The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at the local picture.
Got to be straight with you – the first week-plus is a bit of a grind. There's a long period of onshore trades and messy water. The only spot on the map is Waihee, a reef and point, but it's not showing us much for a while.
The near-term is all blown out. From Monday, July 13th right through to Friday, July 24th, it's the same story: persistent cross-onshore breezes, mainly from the ENE, and a lot of short-period, weak windswell. It's all "poor surf conditions" – not what you want to hear. The wave energy is almost always under 400, so it's weak to moderate. Crowds are "sometimes" a thing at Waihee, but it won't matter because it's just not working for this first stretch.
Then, things start to flicker. For Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th, the swell energy starts climbing. You're looking at moderate (around 554) to strong (675) energy through those days, but the conditions are still plagued by rain showers and cross-onshore wind. It's still marginal.
The real standout window, and I mean the one to save the date for, begins Monday, July 27th. The swell period jumps up to a very long 15 seconds, the wind drops way back, and the energy goes up. The best of it is Monday, July 27th morning at Waihee. You'll see a clean 4ft swell from the east with a 15-second period, combined energy of 913, and a slight air – practically glassy. That is a long-period groundswell that will wrap and wedge beautifully into the point. The only thing is it's a long way off, and that north-east swell direction is a little off the optimum NNE, but for a clean point break, you can't ask for much more. For the brave, Tuesday, July 28th morning also looks interesting with a 7ft swell from the ENE (13-second period) – but that's getting into expert-only territory. The water sits at a comfy 79°F, pretty average for the season, so no rubber needed.
So, tough it out through the slop. The payoff for that clean, lined-up groundswell at Waihee right at the end of the run is going to be worth it.
Stay patient,
Rusty.
