Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for us over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run coming through Trigg Point, starting off the blocks on Monday the 6th of July. The ocean is pumping a good, strong groundswell from the WSW, pushing in at a serious 7 ft with a long 16-second period. That’s a classic southwest groundswell, and it’s packing a lot of grunt—the combined energy reading is way up there (2511). For a point break like this, it’s going to be meaty, powerful, and definitely one for the experienced crew only. The wind is a clean, cross-off ESE breeze, which will keep the surface nice and tidy. Trigg Point is a fairly consistent spot, so we can count on waves, but you’ll be sharing it with a few others—crowds are often around.
The water temperature is running right around what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there, just your standard winter chill.
Monday afternoon and into Tuesday morning look even better. The swell holds around 8 ft to 8 ft, with the wind staying offshore (ESE on Monday afternoon, then light ESE on Tuesday morning). That energy climbs even higher on Monday arvo (2691). The wave faces will be clean, powerful, and pretty damn special for those who know what they’re doing. This is the standout window right here; Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning are your best bets.
Tuesday arvo the wind swings a bit more southerly and cross, dropping the quality a notch. We get a little bump in the surface, but it’s still surfable if you’re keen. Wednesday morning sees a drop in size to about 3 ft, but don’t sleep on it—the period jumps to a very long 19 seconds. For a point break, that long period can make for some beautifully drawn-out lines, even if the size is smaller. The wind is cross from the north, so not perfect, but the quality of the swell might make it worth a look.
Thursday morning the 9th is a real treat. The swell is back up to a solid 8 ft from the WSW (2231 energy), and we get glassy conditions with a whisper-light westerly breeze. That’s about as clean as it gets. The power is still high, so again, this is expert territory.
Things quieten down a bit towards the end of that first week. Friday morning the 10th sees a drop to 5 ft with a cross-off SSE breeze, clean and fun for the competent surfer. But the arvo gets chopped out by a strong SW wind. Saturday the 11th has a decent 8 ft swell coming back in, and a cross-off SS wind in the morning will give you clean, powerful lines. It’s a solid, consistent swell, but the overall quality isn’t quite as high as earlier in the week.
We then have a bit of a gap in the top-tier stuff. The second half of the second week (from around Wednesday the 15th) gets a bit messy. There is a really nice window on Sunday the 12th morning with a 7 ft, 16-second swell and a light cross-off NE wind—that’s another morning to circle, with very high energy levels (2797). Tuesday the 14th also has clean, excellent conditions both morning and afternoon with a glassy arvo session.
But hold up, the end of the run gets wild. Thursday the 16th afternoon sees a 7 ft swell, but a strong NW onshore wind will chop it up. Friday the 17th looks worse—a big NW storm swell pushing in with fresh gales and even thunderstorms. This is messy, lumpy, and honestly, it looks more like a windsurfing or kiting day than a clean paddle session. The energy is still high, but the quality is shot. That run of poor conditions carries through into the weekend.
The forecast starts to look a bit more promising again by Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, with a smaller, cleaner swell and light breezes. The energy is moderate (around 406 to 615), so it’s more of a longboard or funboard wave, but it’s a clean finish to the two-week window.
So to wrap it up: the absolute standouts are Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning (6th & 7th of July) for the big, clean groundswell, and Sunday the 12th morning for another crack at some peaky, powerful lines. Thursday the 9th morning is also a gem for the glassy conditions. Keep an eye on the long period on Wednesday the 8th for something different. The second half of the run gets a bit gnarly with wind, but there are clean windows in there if you pick your moments.
Rusty.
