The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a proper surf. The predominant wind is locked in from the ENE, blowing cross-on, and that’s just chopping everything up. It ain’t pretty.
Looking at the first surf window, on Tuesday the 14th, we’ve got a small 3ft swell from the NNE at Waihee, but with that 9 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s poor. The combined energy is weak at 226. It’s the same story Wednesday and Thursday; the swell bumps up to 4ft, but the wind picks up to 12-16 mph, making it messy. The period is short, around 5-7 seconds, so it’s just wind slop. Water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year.
This pattern of cross-onshore winds and poor surf drags on all the way through Thursday, July 24th. Every day is the same story: small swell, choppy conditions, and no real hope. There’s a solid 10-day gap here with no recommendations.
Now, we start to see some real change around Saturday, July 26th. The swell picks up to 4ft, but the big news is the period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The energy is strong (975). The wind is still cross-on, but the potential is there. This is a long period swell, so it’s better suited to the point and reef setup at Waihee, but the beach breaks might be too straight. It’s a marginal call.
Sunday, July 27th, is even bigger with a 4ft swell and a 15-second period, and the energy is very strong (1070). Still, that cross-on wind is the spoiler. The best of the window looks to be Tuesday, July 29th, when the swell hits 6ft from the ENE with a 14-second period. The energy is very strong (1548). This is pushing into expert territory though, as it’s over 5ft. The wind is still cross-on, but it’s a gentle breeze, so it might clean up a little. For a true standout, you’d want that offshore wind, but we don’t get it here. The Wednesday, July 30th, keeps the 7ft swell going, but again, it’s marginal.
If you’re a kite surfer, this whole stretch is probably more interesting than paddle surfing, given the consistent cross-onshore winds and decent wave energy.
Rusty.
