The Lowdown

Hey, it’s Rusty. Let’s break down what’s happening at Samudra over the next couple of weeks. It’s a classic case of plenty of ocean energy, but the wind just doesn’t want to play nice.

The water is a warm 81°F right now, which is about average for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary there.

We’ve got a solid, steady pulse of SSW swell running through the whole forecast, but nearly every session is tagged as “marginal.” That’s the key takeaway.

Monday the 7th starts us off with a 4ft south-southwest swell at 13 seconds. Wind is cross from the SSE at 9 mph, so there’s a slight chop. The energy is moderate (1044), but it’s not a day to write home about.

Tuesday the 8th is interesting but messy. Morning brings 5ft of swell with a long 18-second period, and energy jumps to (2104). That long period means nice shape, but it can make things straight at a beach break. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the south at 6 mph. The afternoon gets heavy: 8ft of swell (16-second period), with massive energy at (4204). But the wind is cross-shore from the SE at 9 mph, keeping it choppy. At 8ft, this is for experts only. Honestly, with that cross-offshore wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

From Wednesday the 9th through Monday the 14th, we’re looking at consistent swell from 5ft to 8ft, with periods of 15-16 seconds. The energy is strong, consistently in the thousands. But it’s the same sad story: persistent cross-onshore or onshore winds from the south or SSE, 3-12 mph. The mornings are often a little cleaner with lighter winds, but the waves are still lumpy. The best chance for a decent wave in this stretch is the afternoon of the 12th: 6ft swell at a very long 19 seconds with a light cross-shore wind. It’s your best shot, but still not perfect.

Into the second week, from the 15th onward, the swell size drops back a bit, from 5ft to 7ft of SSW swell. The wind pattern holds: light onshore mornings and choppier afternoons. The period drops to 14-15 seconds. The energy stays moderate to strong. No standout, clean days.

The one possible highlight is Sunday the 20th. The morning has 7ft of long-period SW swell (17 seconds) with a very light onshore breeze from the SW (3 mph). The wave energy is very strong at (2715). It’s promising for a bigger groundswell, but it’s not glassy.

Samudra is exposed to that optimum SW swell direction, so there’s always something rolling in. But the consistency here is listed as “inconsistent,” and this forecast lives up to that. It’s a real shame because the ocean is full of energy.

If you’re keen, aim for the lighter wind mornings, especially around the 12th or the 20th. But don’t expect perfection. It’s a waiting game, as usual.

Rusty.
