The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Villefranche-Sur-Mer stretch over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a struggle for any decent surf. You’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a wave worth paddling for. For the first week, from the 22nd of August right through to the 28th, we’re talking tiny, weak energy with combined swell readings sitting in the weak range (under 100). Most mornings are clean with light offshore or glassy conditions, but there’s just no swell behind it. The water is about 83°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a dip will feel nice.
The only real blip of hope comes on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning sees a little bump of 4ft from the SW. It’s not huge, but it’s the biggest we’ll see. The combined energy nudges up to a moderate 108, and with a light offshore from the NW and a 6-second period, it’ll be clean. The catch is that Villefranche sur Mer is a reef that rarely breaks, and the swell direction is not ideal for its optimum S direction. This is really just a surfable wave in very ordinary conditions – a 4ft wave for an advanced crew only. The afternoon glass off is even smaller.
After that, we fade back into tiny, weak junk through the start of September. The 1st of September brings a tiny 3ft to 3ft from the SW with moderate energy (40-47), but the wind is cross-on, so it won’t be pretty. From the 2nd of September onward, it’s essentially flat, with days of zero energy. There’s a gap of several days with no recommendations at all.
Bottom line: the only standout is Saturday the 29th of August morning. It’s not a classic, but it’s the one window where you might get a few clean, small waves if you’re an expert and know the reef well. For everyone else, the kite looks more interesting than a paddle board this fortnight.
Rusty.
