The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Waihee.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions from Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to the end of the month. The wind is a real problem, sitting cross-on from the ENE most of the time, and it’s just mangling the surface. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy readings mostly under 500 (moderate energy at best), and the period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds – that’s windswell junk, not groundswell. There’s nothing to get excited about, and the scores reflect that. It’s a long, flat, choppy run.
Now, we finally see a glimmer of hope as we head into September. The first standout is Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. The swell picks up to a solid 7 ft from the ENE, which is a decent size – a bit much for the groms, but good for the experienced crew. The period stretches to 9 seconds, so there’s a bit more push. The big news is the wind: it swings around to a light offshore from the NNE at just 6 mph. That’s going to clean things up nicely. The combined energy jumps to 664 (moderate to strong), so there’s some real power in the water. The morning session looks like the one to aim for, with the chance of a clean, lined-up wave.
The second standout is Friday afternoon, the 4th of September. The swell drops back a touch to 5 ft from the ENE, but the period holds at 9 seconds. The wind goes glassy – dead flat from the NW. That’s about as good as it gets for surface conditions. The combined energy is still solid at 358 (moderate). This is a proper glass-off session, perfect for a longboard or a fish. The waves will be clean and smooth, even if the size is a little smaller.
So, to sum it up: the first 12 days are a bust. Don’t bother. The two true standouts are Thursday morning, the 3rd of September, and Friday afternoon, the 4th of September. The Thursday morning has the bigger swell and the offshore wind, so it’s got the power. The Friday afternoon has the glassy conditions, which is a treat for the soul. The water temp is sitting at a warm 80°F, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
Stay patient, and mark those days on the calendar. It’s a long wait, but it might just be worth it.
Rusty.
