Right, I’m just gonna give it to you straight – the next two weeks at Windmills are a total bust. I’ve checked every session, every window, and there’s nothing worth a paddle. The whole stretch is hammered by a relentless cross-shore wind from the ENE, kicking up a lumpy cross-chop that’ll trash any clean wave. The swell’s coming from the NE or ENE, mostly short-period, weak junk that bounces off the reef with no power. You’ll be fighting a mess for the full two weeks.
We start Friday July 3rd with 5ft of NE swell, but that 25 km/h cross-wind and the combined energy at 221 (weak, mate) just makes for poor conditions – not a single score. This same pattern holds all the way through July 12th: swell hanging between 4ft and 6ft, but the wind never lets up. It’s always cross, always choppy. The energy stays in the weak to moderate range (199 to 376), but without any offshore wind or clean period, it’s a total no-go.
Now, there *is* a tiny shift from July 13th to the 15th. We get a couple of pulses from the WNW with a long period of 15 to 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and the combined energy edges up to 345 at one point, which is moderate. But the swell height is tiny – only 1ft to 2ft – and the wind is still cross. That’s not surf, that’s a bumpy lake. The period is super long for such a small wave, so at a reef like Windmills, it’ll just stand up and fold without any push.
After that, we’re back to the same old ENE junk from July 16th to the 18th. The swell comes up a bit on the 16th afternoon to 6ft (370 energy), but again, the cross-wind makes it a lumpy closeout generator.
So, here’s the bottom line: there is no standout, no best day, no hidden gem. It’s sixteen days of “leave the board in the car.” Windmills is a reef that needs clean conditions and a decent swell direction to work, and it’s getting neither. The water temp is sitting at a warm 79°F, which is about normal for the time of year, but that’s the only nice thing I can say.
For the area, a blank run like this is pretty normal when the trades lock in and the swell direction is off. Forecasts can change, but right now, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Save the wax for another week.
