The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for Waihee over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first week and a half is a tough slog. From Tuesday the 14th all the way through to Saturday the 26th, the conditions are just plain poor. We’ve got a solid stretch of cross-onshore winds and choppy, messy surf. The wave energy is weak to moderate – bouncing around between 120 and 383 (moderate energy at best) – and the swell periods are short, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, meaning weak, crumbly waves. The combined swell energy doesn’t ever get strong enough to get excited about. Honestly, this is a stretch where you’re better off waiting for the next window.
The water temp at Waihee is sittin’ at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
Now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long way off. On Sunday the 27th and Monday the 28th, we start to see a real shift. A long-period groundswell rolls in from the E with a period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 816 (strong) on Monday morning. That’s proper energy. The swell is around 3 to 4 ft, but with that kind of period, those waves will have some punch. The wind is still cross-onshore, but it drops to a gentle breeze, so the surface won’t be as blown out. The real standout in this whole outlook is Monday the 27th morning. It’s the best on offer. The swell direction (E) lines up nicely with the optimum for Waihee (NNE), meaning the reef and point will handle it well. The period is very long, so the sets will be clean and powerful, with longer gaps – perfect for a point break like this. It’s not the biggest, but the quality is there.
Then by Tuesday the 28th afternoon and Wednesday the 29th, the wind turns offshore (NNE then NE), and the swell drops a touch but stays long (12-13 seconds), with energy still in the 400s (moderate). The surf is still marginal due to tide, but it’s a big step up from the week prior. If you can wait, that Monday morning is the true standout.
So, overall, it’s a long wait. The first 11 days are a washout. Then the final 5 days show promise, with Monday the 27th being the best window. Keep your eyes on the horizon for that one.
Rusty.
