The Lowdown
Howdy, Rusty here again, same story but in feet and Fahrenheit. This one’s a test of patience, folks. Waihee’s got a long, frustrating stretch of blown-out conditions before a tiny clean-up window shows up.
Right now and for days, the wind is your enemy. From Friday the 21st of August through the end of the month, it’s a constant cross-onshore breeze out of the east-northeast, mostly blowing 15 mph or stronger. Swell comes in from about 2ft up to 7ft, but it’s all chopped to bits. The combined wave energy climbs from a weak 108 up to a strong 991, but with that wind, no one’s having fun. Even a long-period 16-second groundswell on Friday the 28th (energy 513) gets torn apart. Every session for the first week is marked “poor surf conditions,” so don’t even bother. With the size and steady breeze, this setup is way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally get a break on Wednesday morning the 2nd of September. Wind drops to a light cross-shore from the northwest at 6 mph, swell settles to 4ft from the northeast with a 9-second period. The energy is a moderate 333. It’s still only “marginal,” but the surface is less messed up.
The one true standout? Thursday morning the 3rd of September. The wind goes almost dead calm—3 mph from the northeast—and the ocean turns glassy. Swell is small, about 3ft from the east-northeast at 8 seconds, with a combined energy of just 143. It’s weak, but it’s clean. That’s your only window for genuinely smooth, rideable waves in the whole outlook. Water temp sits at 80°, right on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that, it’s back to onshore junk into the first week of September, with a 15-second swell on Saturday the 5th (energy 320) but ruined again by cross-onshore winds. It’s a long wait for a very short moment of clean small waves. Rusty out.
