The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a rough stretch to start with. For the first week and a half, we’ve got a persistent cross-onshore wind out of the east-northeast blowing in the 12 to 15 mph range, and that’s making a mess of things. The surf size is there, with swell around 3.6 to 5.9 feet from the ENE, but it’s just choppy and poor. The wave energy isn't great either, sitting in the moderate range (between 144 and 555 on the energy scale). You’re not going to want to paddle out in that.
We have to wait until Monday July 27th before things start to look interesting, and even then it’s marginal. By the morning of the 27th, the swell picks up a bit, hitting 5.9 feet from the east with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell – it’ll have some serious push to it. The combined energy jumps up to strong levels (2188). The wind backs off to a gentle 9 mph from the northeast, but it remains cross-onshore. It's still not clean, but it's a step in the right direction.
The real standout window, if you can hold on, looks like Tuesday July 28th through to Thursday July 30th. The swell holds steady around 4.9 to 6.6 feet from the east, with that long period hanging in there (12 to 14 seconds). The wind stays light and gentle from the northeast, around 9 mph. The wave energy is very strong, with readings well over 1500 at times.
Even with the cross-onshore wind, the light breezes will keep it just on the rideable side for a lot of the day at Waihee (Maui). This spot is a reef and point break, which is actually a good thing for these long-period groundswells – it'll wrap in and shape up much better than a beach break would. The water temperature is sitting at a very pleasant 79.2°, which is right on average for this time of year. Keep in mind, it can get busy here sometimes, but for this quality of swell and light winds, it’ll be worth sharing the water.
The second week stays promising but is less certain. The last day of July and into August, the swell drops back and the onshore breeze strengthens again, so make the most of those days around the 28th through 30th if you can.
