The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for this corner of the Med.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is pretty flat and frustrating. Villefranche sur Mer is a reef set-up that’s rarely breaking anyway, and this forecast does nothing to change that. From Friday 21st August right through to the morning of Thursday 27th, the swell is tiny - mostly below 2 ft, with periods under 6 seconds and combined wave energy barely registering (single to low double digits). Winds are light but often cross or onshore, and the water temp is sitting at 83° - that’s 9° warmer than usual, really unusual for this time of year, so you’ll be swimming in a bath with no waves.
Then we get a little flicker of hope. Friday morning 28th August shows a pulse of 6 ft swell from the SW, period 6 seconds, with a clean offshore breeze from the W at 9 mph. The combined energy jumps to 252 - moderate - and the call is “surfable but very ordinary”. That’s the best of a very average bunch, but it’s still a short-period swell, and the reef might not hold it well. By the afternoon the wind swings onshore and it’s blown out.
Saturday 29th August morning is the real standout in this whole 16-day window. Swell holds at 6 ft from the WSW, period 7 seconds, with a clean cross-offshore from the NW at 9 mph. Combined energy hits 548 - strong. That’s the biggest and most energetic push we get, and the reef should offer some shape, though the short period means it might be a bit crumbly. Still, this is the one session worth paddling out for if you’re an advanced surfer – it’s too big for beginners.
After that, it’s back to flatness. The 30th of August through to the 5th of September sees nothing but tiny leftovers under 2 ft, period mostly 4-5 seconds, and energy barely hitting double digits. Winds are light and variable, but there’s no swell to work with. A couple of glassy mornings on the 4th and 5th, but with zero swell. That’s a long, dry gap.
So, bottom line: if you’re hanging for a wave, the Saturday 29th morning is your best bet. Don’t expect much else.
