The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Waihee. I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a write-off for quality surfing. We’re stuck in a long, stubborn run of poor conditions. The trade winds are hammering the coast from the ENE, keeping things cross-on and choppy from the 23rd of August straight through the first week of September. The swell is around, bouncing between 4 ft and 7 ft, but it’s short-period windswell, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, with combined energy readings in the moderate range (284 to 912). It’s just messy, lumpy, and not worth paddling out for. This is a real test of patience.
We finally see a change coming around the 5th of September. That Saturday morning, a big groundswell fills in from the ENE, with a solid 7 ft and a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1847. But here’s the kicker – the wind is still a cross-on 16 mph, so the face is still going to be chopped up. The report says "poor surf conditions" for that day, so don’t get too excited yet.
The real window of opportunity, the one standout in this whole 16-day outlook, is on the 7th of September, Monday. By the morning, the swell is holding at 8 ft from the ENE with a 12-second period, and the energy is pumping at 1828. The wind finally looks promising – a light 3 mph from the NNW. That’s nearly glassy, and for a reef and point setup like Waihee, that means clean, lined-up waves. This is not for beginners; 8 ft is expert territory. The crowd factor is "sometimes" at Waihee, so you might have a few others out, but with that quality, it’s worth it. The afternoon kicks up to 10 ft with a light easterly cross-shore, still manageable. This is the one to circle. It’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but right now, that Monday morning is the best we’ve got.
Water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is about average for this time of year with a tiny anomaly of just 0.4°.
So, hang tight through the drudgery of the first week. The 7th of September is our shot.
Rusty.
