The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Right now, we’re looking at a pretty grim stretch for Villefranche sur Mer. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. The first record is for the 23rd of August, and it’s a big fat zero. The swell is tiny, the period is junk, and it’s coming from the wrong direction. The water is 82°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only interesting thing.
The one spot we have, Villefranche sur Mer, is a reef break that rarely breaks. It’s an advanced wave, and it’s only fair to middling for exposure. The swell direction that might work is from the south, but what we’re getting is mostly east and south-west slop.
On the 27th of August, Thursday morning, the swell picks up to 3ft from the east, with a period of just 4 seconds. That’s sloppy, short-period windswell. The energy is weak (36). At least the wind is glassy, so the water will be clean as a mirror, but with no push and short period, it’s barely a ripple. The afternoon gets a bit more height at 3ft, but the wind swings onshore from the east at 9 mph, so it’ll be a choppy mess.
The 29th of August, Saturday, has no swell at all. Clean sky, offshore wind, but nothing to ride.
The best we can hope for is the 5th of September, Saturday afternoon. The swell hits 4ft from the east-southeast, with a period of 5 seconds. The energy is still low (91) but it’s the biggest of the whole run. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it won’t be perfect, but it’s the only time the wave height is over 3ft. Still, the period is short, so it’s not going to be a proper groundswell—just messy windswell.
If you’ve got a kite, this setup might be your thing. For a paddle surfer, the whole 16-day period is a total blank. It’s one of those rare, quiet runs for this area. Usually, it’s not this bad for this long, but hey, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
