The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a rough spell ahead for us. We’re looking at a long stretch of onshore, choppy conditions that just won’t seem to let up. For the first ten days or so, every session is getting chewed up by a persistent cross-onshore breeze. The wave energy is there, but the quality is just not going to be there for a proper surf. You’ll see the combined energy sitting mostly in that moderate range, but it’s all wind-affected and messy. There’s really nothing to get excited about for a while.
The only real light at the end of the tunnel, and it's a long way off, is around the 28th of July, which is next week Tuesday. For the first time in this whole run, we get a little bit of relief with a gentler, onshore wind that's straight on. The swell at Waihee picks up to 5.6ft from the ENE, with a decent 13-second period and a strong combined energy reading. It’s flagged as marginal, but it’s the closest to clean we’re going to get. This one is for the intermediate crew who know the break. Because it’s over a week out, keep your fingers crossed.
Before that, on the 26th and 27th of July, there’s a pulse of very long period swell (16 seconds), with the energy ramping up to a massive level. But with that persistent cross-onshore wind, it’s just going to be a bumpy mess. That long-period energy needs clean conditions to shine, and it won’t have them here.
So, the standout, by default, is that Tuesday the 28th at Waihee. It's the only window where the wind drops back. We get a 5.6ft ENE groundswell with a 13-second period. It's not perfect, but it's the best on offer in a pretty bleak forecast. If you're desperate for a paddle, that's your window.
