Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. I gotta be straight with you about the next few weeks at Waihee. As it stands right now, this whole outlook is a bust. There isn't a single session in the 16-day run that I'd even think about paddling out for. This is a total blank stretch.
From Monday, July 6th, all the way through Tuesday, July 21st, you are looking at the same frustrating pattern. The main problem is those northeast trade winds. They blow between 15 mph and 30 mph, always from a cross-onshore direction, just tearing up the surface of the ocean. Every report shows the water is choppy or lumpy, and that's not gonna change.
There is definitely energy in the water – you can see moderate wave energy numbers like 301 and 420 – but it's all coming from the east-northeast or northeast. For Waihee, a reef and point break on the Big Island, that is the worst possible direction. It's almost directly onshore, and the swell period is short, mostly around 8 seconds. You get a short, steep, wind-blown mess, not the clean peeling lines Waihee is known for.
In the first week, from July 6th to the 12th, the report is consistent: "fresh cross-onshore and lumpy," or "moderate cross-onshore and choppy." It's just ugly. The second week, from the 13th to the 21st, is a copy-paste. The same winds chop up the same sloppy swell. Wave heights sit between 4 ft and 6 ft, but it doesn’t matter one bit when the wind is that strong and wrong.
Honestly, with this constant wind and short, bumpy swell, the setup looks way better for a kite than a surfboard. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a long dry spell. This spot is usually fairly consistent, so spells this bad don't tend to last forever, but right now? You’re better off waiting for the next forecast update.
Rusty.
