G’day, Rusty here. Well, I gotta be straight with ya – this forecast for the Waihee area is a tough one. Right through the entire 16-day window, from now all the way to the 26th of July, it’s just one long run of poor surf conditions. There’s no standout day, no magic window, not even a morning or afternoon to get excited about. We’re looking at a solid blank run here.
The trouble starts straight away. From Saturday morning the 11th of July right through, it’s the same story over and over: a persistent ENE wind blowing at 12 to 16 mph, hitting the water as a cross-onshore breeze. That means the surface is constantly choppy and lumpy. The swell hangs around from the ENE or NE, mostly between 3 ft and 6 ft, with short periods of just 6 to 8 seconds – that’s windswell, not groundswell, so it’s weak and poorly shaped. The combined energy readings bear that out: values like 286 (weak), then bumping up to the 300s and 400s at times (moderate energy), but the poor wind just guts it all.
Even the few moments where the swell pushes a bit bigger, like the 6 ft on Sunday the 12th (410), or the 5 ft on Sunday the 26th (492), the wind is still cross-onshore and the period is too short. It’s just messy. The water temp is a balmy 79°, which is pretty much average for this time of year (anomaly of +0.4°), so that’s not the problem – it’s the wind that’s killing it.
Waihee is a reef and point break, exposed to the swell and fairly consistent, and it can handle a decent NNE swell cleanly. But with that ENE wind blowing straight across the face day after day, it’s just not gonna hold up for paddle surfing. If the wind keeps up like this, honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper surf session.
So here’s the deal: don’t hold your breath. This stretch is a write-off for quality waves. The longer this wind pattern sticks, the harder it is to find a clean wave. But hey, this area tends to turn around when the wind shifts, so it’s not always this bleak. Come back and check again soon – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
