The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest with you right off the bat: the next sixteen days are looking pretty grim for Windmills. This is a long stretch of nothing special, and I mean *nothing*. For the first week and a half, starting Monday the 13th of July, it’s just a flat, choppy mess. We’ve got a solid week of onshore winds and cross-chop, with waves that are more frustration than fun. The data shows "poor surf conditions" every single day, with combined swell energy mostly in the 200s to low 300s—moderate energy, sure, but it’s all junk. That ENE wind just won’t quit, and it’s ruining everything.
The water temperature is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year, so that’s one small mercy.
Now, there’s a flicker of hope right at the very end. On the morning of Monday the 27th of July, something interesting happens. We get a glassy morning with the wind swinging light from the SE at just 3 mph. That’s a huge positive. The swell is 5 ft from the NE, with a period of 8 seconds, and combined energy of 357 (357). It’s not a monster, but it’s clean, and for a break that’s usually getting hammered, that’s a standout. The swell direction is NE, which is a good match for Windmills needing NNW—it’s in the ballpark. This is the only real window where you’d want to paddle out. After that, Tuesday the 28th of July brings a long-period groundswell (13 seconds) with a massive 5 ft from the ENE and ridiculous energy of 1015 (1015), but it’s crossed up with 12 mph winds, so it’s messy and only for the experts who want to fight the chop.
The whole period is a tough slog. The wave energy is moderate to strong, but it’s all locked in with cross-shore or cross-off conditions. For a reef break like Windmills, that’s a recipe for a bad time. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup might actually be interesting, because there’s plenty of wind and consistent swell, but for a paddle surfer? There’s only one day that’s worth getting out of bed for, and that’s Monday the 27th. Keep an eye on the long-range bit—it’s promising but less certain.
Rusty, signing off.
