The Lowdown

Rusty here, lookin’ at the surf for Ujung Genteng Harbour. This is a reef and point setup, a spot for the advanced crew, consistent, but it’s got a bit of a cross-off wind situation for most of this run. The water’s sittin’ at 81.9°, which is pretty much average for this time of year. The first swell we see is a 5.2ft SSW groundswell, but that 22 mph cross-off wind is churnin’ things up, and it’s only a 2 out of 10. The combined energy is 1215, moderate stuff. The next few days, from Tuesday the 22nd through to Saturday the 26th, are a tough stretch. The swell drops in period to 7 or 8 seconds, and the wind stays strong, 22-25 mph, cross-off. These are poor to marginal days, with the swell jumpin’ to 8.2ft, which is too big for beginners and only really for experts. The combined energy sits between 860 and 1248, still moderate. Not the clean, lined-up waves you want.

Sunday the 27th and Monday the 28th see a slight improvement, with the swell period climbin’ to 9-10 seconds, and the wind easing a bit to 12-19 mph, but it’s still cross-off. The swell is around 7.5ft to 7.9ft, and the energy is up to 1797, moderate. Still, the quality is marginal.

Now, if you’re patient, the real standout is waiting for you. Thursday the 30th of July through Friday the 31st, this is where it gets good. The swell drops to 3.6ft to 4.6ft from the SW, with a very long period of 17 to 19 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind? Glassy in the mornings, 3 mph, and the energy is strong, with 1977 and 1607. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, clean and lined up. The point break setup will handle that long period beautifully. Saturday the 1st of August is still solid, with 4.6ft SSW swell and a 16-second period, though the wind picks up to 9-16 mph.

Then, on Sunday the 2nd of August, we get a big pulse: 9.8ft from the SSW, with a 15-second period and massive energy of 3366. That’s strong, but with a 19 mph cross-off wind and a risk of thunderstorms, it’s more for the big wave chargers. The swell is over 8.2ft, so experts only. Monday and Tuesday the 5th drop back to 3.9ft-5.9ft, but the period stays long at 16-18 seconds, with moderate energy.

The real standout, the one you pencil in, is that glassy window on Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st of July. That’s your best bet for clean, long-period groundswell at a point break, with the SW direction matching the optimum. Crowds are possible, as it says “sometimes,” so just be ready for company.
