The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at the charts for your neck of the woods, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. We've got some solid swell on the way, but the wind is going to be the main character for most of the run. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want a good steamer.
The action kicks off on Wednesday, July 15th, with some clean conditions at Trigg Point. We're looking at a 5ft swell from the WSW, with a 14-second period, so there's a bit of groundswell in there. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, which is a rare treat, making the waves clean. The combined energy is pumping at 1256 (moderate), so there's some push. It's a beginner-friendly spot, but it's often crowded, so get in early.
The next few days are a write-off. Thursday and Friday are tangled up with onshore and cross-shore winds, making things choppy and messy. Saturday, July 18th, sees a big jump in size with an 12ft swell from the WSW, but it's blowing a fresh onshore, so it's a total mess for surfing. That kind of size with onshore wind is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
We start to see a glimmer of hope again on Sunday, July 19th. The swell drops back to a more manageable 8ft, and the wind swings light, so it's not as bad, but it's still cross-onshore, so it's a bit lumpy. It's a marginal day.
The best two days of the whole run are on Thursday, July 23rd, and Friday, July 24th. Thursday morning is the standout. The swell is a solid 6ft from the WSW with a long 15-second period, and the wind is a clean, light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. The energy is good at 1589, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the day to clear your schedule.
Friday, July 24th, is also a beauty. The swell drops to 5ft, but the wind goes glassy in the afternoon. That's a rare thing, and those waves will be super clean. The crowd factor is always there, but for a glassy session, it's worth the paddle.
After that, the run for the end of the month looks rough. The wind is back on it, and while there's some size, the quality drops off. The long-range call on Thursday, July 30th, has a serious 8ft, 17-second groundswell, but the wind is a cross-shore, making it hard to read. It's a promising but less certain call at this stage.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bit of a grind, but those two days – Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th – are your best shots. Don't sleep on them.
Rusty.
