The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the forecast for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, I’m scratching my head a bit here. The whole outlook is a bit of a tough one, with no real standout sessions to get excited about. The water is sitting at a toasty 82°, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you’re just keen for a swim, it’s perfect, but for surfing? We’re in a dry spell.
The first real chance to even look at a wave comes on Friday the 17th, but it’s a sad little 1ft south swell with a period of only 4 seconds. That’s basically wind chop, and with a cross-on breeze, it’s just not worth paddling out for. The combined energy is a measly (5), so forget about it.
Saturday the 18th looks a tiny bit better in the morning. We get a 2ft SSW swell, but again, the period is a pathetic 4 seconds, and the energy is still low (14). The wind is glassy though, which is a nice start to the day. It’s still going to be a bumpy, weak mess, but if you’re desperate for a splash, that’s your window. The afternoon turns onshore, so it’s gone.
From Sunday the 19th all the way through to the end of the month, it’s a long, drawn-out stretch of nothing. We’re talking tiny swells, all under 3ft, with periods barely cracking 6 seconds. The wind is a mix of glassy mornings and onshore afternoons, but the waves are just too small and weak to do anything. There’s a gap of nearly two weeks with no real surf on offer. The energy readings are all in the single digits or low twenties, which is basically flat.
The only flicker of something comes on the 31st of July, Friday afternoon. We get a 3ft SW swell with a 5-second period, and the energy bumps up to (27). It’s still not good, but it’s the best of a bad lot. The wind is going to be a messy cross-onshore though, so it’s going to be choppy.
Villefranche sur Mer is a reef break that rarely breaks, and this forecast confirms it. It’s an advanced spot, so even if there was swell, you’d need to know what you’re doing. The crowds are only sometimes an issue, but honestly, with this forecast, you’ll probably have the place to yourself. There’s simply nothing to ride.
It’s a bleak one, folks. Don’t hold your breath for the second week either. The 1st of August looks just as flat. Keep the board in the car and the expectations low. This is one of those times where the forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
