Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bennion Beach Cleggies over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, let’s get into it.
We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up at Bennion Beach Cleggies. This is a reef break, and it’s an inconsistent one, so it’s not a spot that just fires all the time. When it does, though, it’s got some serious punch. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than we’re used to for this time of year, so you might want a slightly thicker suit.
The first real window of opportunity kicks off on Sunday, the 12th of July. Sunday morning is looking clean with a light, cross-off breeze from the southeast. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the SW, with a long period of 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy, coming in at 1788. That’s a moderate energy level, but the long period means it’ll have some punch. This is expert territory at that size, and the reef setup should handle the long period well. The afternoon sees the wind swing southerly and pick up a bit, making it a bit cross and less clean, but still rideable.
Monday the 13th is the standout of the whole outlook. The swell bumps up to 8 ft from the SW, and the period stretches out to a very long 17 seconds, with the combined energy hitting 2971. That’s a proper, powerful, groundswell. The morning is clean with a light cross-off breeze from the ESE. This is the best session on offer – big, clean, powerful waves for experienced surfers. The afternoon stays on the bigger side but gets a little cross-chop.
Tuesday the 14th is still good, but the swell eases to 7 ft. The wind is offshore or cross-off for both sessions, keeping it clean. The energy is still strong (1655-1652), and the period is a solid 15 seconds. A very good, long day of surfing.
On Wednesday the 15th, the swell drops to 5 ft, and while the morning is clean, the wind is a moderate 16 mph cross-off from the NNE. The energy is still moderate (1434), but the drop in size and the stiffer breeze make it less of a standout.
Thursday the 16th gets messy. The morning is already cross-chop, and the afternoon turns into a full-on cross-onshore, choppy mess. This is a weekend to sit out or look for shelter.
The following weekend gets wild, but not in a good way. Saturday the 18th sees a massive 15 ft swell from the WSW, with a combined energy in the 14,000-19,000 range. That’s a very strong, dangerous amount of energy. The wind is onshore and cross-onshore, making it a total washing machine. This is not for paddle surfing; it’s more of a kite-surfing setup if anything.
Sunday the 19th is a tease. The morning is glassy with a 10 ft swell, but it’s still too big for this reef break. The tide might be right, but the size is a major caveat.
The days that follow into the second week (Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd) are small and weak, with messy wind and chop. Nothing to get excited about.
Then Thursday the 23rd of July shows another big pulse on the charts: 12 ft from the WSW at 18 seconds, with an energy reading of 9515. That’s strong, but again, it’s likely too big for this spot for most people. The wind is light, but the size is the limiting factor.
The outlook fades out the rest of the week with dropping swell and increasing wind, culminating in strong, onshore slop by Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th.
So to sum it up: the best bet is the Monday morning the 13th. That’s your window for a serious, clean, powerful session. The Sunday morning the 12th and Tuesday the 14th are also worthy. Everything else is either too big, too small, too windy, or a combination of the three. Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
