The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s be straight with you. We’re looking at a pretty grim run of surf ahead. The whole 16-day window is a flat spell, no two ways about it. There’s a solid gap of poor conditions from the start, lasting right through the rest of the month and into September. The first bit of energy we see is way down the line, but even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
The only break on the cards is Velzy Land (reef). The water’s sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year.
The first hint of anything surfable shows up on Friday, the 21st of August. The morning sees a tiny 3 ft swell from the NNE, but it’s a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s pretty weak. The combined energy is a measly 95, so it’s all very weak. The wind is a light E breeze, which is cross-off and makes for clean conditions. The afternoon is similar, with 2 ft, and it’s still clean. But let’s be real, these are just ordinary waves.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, we get a mix of tiny, messy swells with strong cross-shore winds. The wind is a constant 15 to 22 mph from the ENE, just making a mess of the already non-existent waves. The swell heights are all under 3 ft, with periods all over the place, but mostly short. The wave energy is weak, reaching a max of 182 on the 23rd, but that’s with lumpy, cross-chop conditions. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
The outlook doesn’t improve much into September either. On Tuesday, the 1st of September, there’s virtually nothing – 0.3 ft of swell with a combined energy of just 3. It’s as flat as it gets.
The one stand-out, if you can call it that, is Thursday, the 3rd of September. The morning shows a 0.7 ft swell from the W, but with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s serious groundswell energy, but unfortunately, there’s just no height to it. The combined energy is a weak 34. The wind is an E breeze at 12 mph, so it’s cross-off and clean. It’s a tease, honestly. The period is so long it’ll likely break super straight, but for a reef break, the long period could actually shape up a bit if there was any size. This is a very long-range call, so take it with a grain of salt, but it’s the only thing that even remotely piques interest in the whole 16 days.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, you’re better off finding something else to do. The setup is so weak and windy that it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swells are tiny, the winds are strong, and the consistency is non-existent. It’s a blank run.
Rusty.
