The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at what's on the cards for Bennion Beach Cleggies.
First up, the water's a bit nippy at 64°, almost two degrees colder than usual for this time of year, so a decent wetsuit is the go.
We've got a real slow start to this forecast period. Nothing doing right now, but the first real opportunity shows up on Sunday morning the 19th. It's not a classic, though. We're looking at a solid 8ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is a cross-shore from the SSW, making it a bit of a battle. The energy is massive, a whopping 2728, but it's messy. It's a reef break, so it can handle the size, but it's not the cleanest start.
The real standout for the first week is Monday morning, the 20th of July. The swell drops to a clean 5ft from the WSW, and the wind goes glassy from the east. That's about as good as it gets for conditions. The energy is moderate (822), but with those perfect conditions, it'll be worth the paddle. Keep in mind this spot is inconsistent and can be crowded, so get in early.
Tuesday morning the 21st is another solid option. A 5ft SW swell (865 energy) with a cross-offshore wind from the SE. The waves will be clean and have some shape. Then Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd keep the good times rolling with offshore winds, though the swell size drops a little to 4-5ft.
After that, the swell drops right off into the weekend, with only tiny 3-4ft waves and not enough quality to get excited about. Then Sunday the 26th brings a big, windy mess with 8ft of onshore slop, so give that a miss.
The second week has a bit of a wait. Tuesday the 28th of July looks promising again, with a 5ft SW swell and clean offshore winds from the ESE. The energy is moderate (874) and conditions will be sweet. Wednesday the 29th afternoon and Thursday the 30th afternoon also have clean offshore winds, with the Thursday offering a nice 4ft swell from the SW but with a very long 16-second period, which will make for some long lines on the reef, but be aware it might be a bit straight for the beach.
Now, the big news is Friday the 31st of July. The forecast is showing a massive 16ft swell from the west, but with a short, weak 10-second period. The energy is huge at 4658, but this is a reef break, and that size is for experts only. The wind is clean, but the sheer power will make it a heavy day.
And then it gets even bigger. The first weekend of August (1st and 2nd) is looking at colossal 20ft to 21ft swells from the WSW with very long periods (17 seconds). The energy readings are off the charts – 21733 and 20576. That is a serious groundswell. The winds are clean, but for a spot like this, that size is well beyond what most surfers can handle. It's a big, powerful, expert-only situation. After that, Monday the 3rd of August brings a messy, windy drop back to 8ft with onshore winds, so the window closes.
So, the absolute best of the 16 days? I'd have to say Monday morning the 20th of July for the glassy clean conditions and a fun size. And for a second, Tuesday the 28th of July morning is a solid runner-up with clean offshore winds and a nice 5ft SW swell. The massive stuff at the end of July and start of August is for the big wave chargers only.
Rusty, signing off.
