The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let me paint the same picture for you, just in feet and miles per hour.
So, Waihee is the only spot we’re looking at, and it’s a rough 16-day outlook. If you want a decent wave, you’ll have to be very patient, because for most of this run, the ocean is a mess.
From Friday the 21st of August, through the end of the month, the winds are blowing cross-onshore non-stop. The swell height is between 3ft and 5ft, coming from the E and ENE, with a short, weak period of about 7 to 8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate, but every session is rated as "poor surf conditions." It’s all chop, no style. There’s a solid 9-day gap of nothing worthwhile.
Now, on Sunday the 30th of August, things get interesting in size. The swell jumps to 6ft to 6ft from the ENE, with a longer period of 12 to 13 seconds. The energy is strong (1123 to 1146), meaning some real push is in the water. But the wind is still a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s only "marginal." This is the best of a bad bunch.
Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September see the swell go big – 7ft to 12ft from the ENE, with a 13-second period. The energy is monstrous (over 3000). But Tuesday brings near gale to gale-force cross-onshore winds, rain, and thunderstorms. Completely blown out, dangerous, and strictly for experts only.
Into September, the swell drops back to 3ft to 5ft, but the wind stays onshore all the way to the end of the forecast. On the 5th of September, we get a long-period groundswell of 0.7ft (2ft) with a 15-second period from the E, but again, the wind ruins it.
Honestly, there are no standouts. If you had to try, Sunday the 30th of August offers the biggest, most powerful swell with strong energy (1123 to 1146), but the wind keeps it from being good. Waihee is a reef and point break, so it can handle the size, but cross-onshore wind is a deal-breaker. You might see a few other souls out there, but not many.
This is a long dry spell. Just wait for a change in the wind.
Rusty.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 28°C on Fri morning, min 25°C on Thu night). Winds increasing (calm on Thu night, fresh winds from the ENE by Sat afternoon). | Days 5-7 Weather SummarySome drizzle, heaviest during Mon morning.
