Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you how it’s looking.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Waihee is a tough one. That persistent ENE wind just won’t let up, and it’s blowing cross-on shore every single day, which is about the worst thing for cleaning up any wave. The swell is around, but it’s all short-period, junky energy that’s getting chopped up. There’s not a single standout, not a single day where I’d be stoked to paddle out. It’s a solid blank run from the start right through to the end of the forecast.
Right off the bat, from Monday afternoon the 6th of July, we’ve got a 6ft NE swell with a period of only 8 seconds and a fresh 19 mph cross-on wind. The combined energy is moderate at 371, but with that wind, it’s just lumpy and poor. This pattern locks in. Tuesday the 7th, Wednesday the 8th... same story. 6ft to 6ft of short-period ENE swell, moderate onshore winds, choppy conditions. No chance for a clean face.
The middle of the week doesn’t get any better. Thursday the 9th through Sunday the 12th, we’re stuck with 5ft to 6ft of ENE swell, period dropping to 7-8 seconds, and still that cross-on wind. The combined energy fluctuates between 249 and 432, which is moderate, but the quality is zero. It’s just a messy, poor surf scene.
Into the second week, it’s more of the same. Monday the 13th through Wednesday the 15th, we see 5ft to 6ft of ENE swell, cross-on winds, poor surf. By Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, the swell drops pretty significantly, down to 3ft to 4ft from the E, periods dropping to 6-7 seconds. The energy collapses to 162-218, which is weak. The wind still hasn’t let up, so it’s not even a fun small-wave day.
The final weekend, Saturday the 18th, is still flat and choppy. Then on Sunday the 19th, you see a little spike in energy, with a 5ft E swell (576 combined energy), but it’s still a 9-second period and cross-on wind. The real tease is Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. We get a long-period groundswell coming in from the E, with a period of 19 seconds dropping to 15 seconds. The swell is small, 2ft to 3ft, but the energy jumps to 720 and 753. That’s strong energy for the size. But here’s the killer – the wind is still cross-on from the ENE at 12 mph. That long-period swell at a point break like Waihee would normally be a dream, but with that wind direction, it’s going to be blown out and won’t hold its shape. It’s a huge missed opportunity.
Honestly, if you’re looking at the setup, the persistent cross-on wind and the beach/reef combo means this might be a better window for the kite surfers than paddle surfers. The water temp is a warm 79°, which is about normal for the time of year, so at least the paddle won’t be cold.
There’s nothing here to get excited about. Keep your board in the car and wait for the next south swell.
