Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waihee over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a honest look at what we’ve got on the menu. Right off the bat, I gotta tell ya, it’s a tough stretch ahead for Waihee. We’re looking at a solid 16-day run, but the first few weeks are a real grind.
Overall, the pattern is stubborn. That persistent ENE wind is blowing straight across the waves all day, every day, keeping things messy and chopped up. There’s wave energy out there, but the quality is just not there for a clean paddle session. The best bet, and I mean the only real standout, is a long-range flicker on July 20th.
Let’s break it down. From Sunday the 12th through Thursday the 15th, we’ve got moderate to strong cross-onshore winds and swell heights moving from about 6 ft down to 3 ft. The combined energy is moderate, but it’s all poor surf conditions. Not worth the paddle. This stretch is a write-off.
From Friday the 16th through the end of the first week, into the 19th, it’s more of the same. Cross-onshore winds stick around, swell bounces between 3 ft and 5 ft. The period is short, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, which is weak, wind-driven chop. Crowds at Waihee can be an issue sometimes, but honestly, with conditions like this, it’ll be quiet because no one wants to surf it.
Now, here’s the one glimmer. On Monday, July 20th, we see a shift. The swell drops to just 2 ft to 3 ft from the east, but the period jumps to a very long 15 seconds. That’s pure groundswell energy, and while the combined energy is still moderate, that long period means shape. The problem? The wind is still a moderate cross-onshore at 12 mph. It’s not perfect, but the wave quality will be miles better than anything else in the window. This is a promising but less certain long-range standout. For this break, which is a reef and point setup, that long period and east direction is actually a good match, as it won’t just close out. It won’t be big, but it might be fun. If you’re an intermediate, this is your morning.
After that, from July 21st onwards, we slide back into poor conditions with cross-onshore winds, short period swell, and moderate energy readings. July 26th shows a little bump up to about 5 ft, but with a 7-second period and that same dirty wind, it’s just going to be messy again.
So, there it is. A long, rough patch of choppy, onshore slop, with one interesting date on July 20th that might give us a few clean lines. The rest is best left to the kite surfers. Keep an eye on that 20th.
Rusty.
