The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I've gotta be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf with winds that are never really on our side. The first solid recommendation doesn't show up until Tuesday afternoon, the 18th of August, and even then it's a bit of a struggle. From the 18th all the way through to the 31st of August, there's nothing that scores well enough to get me excited. It's a real lull.
The only spot with any action is Velzy Land, a reef break. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Right out of the gate on Tuesday the 18th, we've got a tiny 1.0ft WNW swell with a 13-second period. The wind is a cross-off at 16 mph, which would normally be a nice look, but the wave comment is just "poor surf conditions." The combined energy is a weak 38, so it's barely a ripple. Not the one.
Wednesday the 19th sees a similar story in the morning – 1.0ft of SW swell, but the period is a very long 16 seconds. That's a groundswell, and while it has energy, it's prone to breaking straight on a beach break. At a reef like Velzy Land, it might offer something, but with 12 mph cross-off winds and energy still under 100 (74), it's a pass. The afternoon swaps to a messy 2ft, 6-second windswell from the NE. That's a short, chunky period, not worth paddling out for.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are more of the same – tiny waves, small swell, and not enough energy to get the heart pumping. By Saturday the 22nd, there's a little bump in the afternoon with a 2ft WNW swell, a 12-second period, and the combined energy finally hits 125. That's moderate energy. The wind is cross-off at 16 mph, which keeps it clean, but the height is still well under 5ft. It's a small, clean wave, but nothing to rave about.
From Sunday the 23rd right through the end of the month, the winds pick up into the fresh breeze range (19 mph), coming from the ENE, which puts us in a cross or cross-off position. The swell heights stay tiny, between 0.3ft and 2ft. The energy dips and spikes, but nothing breaks the mold. The 1st of September brings a slight increase to 2ft from the NNW with a moderate energy reading of 132, but the wind is cross-on and choppy, which kills the quality.
If you're looking for the best of a bad bunch, I'd point you to Saturday the 22nd of August in the afternoon at Velzy Land. It's not a standout by any stretch, but it's the cleanest little window we've got. That 2ft WNW swell with a 12-second period and cross-off wind at 16 mph will be rideable for a longboard. The crowd profile says "sometimes," so you might have company, but it's a reef break, so the long-period groundswell should wrap in nicely.
Don't expect much else. If you're a kiter, those fresh cross-shore winds on the 23rd and 24th might be more interesting than paddle surfing. The second week looks just as flat and weak, with energy levels dropping back into the teens and single digits. It's a tough run, but that's the ocean for you. Forecasts can change, so keep your eye on it.
Rusty.
