G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Ujung Genteng Harbour. This is a reef and point setup that’s built for the experienced crew – it’s consistently exposed to the swell, but don’t be fooled by the numbers. The main issue is that, for the best part of the next two weeks, the wind is going to be a real pain. It’s a constant cross-off from the SE, which will mess with the wave face, leaving it bumpy and frustrating. The combo energy is through the roof, with values like 2292 (moderate to strong energy) on the 5th and 3899 (strong energy) by the 12th, but it’s all for nothing if the wind stays onshore.
The surf is there from the start, but it’s a tough call. The real standout is going to be the afternoon of Tuesday the 16th of September. The swell is 7 ft from the SSW, with a period of 19 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell, which is gold for a point break like this, as it’ll wrap in with proper shape and power. The energy is pumping at 4011 (very strong energy). The downside? The wind is still a cross-off at 19 mph, but for this spot, that’s a better angle than the rest. It’s not glassy, but it’s the best wave of the run.
Earlier, on Tuesday the 8th of September, the morning shows 6 ft from the SSW with a period of 18 seconds, and the energy is solid at 3234 (strong energy). The wind is slightly lighter at 19 mph, but still cross-off. It’s worth a look if you can handle the chop.
The water temps are average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
If you’re not an advanced surfer, steer clear. The swell gets over 8 ft on the 13th of September (Sunday morning, 8 ft from the SSW), which is expert-only territory, and the wind is still 19 mph cross-off. That’s a heavy, messy combo.
Overall, it’s a two-week grind. The best bet is to target the 16th of September for the biggest, longest period swell, but keep your expectations in check. The wind is the enemy here.
