Alright, I’ve had a look at what’s coming up for Waihee. I’m just going to tell you straight – this is a rough stretch. The whole 16-day forecast is pretty much a bust. There’s not a single standout day, no secret window to get excited about. The wind is relentless, blowing from the east-northeast and east, right across the break, and that’s going to keep the ocean choppy and messy the whole time. It’s a real bummer.
The water temp is sitting around 79°, which is basically normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re getting frustrated.
From Saturday the 11th right through the next week, it’s just poor. The swell is there, but it’s short-period, wind-blown junk. The wave energy is moderate, with readings around 271 and 372, but it’s all coming from the wrong direction and the wind is just ruining any chance of a clean wave. The waves are mostly 5 to 6 feet, but with that cross-on chop, it’s just a battle.
There’s a change around the 20th and 21st of July. The wave height drops right down to 2 feet, but the period jumps way up to 15 and 18 seconds. That’s real groundswell energy – the combined energy spikes to 563 and 624, which is actually strong. But here’s the problem: it’s still cross-on, and a long-period swell like that at a point and reef break like Waihee is going to be inconsistent and hard to line up. The trade wind is still blowing 12-15 mph, so it’ll be lumpy. It’s not worth the paddle.
After that, in the last week of July, the swell picks back up to 4-5 feet, but the period drops back down to a weak 6-8 seconds, and the wind never gives up. It’s the same story day after day: cross-on, choppy, poor conditions.
Honestly, if you’re a surfer, there’s nothing here that’s going to get you stoked. The only thing I can say is that for kite surfers, this steady cross-on wind and moderate swell might actually be interesting. For paddle surfing, it’s a blank run. It’s normal for this spot, but it doesn’t make it any easier to take.
Rusty.
