The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you—this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for paddle surfing. The wind is just relentless, coming out of the east-northeast almost every day, and it's blowing cross-on shore at Waihee. That means the surface is going to be chopped up and messy, not the kind of clean face you want to drop into. We're looking at a solid two-week gap with no real recommendations worth chasing.
The first few days, from Monday the 17th through to the end of the month, it's all the same story. The swell is small, mostly under 5 ft, with a short period around 7 to 8 seconds—that's just windswell, not a proper groundswell. The combined energy is weak to moderate (209), so there's just not enough push to get excited about, even if the wind was good. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
As we get into the last week of August and the start of September, the swell actually picks up. By Friday the 28th, we're looking at a 10 ft swell from the east with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is pumping hard (1580). That's a serious amount of water moving. But here's the kicker—the wind is still howling from the ENE at 15 mph, cross-on, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. That size is only for experts, and even then, the conditions are going to be ugly. For a spot like Waihee, a reef and point break, that powerful east swell with a moderate period would be firing if the wind was offshore, but it's not. It's a real shame.
So, what's the best on offer? There isn't a standout. The whole period is a no-go for a good surf. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest, with that consistent cross-onshore wind and a building swell. If you're dying to get wet, the smallest days with the lightest wind (like Thursday the 20th or Friday the 21st) might give you a few grovelly, bumpy ones, but don't expect much. It's a blank run, and for this area, it's not unusual to get a stretch like this when the trade winds lock in.
Rusty.
