Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waihee over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about Waihee.
Honestly, the next two weeks are a bit of a heartbreaker. We’ve got a solid 12 days of the same old story: onshore wind and washed-out surf. There's a couple of moments where the swell gets big, but it's not for the faint of heart.
From Wednesday the 8th through the morning of the 20th, it’s a battle. The wind is a steady 16-19 mph from the ENE, putting a horrible cross-on chop on everything. The swell sits around 5 to 6 feet, coming from the ENE with a short, unexciting period of 7-8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate, but it’s all wasted. Every report says "poor surf conditions" and it’s true. For a reef and point, this wind direction is a nightmare. It’s going to be choppy and messy.
Then the 18th of July rolls around and the swell pumps up to 8 feet, still from the ENE, with a period of 9 seconds. The wave energy jumps to strong levels. But the wind is still howling at 16-19 mph. This is a kite surfer's dream, not a paddle surfer's. It’s expert-only territory with a brutal wind on top.
The one window that has me interested is the 21st and 22nd of July. The swell drops to 2-3 feet, but the period goes through the roof to 17-18 seconds from the east. That’s a very long period groundswell. The wave energy is still moderate, but it brings a ton of punch. The wind is still a cross-on 13 mph, which is a pain, but for a point break like Waihee, that long period energy will create clean, well-shaped lines. The water is a warm 79°F, which is normal for the season. The crowds are "sometimes," so you might find some space. It’s the only real chance for a good surf in the whole outlook.
The bottom line? The first 12 days are a mess. The second week has a promising, but wind-affected, window on the 21st and 22nd. It’s a long way off, but it’s the only light in the tunnel.
Rusty.
