The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for this stretch. We’ve only got one spot on the cards for the next 16 days, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
The whole period is dominated by a persistent cross-onshore wind from the ENE, which is really going to mess with the surface texture. The swell is on the small side for most of it, and the wind is just never quite right. There’s a long gap of poor conditions right from the start, and it doesn’t really let up for a solid week. The first week is a write-off, to be honest—mostly poor surf conditions with moderate chop, and the scores reflect that. Don’t get your hopes up.
Things finally start to look a little more interesting around the 26th of July. That’s when we see a serious jump in the combined wave energy, hitting 1313 (moderate to strong energy) on the 26th morning, and even bigger numbers into the 27th. The swell is coming from the east, with a very long period of 16 to 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, but that long period means it might be a bit too straight for the beach breaks—it’ll be better on the points and reefs. The wind is still cross-on, but it’s lighter at times, with a gentle breeze on the 27th morning, so it won’t be as chopped up.
The standout window is the 26th (Sunday) and 27th (Monday). The swell is around 4 ft to 5 ft from the east, with that long period. The energy is significant (four-digit values), so it’s got some push. The wind is still cross-on, but the lighter breeze on the 27th morning will make it the cleaner option. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, by the way.
For the break itself, Waihee is a reef and point setup, fairly consistent, and it’s exposed to the NNE swell. The optimum swell direction is NNE, so this east swell is a bit angled, but it’ll still wrap in. This spot can get crowded sometimes, so expect a few heads out. It’s an intermediate-level wave, so not for beginners. The swell stays under 5 ft, so it’s manageable for most.
So, the call is simple: sit tight through the first week of poor wind and small chop. The real action, if you can call it that, is on the 26th and 27th of July. It’s a promising long-range signal, but with the wind still being a factor, it’s not a guaranteed epic. It’s the only thing on the menu, so make the most of it.
