Alright folks, Rusty here.
Well, I gotta be straight with you—this 16-day stretch for our area is a tough one. There’s surf on the charts, sure, but the conditions are just not playing ball. We’re looking at a solid run of onshore wind and messy, choppy lineups. It’s one of those forecasts where you’re better off saving the wax for another week.
We start off on Sunday the 5th of July with a clean sky overhead, but that’s where the good news ends. The wind is pumping from the ENE at 15 mph, right on the cross, turning a 5ft swell into a lumpy mess. The combined swell energy is a weak 325, and with a short period of 8 seconds, there’s just no power or shape to work with. No score from me, and honestly, that’s the story for the next two weeks.
Day after day, it’s the same script. Monday the 6th picks up a little more size at 6ft, but the wind kicks up to 19 mph, and the wave energy jumps to 397—still moderate, but totally ruined by the onshore breeze. By Tuesday the 7th we hit 6ft and energy touches 405, but again, that dirty cross-on wind ruins any chance of a clean face.
The pattern doesn’t let up. We go through Thursday, Friday, right into the second week. The wind lightens a touch to 12 mph around Sunday the 12th, but it stays cross-on, and the swell drops back to 5ft with weak energy in the 300s. Even the best-looking numbers, like an 18th of July swell at 6ft and energy climbing to 480, still come with a 15 mph cross-on wind. It’s gutting—there’s size, there’s energy, but it’s all chopped to bits.
This is a blank run. Nothing in this 16-day window is worth paddling out for. Waihee is a reef and point break that would love a nice clean NE groundswell, but with ENE winds hammering it straight on the cross day in and day out, it’s a washout. If you’re really desperate to get wet, this setup looks way more suitable for a kite than a surfboard. The crowds won’t be an issue at least—nobody’s gonna be out there in this stuff.
Keep your head up, though. Forecasts change. For now, leave the board in the car and wait for a better day.
