Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the Med's got cooking for us around Villefranche-sur-Mer. I'll be straight with you – it's a tough outlook. The entire 16-day window is a real struggle, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. We're looking at a long, dry spell of flat to tiny conditions. The first real, albeit weak, pulse of energy doesn't show up until almost two weeks out, around the 16th of July. Even then, it's nothing to write home about.
The only break on the cards is Villefranche sur Mer, a reef setup that, let's be honest, rarely breaks. That alone tells you we're scraping the bottom of the barrel. For the first two weeks, it's a whole lot of nothing. You'll get the odd 1 ft to 1 ft slop from the south, with periods so short (3-4 seconds) it's basically just wind chop. The water is currently a balmy 78°, which is a massive 8° warmer than usual for this time of year — that's really unusual, like bath water.
The first faint glimmer of something happens on Thursday the 16th in the afternoon. A little 3 ft easterly swell shows up, but the energy is still weak (29). The wind is a light cross-onshore from the south, so conditions won't be great. It's really just the first sign of a pulse.
The best shot we get – and I use the term loosely – is the morning of Friday the 17th of July. We've got a 2 ft swell from the SSW with a 5-second period, and the wind is offshore from the WNW. That means the surface will be clean. The energy is still very weak, though (24). It's tiny and it's a reef break that's rarely breaking, so you'd need luck and a log. Crowds are possible here sometimes, but honestly, on a 2 ft day at a rarely-breaking reef, you might have it to yourself.
The next morning, Saturday the 18th, starts glassy with a 2 ft SW swell (period 5 seconds, energy 15), but that's about it. It's tiny, it's weak, and after that, it fizzles back out again.
To be brutally honest, there are no standouts here. The whole period is a write-off for any decent surfing. If you're desperate, that Friday the 17th morning is your only real window, and it's a gamble at a spot that doesn't often cooperate. The long gap of flatness up front is pretty normal for this area during the summer, so don't hold your breath. A blank run is more common than not. Forecasts can change, but right now, it's a stay-at-home kind of forecast for surfers.
Rusty.
