The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour.
This 16-day forecast is a rough one for our region. We’ve got a big dry spell to start, with no surf worth talking about for 9 days straight.
The first real chance of a wave comes on Monday, July 27th. Up until then, it’s all cross-onshore wind from the ENE at 12 to 15 mph, keeping the ocean choppy and ugly. Swell heights bob around from 2 ft to 6 ft, but the wind just kills it. The wave energy hits a moderate 625 on the 23rd, but it’s still a no-go.
On Monday, July 27th, the wind eases up to a gentle 9 mph, still cross-on from the NE, but it’s cleaner. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the east with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, packing a punch. The energy is strong at 1177. Waihee is a reef and point, which is good, because a long period like that can be weird at beach breaks. It’s only a marginal call, but it’s the best in the whole window. The water is 79°, which is normal for the season.
Monday afternoon holds similar promise, but by Tuesday the 28th, the wind is back up to 12 mph and the window slams shut. The rest of the period into early August is just a repeat of the same story – cross-onshore breeze, poor surf, and swell heights of 2 ft to 5 ft that are all flagged as poor. The energy drops to moderate (257 to 805).
So, your only real shot is the morning of Monday, July 27th at Waihee. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only game in town. Crowds can show up “sometimes”, so expect some company. For the rest of the two weeks, you’re better off rigging up a kite than trying to paddle.
Rusty.
