Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the coming weeks.
The surf is coming in pulses, but we've got a few days of nothing decent at the start. The first real action kicks off on Friday, July 3rd, so we'll jump straight into that.
Friday, July 3rd is our first chance to get wet. Out at Bennion Beach Cleggies, a solid 6 ft swell from the SW is rolling in with a long 14-second period, meaning plenty of energy and shape. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 65°, about 3° cooler, so you might want a thicker spring suit. The real winner here is the glassy offshore easterly breeze – it's going to be clean as a whistle all morning. The combined wave energy is strong (1349), and while it's a bit on the bigger side for beginners, it's excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds up nicely too, with 6 ft and clean conditions.
Saturday, July 4th sees the size drop a touch to 5 ft, still with that long-period SW groundswell (16 seconds). The wind swings around to a cross-offshore from the NE, which is still clean, but the forecast is a bit more marginal. It's still surfable, but not the standout morning.
Sunday, July 5th is a write-off. The swell drops to 3 ft, period drops to 15 seconds, and the wind turns cross-shore then cross-on. Wave energy is weak (457), and the rain starts up. Leave the board in the car.
Monday, July 6th things get interesting again, but it's for experts only. The swell jumps to 8 ft in the morning, and then 10 ft in the afternoon from the WSW with a 16-second period. The combined energy is massive (3263 and 3863). The wind is clean cross-offshore, but the swell is just too big for this break. It's a proper heavy session.
Tuesday, July 7th morning is the real standout of this first week. We've got 8 ft of clean, lined-up WSW swell with a 16-second period. The wind is a light offshore from the ESE, making it glassy. The combined energy is very strong (3336). This is a serious session for experienced surfers only. The afternoon turns a bit cross-shore and gets lumpy, so get it early.
Wednesday, July 8th through Thursday, July 9th offers a mixed bag. Wednesday morning is a smaller 6 ft with cross-shore wind, but Thursday morning is another excellent window for experienced surfers, with 7 ft swell and a light offshore wind from the SSE, keeping it clean. Wave energy is moderate (1860).
Friday, July 10th the wind picks up strong from the south, making it choppy and messy. The swell is around 5 ft to 6 ft, but the wind is blowing it out. A no-go.
Saturday, July 11th is a day of two halves. The morning is a clean 4 ft with a cross-offshore breeze, but the afternoon brings a much bigger 7 ft swell from the SW with a very long 19-second period. The combined energy jumps to 3822, but the wind is a strong cross-shore, making it a lumpy, powerful, and tricky paddle.
Sunday, July 12th is another highlight. The morning kicks off with 7 ft of SW swell at 16 seconds and a light offshore breeze from the SE. Clean, powerful, and excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds at 6 ft with the same clean conditions. Wave energy is strong (2109 and 1651).
Monday, July 13th and Tuesday, July 14th are a solid run of smaller, cleaner surf. The swell drops to 5 ft - 5 ft, but the wind is offshore and light, keeping the waves clean. Wave energy is moderate (between 899 and 1191). Great for a fun, stress-free session on a longboard or a fish.
Wednesday, July 15th the wind strengthens again, making it poor for surfing. The swell is small and weak.
Thursday, July 16th looks marginal. The swell is small (3 ft to 4 ft), but the period gets very long at 18-19 seconds. The wind is cross-offshore, so it's clean, but the long period might make it break a bit straight on the beach.
Friday, July 17th is a monster day for experts only. A massive 10 ft swell from the WSW hits in the morning, with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 4222. The wind is cross-shore, making it a tough, heavy paddle. The afternoon turns to rain and a strong cross-on breeze, turning it into a complete mess.
Saturday, July 18th the swell is still big (7 ft) but the wind is onshore, making it poor and lumpy.
All in all, the best windows are the Friday, July 3rd morning, the Tuesday, July 7th morning, and the Sunday, July 12th sessions. For the long-range, the Thursday, July 16th looks clean but small, while the 17th is a massive, dangerous swell.
Rusty.
