The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in with the local scoop for Waihee.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you. This forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell that stretches from Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to the end of the month. The wind is just not playing nice, coming in from the ENE and E, constantly cross-onshore, which is keeping the surface all chopped up and lumpy. The energy is there, but it’s messy. For the first week and a half, the surf conditions are pretty poor. Around the 24th and 25th of August, the swell pushes up to 5.9ft, and the combined energy climbs into the moderate range (463), but it’s still blown out. Then we get a bit of a drop, and it picks up again towards the end of the month. By the 31st of August, the swell is up to 6.6ft, and the energy is strong (688), but that cross-onshore wind is still killing it.
Now, the real story is the turn-around on the 2nd of September. This is the standout for the whole outlook. The forecast shows a 7.5ft swell from the ENE (9-second period), but the wind is due to swing around to light W, turning it glassy. We’re talking clean conditions. The combined energy is strong at 829, and it’s a reef and point setup, so that longer period groundswell should wrap in nicely. It’s a bit of a wait, but this is the one to circle on your calendar. The water is sitting at a warm 79.7°, which is right on the money for this time of year.
The day after, on the 3rd of September, it gets a bit skittish again with the wind switching back to a cross, but the morning of the 2nd is the real gem. Just keep in mind, Waihee can get a crowd sometimes, so get there early if you can.
Stay patient, and don't sleep on that glassy morning in September.
