The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's cookin' for Waihee.
Well, I gotta be straight with you, the next couple of weeks at Waihee are a bit of a mixed bag, and honestly, for the first week and a half, it's pretty grim. We're looking at a long dry spell before any real surf shows up. From now until the 29th of July, the conditions are just plain ugly. The wind is stuck on a cross-on shore, blowing from the ENE at 12 to 15 mph, just chopping everything up. The swell is weak and short period, between 7 and 8 seconds, with energy readings barely cracking the 200-500 range (moderate). The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so that's one small comfort, but it doesn't help the waves.
You'll see a few days where the swell height bumps up a bit, like on the 22nd with a 5 ft swell and a period of 11 seconds, the energy jumps to 524 (moderate), but that cross-on wind just ruins it. It's a "poor surf" call every time. Don't bother paddling out.
Then, hold on to your board, because the last few days of July and the start of August look like a completely different ocean. On the 29th of July, we get a massive pulse of energy. The swell jumps to 13 ft on Wednesday morning, with a 14-second period, and the wind finally swings offshore from the NNE at 9 mph. The energy is a massive 6605 (very strong). By Wednesday afternoon, it's even bigger at 20 ft, with the same long period and offshore wind, and the energy is a staggering 12203 (very strong). That is a serious, serious groundswell. This is expert territory only. At that size, it's a beast.
The 30th of July Thursday morning looks incredible too, with 10 ft of swell, a 9-second period, and glassy offshore wind from the NNE at just 3 mph. The energy is still 3122 (very strong). This is the standout window. The swell direction is ENE, which is pushing into the "NNE" optimum direction for the break, so it should really light up the reef and point here at Waihee. The drawback is that with such a long period, it might be too straight for the beach sections, but the point and reef should handle it beautifully.
The 31st of July and the 1st of August, the swell drops back down, but the wind goes back to that nasty cross-on, so the window closes fast. The first week of August looks like back to the same old story of small, choppy surf.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a washout. The one true standout is the 29th and 30th of July. That Wednesday afternoon with 20 ft and offshore wind is the biggest, cleanest wave we'll see, but it's for experts only. For the slightly less suicidal, Thursday morning with 10 ft and glassy conditions is your best bet. It's a long way off, so the forecast could shift, but if it holds, those are the days to clear your schedule.
Rusty.
