The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table.
Alright, the only break on offer for the next two and a bit weeks is Bennion Beach Cleggies. It’s an inconsistent reef setup, and it likes the swell from the WSW, which is exactly what we’ve got coming. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
We’ve got a bit of a wait for the good stuff. The first real standout is Saturday the 22nd, first thing. It’s glassy, with a clean 6.9ft swell from the WSW, period a very long 17 seconds. That’s serious groundswell energy, and the combined energy is pumping at 2522, so it’s strong. This is proper, powerful wave energy, but it’s a reef, and the period is long, so it’ll be lining up nicely. This is for experienced surfers only, and the crowd factor can be a thing here, so get in early.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are okay but nothing special. Monday morning the 24th is glassy again with another 6.9ft, but it’s not as clean a session as Saturday.
Now, the real standout pops up on Wednesday the 26th. Look, I’ll be honest with you – that morning is pumping with an 11.5ft WSW swell and a 19-second period. That is a massive, very long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is a monstrous 18233. But, it’s blowing a 30 km/h cross-onshore wind and the forecast says poor surf conditions. It’s just too messy and too big for this spot. The afternoon is the same story with 13.1ft. This is only for experts, and even then, the wind is going to trash it. Honestly, that setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Thursday the 27th morning is a weird one. The wind is light, but the swell is 9.8ft and the forecast says it’s too big for this break. So, a miss.
Friday the 28th is a nice surprise. It’s clean with offshore winds. Morning has a clean 5.6ft with a moderate offshore breeze from the ENE, and the afternoon is gentler with 4.9ft from a light easterly offshore flow. This is very surfable, clean, and a good wave for a wider range of surfers.
The week after, from the 31st of August into September, it’s a mixed bag. Monday the 31st morning is a cracker for the experienced crew: 7.2ft, a light offshore breeze, and a combined energy of 4026. It’s clean and powerful. The next few days are mushy with cross-onshore winds, but the size stays in the 7.2ft to 7.9ft range.
The absolute best bet in the whole outlook? It has to be that Saturday morning the 22nd. Glassy conditions, a solid 6.9ft groundswell with that huge 17-second period – it’s going to be clean, powerful, and lined up. For a later option, keep an eye on the morning of the 31st of August. It’s further out, so less certain, but it promises another clean, powerful session.
That’s it from me.
