The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for Waihee.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks are a bit of a write-off for decent waves. The whole 16-day stretch is filled with forecasts saying "poor surf conditions," and the finder ain't pointing to anything worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a solid fortnight of cross-onshore winds blowing from the ENE and NE, making everything choppy and lumpy. The swell is small, mostly around 3ft to 5ft, and the period is short, around 6 to 8 seconds, so it’s weak, disorganised windswell. The combined energy figures are all in the low to moderate range, with the highest being 659 (moderate) on the 27th of July, but even that’s paired with messy wind.
For the first week, from the 14th through to the 20th of July, the wind is a constant problem. It’s 9 to 19 mph out of the ENE, which is cross-on at Waihee. The water temp is about average for the time of year, around 79°, so no drama there, but it won’t help the waves.
The second week, from the 21st of July onward, the pattern doesn’t change. The wind stays cross-on, the swell stays small and short-period. Even on the 26th and 27th, when the period jumps to 14 and 15 seconds, the swell height drops to 3ft-3ft, and the wind is still ruining it. Those longer-period swells are better suited to points and reefs, but with the wind, it’s just a messy close-out. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
No standouts here. It’s a blank run, and for this area, it’s not uncommon to see a stretch like this. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d keep the board in the car.
Rusty.
