Table - best surf conditions forecast for Waihee over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again. Let me level with you – this 16-day stretch for Waihee is a total bummer. The whole forecast is just one long run of poor surf and cross-onshore winds, so don’t expect any magic. There’s not a single window where the stars align. The water is sitting at 79°, which is about average for the time of year, so at least the temperature is fine while you’re waiting for something that never comes.
The first chance to paddle out is Thursday morning, July 9th. You’re looking at a 6ft swell from the ENE with a short, weak 8-second period. The combined energy is a weak 336, and that 25 km/h ENE cross-on breeze is wrecking it, making it choppy and messy. It’s a total write-off. This same story just repeats every single day. The swell bounces between 4ft and 7ft, but it’s all short-period windswell from the ENE or E, and the wind never lets up. On Sunday, July 12th, the swell hits 7ft (447 energy), but it’s still poor with that same 25 km/h cross-on wind. A couple of times, like Tuesday morning, July 21st, the period jumps to 16 seconds (774 energy) from the E, which is some proper groundswell, but it’s still getting hammered by a 20 km/h cross-on wind. At a point and reef break like Waihee, that long period would be a dream, but with that wind, it’s just a blown-out, lumpy mess.
The second week is more of the same. The swell drops a little, but the onshore wind pattern holds. The best you can say is on Wednesday morning, July 22nd, there’s a brief moment with NE winds at 15 km/h, but the swell is a tiny 3ft with a 14-second period (379 energy). It’s still not good. By the end of the run, the swell is tiny and weak, with energy readings down to 101 and 110. With all that onshore wind and constant chop, to be honest, this setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. Keep your board in the car.
Rusty.
