The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for the next sixteen days, and I gotta be straight with you—it's a tough stretch for the regular paddler. The only break I've got on the radar is Waihee, a reef and point set-up, and it's exposed to swell out of the NNE. But don't get your hopes up too quick.
The immediate outlook is a real bummer. From Wednesday, August 19th, right through to the end of August, we're looking at a solid block of poor surf conditions. The wind is a constant cross-onshore from the ENE, blowing at 6 to 19 mph, which is just making a mess of things. The swell is tiny, peaking at a pathetic 6 ft, with a weak period of 7 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate at best, with values like 124 and 183, but it's all chop and no shape. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is 0.2° cooler than normal, so it's pretty average for this time of year.
This grim run stretches all the way through to the end of August. Every single session is scored a zero—completely unsurfable. The wind is relentless, the swell is poor, and the wave comment is always "poor surf conditions." It's a real desert.
Now, finally, there's a glimmer on the horizon. On Wednesday, September 2nd, things start to look a little more interesting. The swell bumps up to 7 ft, and the period stretches to a solid 11 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to a very strong 1100, so there's a lot of power in the water. But the wind is still a cross-onshore from the ENE at 9 mph, leaving us with "marginal surf forecast" conditions. It's still a bit choppy, but it's the best we've got. For a point and reef break like Waihee, that longer period is a positive—it'll wrap around and offer some shape, but the cross-onshore wind will keep it from being pristine. It's a one-out-of-ten, but it's a start.
That's about it, folks. The first week and a half is a write-off, but the second week shows a little pulse. Keep your eyes on the forecast for September 2nd, but don't plan a trip around it just yet.
Rusty.
