Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waihee over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Waihee over the next 16 days is a proper struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry patch of average to poor conditions, with the first real glimmer of something better not showing up until way down the track.
Right now, and for the bulk of the next two weeks, we’ve got a persistent ENE breeze blowing cross-on, chopping everything up. Swell sizes hang around 3ft to 5ft, but the period is short – mostly 6 to 8 seconds – so it’s weak, disorganised stuff. The combined energy is low, sitting between 125 and 339 (weak to moderate), and every session is tagged “poor surf conditions.” Honestly, it’s a bit of a grind. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real standout – and I mean the only one worth getting excited about – shows up on Saturday the 25th of July. That afternoon, we see the swell bump up to 6ft from the NE, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps to 548 (moderate), and the wave comment lifts to “marginal.” It’s still cross-on with a gentle breeze, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but for this stretch, that’s the best you’re gonna get. It’s a reef and point set-up, so it can handle a bit of chop better than a beach break. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect a few locals out. This one’s for intermediate surfers – 6ft is getting a bit much for beginners.
Then, from Sunday the 26th into the following week, the period jumps to 14-15 seconds, with swell holding around 3ft to 5ft from the E. The energy cranks up into the 600s and 700s (strong), but it’s still cross-on and choppy, so the quality is poor. That long period groundswell would be amazing at a point or reef, but the wind just ruins it. It’s a real shame – the ingredients are there, but the wind is a bastard.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. The only real window is Saturday the 25th of July afternoon, and even that’s marginal. If you’ve got a kite, the consistent cross-on wind and moderate swell might be more your thing. For a paddle surfer, this is a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a lean run.
Rusty.
