The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Waihee over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, for the next week and a half, it’s going to be a tough slog. The wind is locked in from the east-northeast, blowing cross-on at 10 to 19 mph, and that's keeping everything choppy and messy. We've got swell coming in, mostly from the east and east-northeast, with heights between 3ft and 5ft, but the periods are short—mostly 6 to 8 seconds. The combined energy sits in that moderate range, between 112 and 320, but with that wind, the surface is just too lumpy for a good time. The water temp is sitting at 79° with a dead-average anomaly of 0.3°, so nothing unusual there. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for a proper session through to at least the 23rd of July.
Things get a little more interesting around the 24th and 25th of July. We see some longer-period swell starting to mix in—up to 17 seconds on the morning of the 24th—coming from the east. The heights are small, 2ft and 3ft, but the combined energy jumps up to 254 and then a very respectable 471. But here’s the kicker: the wind is still cross-on from the northeast and east-northeast at 10 to 12 mph. The wave comment says "poor surf conditions," so even with that longer period, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Not the standout you’re hoping for.
Now, the real tease comes on the 26th of July. Sunday morning sees a combined energy of 1003 from the east with a 16-second period and a 4ft swell. That's very long-period groundswell, the kind that really needs a point or reef setup to wrap in properly. For a spot like Waihee—a reef and point break that loves a north-northeast swell—this east swell isn't ideal, and the wind stays cross-on from the east-northeast at 12 mph. The wave comment says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions," so it's not a total write-off, but it's not clean. The afternoon is similar at 4ft with a 15-second period and 887 energy.
If I had to pick the best of a tough bunch, it would be that Sunday the 26th of July. The swell has serious energy and period, but the wind is the problem. It’s not a washout, but it’s not the classic Waihee glass. If you're an experienced surfer who knows the break well, you might find a few, but for most of us, it's a wait-and-see.
After that, it’s back to the same chop and cross-on wind through to the end of the month.
So, to sum it up: the next week and a half is a no-go. The only flicker of hope is Sunday the 26th of July, but with the wind on it, it’s not a guarantee. Keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
