The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s get straight into it, because frankly, we’re looking at a pretty flat stretch of water ahead. For the next 16 days, the surf around here is going to be a real test of patience. There’s no big swell on the horizon, and most days are going to be a lot of nothing.
The only spot that even gets a mention is Villefranche sur Mer (Villefranche-Sur-Mer). It’s a reef break that almost never breaks, so when it does show a pulse, you need to be on it. But honestly, the models are showing just a few glimmers in a whole lot of flatness.
We start with nothing. There’s a solid gap from now until the morning of Saturday, August 22nd. That’s a big blank run. You’ll see tiny, weak slop, but nothing rideable. The water is a crazy 84°F with a temperature anomaly 9°F warmer than average. That’s a massive outlier, way more than three degrees, so it’s unseasonably warm out there. Expect a bath.
On the morning of Saturday the 22nd, we finally see a pulse. It’s only 5ft from the SW with a period of 6 seconds. The energy is weak to moderate at 170. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the N, which should keep things clean. This is about as good as it gets, and it’s just ordinary. For a reef that needs specific conditions, it might be your only window.
After that, we drop back into the flat zone. There are a few mornings with tiny 3ft waves and some clean, offshore breezes, like on the 25th and 27th, but the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with. The periods are short, around 5-6 seconds, so there’s no punch. You’re just chasing ankle-biters.
For the surfers out there, this is a stretch to stay home. The setup is a reef, and with these weak, short-period swells, it’s not going to offer anything. If you’re a beginner, you don’t need to worry about getting washed away, but you also aren't going to catch a wave. For anyone else, it’s a blank. Given how inconsistent this spot is, a run like this isn't unusual, but the forecasts can change. Keep an eye on the charts, but don't hold your breath. This is Rusty, signing off.
