The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The long-range looks like we’re in for a bit of a flat, frustrating stretch, but there are a couple of windows worth keeping an eye on. The first few days are a write-off, if we're being honest. Then we get a pulse of energy, but the wind's going to be fighting us the whole way.
Right now, for Wednesday the 19th, there's some swell on the way, but it's not going to be pretty. Tropical's (Tropicals) is showing about 8ft of SW swell with an 18-second period, which is proper groundswell. The energy is strong. The problem is the southeast wind at 3 mph in the morning, which is technically offshore but super light. That could be glassy for a moment, but the surf report already calls it marginal. The water temp is 80°, which is about normal for this time of year. It's a tease, not a go-to.
Thursday the 20th is a no-go. The swell is similar, around 8ft, but the wind swings onshore from the southeast at 9-12 mph, making it choppy. The energy is still there, but it's all for nothing. This pattern holds through the weekend into next week. The swell drops a bit, but the southeast wind stays on it, creating poor, cross-onshore conditions. There's a real stretch from Thursday afternoon through to Thursday the 27th where there's just nothing for a surfer. The energy fades significantly. It’s a proper lull.
Now, here’s the interesting part. It’s a long way off, but Friday the 28th of August is showing some real promise. The swell jumps back up to about 8ft from the southwest with a 16-second period. The energy is back up. But more importantly, the wind is light from the SSE at 9 mph, which is offshore, and it's holding for the morning and afternoon. That’s a clean window. The report still says “marginal,” but the light offshore wind on a reef break like this with that kind of SW groundswell is a proper standout. It’s a weekday, and the crowds are only “sometimes” an issue, so you might get a few clean ones to yourself. This is the one to circle.
Saturday the 29th has a little left over, with about 7ft from the SSW and a light cross-on wind, but it’s not the same quality as Friday. After that, it fades out again into the start of September. There's another pulse around the 1st and 2nd of September with 8ft swells and strong energy, but the wind is on it from the southeast again, making it messy. That looks like a kiter’s day more than a surfer’s.
So, the bottom line: the next week is mostly a bust. The standout is the 28th of August. The forecast can change, and it’s a week out, so don’t book your flights yet, but that’s the one that’s got me excited.
