The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Waihee.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the first week is a total write-off. We’re looking at a solid 7-day stretch of poor surf conditions from Sunday the 19th right through to the end of the week. The wind is a stubborn cross-onshore breeze whipping in from the ENE at 12 to 19 mph, and that’s just chopping everything up. Swell sizes are hanging around the 4ft to 6ft mark, but it’s a short, weak period of 7 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak to moderate, sitting in the low-to-mid hundreds (247 to 413). Not a single session worth paddling out for. The conditions are just ugly.
We do get a bit of a change on Sunday the 26th. The swell picks up some serious period, jumping to 16-17 seconds, and the height stays around 4ft to 5ft. That combined energy is now strong – we’re talking 1127 to 1305. That’s a real groundswell. But here’s the kicker: the wind is still cross-on from the ENE, keeping it messy. The forecast calls it marginal, and with that long period, it’s going to be a bit straight for a beach break setup. Not a true standout, but it’s the first sign of life. This long-period groundswell is best suited for a point or reef, and Waihee is a reef and point, so there’s a chance.
The following Monday the 27th holds onto that long-period energy, with 14-second intervals and 5ft swell. The energy is still strong (1047). But again, the wind is cross-on, and it’s just not clean. By Monday afternoon, the score drops to zero again.
After that, the swell slowly fades through the end of July and into August. The periods drop back to the 9-15 second range, and the heights shrink to 2ft to 3ft. The energy is moderate (273 to 644). The wind remains a persistent cross-on, keeping the surface lumpy. There’s a glimmer on Thursday the 30th afternoon where the wind turns onshore, but the forecast is still poor.
In all honesty, there’s not a single day in this 16-day window that screams “go time.” The first week is a total loss, and the second week has some bigger, longer-period energy, but the wind just won’t cooperate. The best you can hope for is a session on Sunday the 26th or Monday the 27th if you’re desperate, but be prepared for chop. For beginners, the swell never gets over 5ft, so it’s manageable size-wise, but the wind is the real enemy here. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Stick a pin in it, and check back in a few days. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
