The Lowdown
Alright, let's have a look at what we've got cookin' for Villefranche-sur-Mer.
First off, the honest truth is, it's gonna be a tough stretch for we paddle surfers. We've got a 16-day window, and I'm looking right through it, but there's not a single session I'd call good. It's a rare-breaks reef setup and it's living up to that name for sure. The first couple of weeks are pretty much a write-off; you're looking at a long, blank run unless you're desperate for a knee-high dribble and don't mind driving home dry. The water temp is bang on average for this time of year, so no excuses there.
For the mornings that are glassy, like July 18th and 19th, you'll see some tiny 1ft to 2ft pulses from the SSW, but with a period of only 4 seconds, that's all chop and no push. The combined energy is so weak it barely registers (8-13). Don't even bother with the afternoons—that SE wind fills in and messes up whatever tiny ripple was there.
Now, I gotta point out the only day that even gets a flicker of interest, and that is the morning of July 29th. We finally see a bit of energy coming through with a combined swell energy of 147 (moderate). The swell bumps up to 3ft from the S with a period of 8 seconds, which is just on the edge of something rideable. The wind is a light cross-shore from the NNE, so it'll be a bit bumpy but not howling. Still, the "poor surf conditions" label sticks, and for a break that rarely breaks, this is still a gamble. The afternoon of that same day pushes 5ft from the E, but the wind goes onshore, so it's not the call.
Honestly, for this whole forecast, the surf just isn't there. If you're dead set on getting wet, bring a log and a whole lot of patience for those 1ft mornings. Otherwise, it's a perfect time to wax the roof racks.
Rusty.
