Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waihee over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Waihee over this whole stretch doesn’t have much to get excited about. There’s not a single standout session in the next 16 days. The combo of a persistent cross-onshore wind and short-period, messy swell means it’s going to be a long wait for a decent wave.
The pattern sets in right from Friday, 10 July. We’re looking at waves around 5 ft to 6 ft all day with a short period of just 7 seconds – that’s weak, bumpy energy. The ENE winds are a constant 16 mph, cross-onshore, and choppy. Not the kind of day you paddle out for.
That same story carries through Saturday, 11 July, and Sunday, 12 July. The height bumps up to 6 ft on Sunday, and the period stretches to 8 seconds, with the wave energy climbing – it’s moderate energy on paper – but the wind hasn’t let up. Still cross-onshore at 16 mph chopping it all up. It’s a washing machine out there, not a surfable wave.
Monday 13 July and Tuesday 14 July see the swell drop back a little, 6 ft down to 5 ft, the period stuck at 7 to 8 seconds, and the wind stays ENE 12 mph – cross-onshore and choppy. Poor conditions all around.
Wednesday 15 July through to Saturday 25 July – it’s more of the same. Swell sizes bounce between 3 ft and 5 ft, periods mostly 6 to 8 seconds, and the wind is relentless from the ENE or E, always cross-onshore at 12 to 19 mph. The wave energy values are mostly in the weak to moderate range – nothing that’s going to produce a clean, well-shaped wave. There’s a brief moment on Thursday 23 July where we see a 2 ft swell with a longer 12-second period, but the wind is still cross-onshore and the height is tiny.
There is a gap of several days with absolutely no recommendations here – the whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality surf. Waihee is a reef and point setup, normally fairly consistent, and it’s exposed to the swell, but with that constant ENE cross-onshore wind and short-period slop, it’s just not happening.
If you’re desperate, the best of a bad bunch might be Sunday 12 July with that 6 ft at 8 seconds and moderate energy, but even then, that 16 mph cross-onshore wind kills any potential. Don’t set your hopes on it.
The water temperature anomaly isn’t mentioned here so I can’t tell you if it’s warmer or cooler than usual for the time of year.
With this much wind and short-period chop, and Waihee being a reef and point, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Stay tuned – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
