The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking like a total right-off for any decent waves. I've scanned the whole 16-day forecast, and there isn't one day that's going to have you charging out of the house. This is one of those long, flat, and frustrating spells where the ocean just can't get a rhythm going.
The main issue is a relentless cross-onshore wind that’s going to keep everything choppy and messy. The swell direction is all wrong for this spot, and the period is mostly short and weak, with no real power behind it. The combined energy builds through the second week, but it's all just a big, wind-blown mess. It starts weak and ramps up to strong levels, but it's all for nothing.
There is a tiny glimmer of hope on Thursday the 20th, with the wind going glassy for the afternoon. The swell is a weak 4ft at 7 seconds from the NE. It's not going to be good, but it's the only time we'll see flat, clean water. It's a "surfable but very ordinary" kind of day. If you're desperate, you might get a few soft ones, but don't expect much. From Friday the 21st on, it's a complete write-off. The cross-onshore wind is back and it stays poor, choppy, and lumpy all the way through to the 1st of September.
The last day on the books, Wednesday the 2nd of September, has a change in the wind to the north-northeast, which is at least offshore. The swell period also jumps to 10-11 seconds, and there's a massive amount of energy behind it. But it's a long way out, and the conditions are still marked as questionable. It could be a year's worth of swell in one day, or it could be a complete, unsurfable mess. It's promising, but very uncertain.
Throughout all this, the water temperature is about normal for this time of year. So, no surprises there. For a beginner, Thursday might offer a few small, clean waves, but they won't be challenging. For anyone else, this is a good fortnight to catch up on other things. The forecast can change, but as it stands right now, I'd leave the board at home. There might be a glimmer of hope on the 2nd, but that's over a week away and a long shot.
Rusty.
