The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you straight up. This forecast for Waihee is a tough one. For the next two weeks, we’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. The waves are there, but the wind is just not our friend. From now until pretty much the end of the month, we’re looking at a constant cross-onshore breeze from the ENE, and that’s going to keep things choppy and messy. The swell is small, mostly sitting around 4ft to 5ft, and those short, weak periods (5 to 8 seconds) mean the waves just don’t have any punch. The combined energy is weak, bouncing around between 121 and 349, which is just a sign of how limp it all is. It’s going to be a frustrating week for anyone trying to get a clean ride.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 27th. We finally get a shift in the wind to a light onshore breeze from the NE, which is a huge improvement. The swell jumps up in period to a very long 15 seconds, a proper groundswell, with the combined energy hitting a solid 659. That’s a big change. The swell is coming from the east, which is a good direction for this reef and point break. The wave height is only 3ft, so it’s not huge, but that long period will make it more powerful than the size suggests. Keep in mind, with a period that long, it might break a bit straight on the beach sections, but the point here at Waihee should handle it. The water is a warm 79°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Monday, July 28th, is the real standout. The swell builds to 6ft to 6ft from the east, with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy surges into the strong range at 1019 to 1134. This is the biggest, most energetic swell of the whole outlook. The wind is still a gentle cross-onshore from the ENE, which is a shame, but it's light enough that it shouldn't trash the waves completely. At this size, it’s going to be a bit much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, this is the best window we’ve got. The long period and east swell direction are ideal for the point setup at Waihee. Crowds are a possibility here, so be ready to share.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. The last two days of July are where it’s at. Sunday the 27th is a promising start with clean conditions and a long-period groundswell, but Monday the 28th is the one to circle. It’s the biggest, most powerful swell of the period, and if the light wind holds, it could be a real treat. Get out there if you can.
Rusty.
