The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the stretch ahead for Waihee. This is a reef and point set-up, exposed to the NNE, and usually handles a fair bit of action. But I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty frustrating. There’s a long gap of poor conditions before we see anything worth paddling out for. The standouts are right at the very end of the window, so we’ll need some patience.
Starting from Thursday the 20th of August right through to almost the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The wind is hammering in from the ENE, mostly cross-onshore at 12 to 18 mph, and it’s just choppy, messy, and lumpy. Swell is small to moderate, around 2 ft to 6 ft, but the energy is weak to moderate (between 97 and 566) and with that rubbish wind, the surface is wrecked. Water temp sits at a very average 80°, nothing unusual there. Honestly, there’s not a single session in that first ten days I’d recommend.
Into the last days of August and the start of September, things shift. The swell really starts to crank up, but the wind is still a problem. On Monday the 31st of August, we see a solid 8 ft ENE swell rolling in, with very strong energy jumping up to 1718. The wind swings more onshore from the NE at 9-12 mph, but the surf is still labelled as marginal due to questionable tide conditions. It’s big – over 8 ft – so that’s expert-only territory, and still not clean.
Now, the real standout to keep an eye on is Tuesday the 1st of September. Swell is a solid 10 ft from the ENE, with a period around 10 seconds – that’s a decent groundswell with proper energy (1542 to 2469), so it’s packing a punch. The wind eases right back to a light 3 to 6 mph cross-onshore, almost glassy in the morning. This is the best we get. Waihee (Maui) will have some size, but that 10 ft is big, so only for the experienced crew. Crowds are possible here – it’s a spot that can get busy. The swell direction isn’t a perfect match for the optimum NNE, coming more from the ENE, but with that clean-ish wind and serious power, it’s your best bet. It’s the one session in the whole 16 days that’s worth blocking out time for.
After that, into Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September, the swell drops back to 6-6 ft, and the cross-onshore wind picks up again to 9-12 mph, killing the quality. Energy drops back to the 350-500 range, and we’re back to choppy, poor surf.
So, to wrap it up: a long, flat, and choppy start, then one big, promising day on the 1st of September if you’ve got the skill, and then a quick fade. It’s a tough run for Waihee.
Rusty.
