Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you. It’s Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Waihee, and honestly, it’s a bit of a rough stretch ahead. There’s a whole lot of nothing good on the menu for the next 16 days, so don’t be in a rush to paddle out. That wind is just not playing ball.
Right from Sunday the 5th of July, the trade winds are cranking out of the ENE at 15-19 mph, and it’s all cross-on. That means chop, bump, and generally poor surf conditions all the way through. The swell is hanging around the 4 ft to 6 ft mark, but with that sloppy direction and short period (mostly 7-8 seconds), there’s no real power or shape. The wave energy is moderate at best, but it's useless with the wind.
Waihee itself is a reef and point setup, and it’s usually fairly consistent. It’s also exposed to the NNE, which is the optimum direction, but the swell we’re getting is ENE or E – not quite feeding it right. The crowds are only *sometimes* an issue, but honestly, with conditions like these, the crowds won’t be the problem. The problem is the onshore slop.
If the swell was a bit bigger and the wind glassy or offshore, this spot could fire, but that’s not what we’re seeing. The water temp anomaly is about average for this time of year, so no weird warmth or chill to spice things up.
Let me walk you through it: from the 5th of July right through to the 20th of July, it’s the same story day after day. Morning and afternoon, clear skies or a few clouds, but always that cross-on trade wind. The waves stay poor – every single entry says “poor surf conditions” and the scores are all zeros. There’s no standout day, no hidden gem. Just a long, flat-line of mediocrity.
Even by the 17th and 18th of July, the wind eases slightly to 9-12 mph, but it’s still cross-on and the swell is weak and short period. It’s just not worth getting wet for a paddle and a push.
So, what’s the bottom line? There are no good surf options in this 16-day window for Waihee. None. Zero. Zilch. The guidance shows a solid spot with good potential, but the forecast just isn’t delivering. It’s a blank run, but that’s not unusual for this kind of persistent trade wind pattern. It’ll swing back around eventually – it always does. But for now, leave the board in the car and go do something else.
Rusty.
