The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Waihee. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks. The wind is relentless, and it’s coming from the wrong direction for this spot. The only break we’ve got to work with is Waihee, a reef and point, which typically loves a NNE swell, but we’re not seeing that.
The water temp is sitting at 79°F at the start, with a tiny anomaly of 0.4°F, so it’s bang on average for this time of year.
Right now, through the first week and a half, it’s a write-off. From Thursday the 16th through to the 30th of July, everything is marked as poor surf. The wind is a constant cross-on from the ENE, mostly in the 12 to 15 mph range, sometimes getting up to 19 mph. That’s going to chop everything up. Swell heights bounce around between 2ft and 6ft, but with that wind, it’s just ugly. The period is mostly short, under 8 seconds, so it’s weak, crumbly stuff. The combined energy is moderate, hitting 124 (weak) early on Thursday, picking up to 309 and 402 over the weekend, but it’s all junk. There’s a bit of a jump on the 22nd and 23rd with longer period swells hitting 12 and 13 seconds, but the wind is still cross-on, ruining any chance of clean lines. The energy climbs to 441 on the 23rd afternoon, but it’s just a messy, lumpy mess.
We finally see a glimmer of hope on the 27th and 28th of July. The conditions shift from “poor” to “marginal.” The wind drops off a bit, down to 6–9 mph, and the swell period gets long. Monday the 27th sees 4ft of swell from the east with a very long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is huge, over 1,300, but the wind is still cross-on, keeping it from being clean. By Tuesday the 28th, the swell builds to 6ft from the east, with a 13-second period, and the wind is almost light at 6 mph. The energy is still strong at 1,308. This is the best of a bad lot, but it’s far from perfect. The cross-on wind will still put a chop on the face, and that long period swell at a beach break like this can make it wall up and close out. It’s a better bet for the experienced crew.
Beyond that, the 29th and 30th fade back into mediocrity – smaller swell and the wind picks up again. The 31st has a brief spike in energy from a 4ft north-easterly swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is still cross-on at 12 mph.
To be honest, for the entire 16-day window, there’s nothing that’s a true standout for a standard paddle session. The constant cross-on wind is the killer. This setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent cross-on breeze and the moderate swell energy. Keep an eye on the 28th, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
Rusty.
