Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this one’s a tough read. The whole 16-day window at Waihee is a write-off for good surf. That’s right, no standout sessions, no hidden gems. The onshore wind is relentless, coming out of the ENE, and it’s cross-on every single day. That combo is going to chop everything up into a messy, lumpy, unappealing mess.
We start off on Friday, the 3rd of July, with clear skies but that ENE breeze blowing at 12 mph. Swell is around 5 ft from the ENE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, sitting at just 240, and the water temp is a normal 79°F. From there, it’s the same old story right through the weekend. Saturday and Sunday push the swell up a touch to around 5 ft, but the wind stays steady and the wave state is described as "choppy" all day. It’s not beginner-friendly with the swell between 5 ft and 5 ft, but the quality is so poor even an expert won't have fun.
Come Monday, the 6th of July, the wind picks up to 19 mph in the afternoon, making it fresh and lumpy. Swell hits 6 ft, but it’s from the NE and still short-period at 8 seconds. The energy is moderate at 362, but with that onshore wind, it’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one.
This flat, messy pattern carries on straight through the week and into the second week. By Friday the 10th, swell drops to 4 ft and energy plummets to 147. There’s a small glimmer on Tuesday the 14th where we see a long-period groundswell from the WNW at 16 seconds, but it’s only 1 ft tall—that’s barely a ripple—and the cross-on wind is still there. For a reef and point break like Waihee, a long-period swell would normally be a blessing, but not with no power behind it.
Later in the second week, around Wednesday the 15th, that same WNW groundswell shows up again, this time with moderate energy of 309. But again, it’s a tiny 2 ft, and the wind is still cross-on. The rest of the week sees moderate energy around 300–400, but the swell direction is all over the place from ENE to E and the period is short, so the waves will be weak and choppy.
Honestly, if you’re a dedicated surfer in this corner of the world, you’re waiting for the forecasts to change. The break is fairly consistent, so this kind of blank run isn't the norm. But for now, from the 3rd of July all the way through to the 18th, there is nothing worth paddling out for. When the wind is this stubborn and the swell this short and messy, you’re better off finding something else to do.
This is Rusty, signing off.
