The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Windmills is looking like for the next couple of weeks.
I’ll be honest with you – this is a rough run. Over the full 16 days, there isn’t a single moment where it all comes together for a quality surf. The whole stretch is basically a bust for a decent paddle session.
Starting from Saturday, July 18th, it’s all cross-shore wind and lumpy, choppy conditions. Swell is around 6 ft from the ENE, but with a short period of 8 seconds and a fresh breeze, the combined energy is moderate (344). It’s just messy and unfun. That pattern repeats day after day – moderate to fresh breezes from the ENE, cross-shore, with a cross-chop. Swell sizes bounce between 3 ft and 6 ft, but the period is short, and the wind never lets up. This carries on through the entire first week.
We get a slight break on the morning of Thursday, July 23rd, when the wind goes cross-offshore and it cleans up, but the swell is still only 5 ft with a weak 6-second period. It’s clean but there’s no power or shape. It quickly goes back to the same lumpy cross-shore mess afterward.
Into the second week, still no change. By July 29th, we see a long-period groundswell of 12 seconds hitting with only 3 ft from the ENE. That long period is going to make it break too straight for a beach and reef spot like Windmills, and with the cross-shore wind, it won’t be the dream session you’d hope for. Water temp is about 80°F, with a anomaly of about half a degree warmer, so pretty average for this time of year. Crowds are often here, but with conditions this poor, I wouldn’t stress about it.
The last few days of the forecast stay the same – fresh breezes and short-period, weak swells. There’s no standout window at all. The only real takeaway is that with that persistent cross-shore wind and moderate swell energy, this setup is far more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing.
Truth is, there’s no good surf to get excited about in the next 16 days. Hang tight – forecasts can always turn around.
Rusty.
