The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough stretch. We're looking at Tropical's (Pantai Pisin), and it's a real mixed bag. The water's sitting at a pretty standard 80°F, which is basically normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first few days are a write-off. Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are a no-go, with the swell being either too weak or just messy. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are still a struggle, with marginal conditions. The swell is starting to show up, but it's got a cross-off or cross wind that's just not letting it clean up. The energy is climbing, but it's not translating into good rideable waves.

Things start to look a little more promising around Friday the 31st. We've got a long-period 17-second swell coming in from the SSW, reaching about 4 ft. The wind drops to a gentle breeze, and it's cross-off, which is a massive improvement. The combined energy is a solid 1352 (moderate), and the waves are clean. This is the first real window of the outlook. The Saturday morning, August 1st, is also worth a look, with a light 5 ft SSW swell and almost no wind (5 km/h from the S), though it's a slight cross-on. It's still a beginner-friendly break, so it's not going to be a barrel fest, but for a clean, easy paddle, it's the best we've got in the first week.

That Saturday afternoon, the swell jumps to 6 ft and the wind picks up, so it gets choppy. The real standout for the whole period, though, is shaping up for the weekend of August 8th and 9th. We're looking at a solid 8 ft swell from the SSW with a 17-second period. That's proper groundswell, and the wave energy is massive – hitting 4128 (strong) on the Saturday morning. The problem is, the wind is a cross-shore breeze the whole time, which will put a bit of a chop on it. For a reef break, this long-period swell is perfect, but the wind will keep it from being pristine. Because it's pushing 8 ft, this is only for the experienced crew. Beginners, stay in the sand.

Overall, there's no perfect day here. The best bet is the Friday morning July 31st for clean, easy waves, or the big, powerful, but slightly choppy swells around August 8th and 9th for the experts. It's a wait-and-see game.

Rusty.
