but without clean wind or proper swell direction, it’s all just messy. The water temperature anomaly is about average for the time of year, so you can't blame the cold for the lack of action. Honestly, the whole setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session.
There’s a glimmer toward the very end of the window – Sunday the 30th of August and Monday the 31st – where the period stretches to 10 seconds, with combined energy hitting 346 on Sunday arvo and swell at 4 ft ENE. But the wind is still cross-shore at 25 km/h, and it's still classed as poor surf conditions. Too far out and too unreliable to call a standout. Even the very last entry on Wednesday the 2nd of September shows a 1.0 ft WNW swell with a 14-second period, which would be clean and lined-up at the right spot, but it’s tiny. The long period is a tease. For the next sixteen days, there are no good surf options here. A blank run like this is just part of the deal for this area sometimes. Hang in there.
Rusty out.
