The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the waves for Bennion Beach Cleggies.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid pulse of groundswell lining up. The water temp is sittin’ at about 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a thicker spring suit.
The standout session is looking like Friday morning, 21 August. We’ve got a clean 8ft swell from the WSW with a 15-second period, and the wind is light and offshore from the east. The combined energy is pumping at 2535 – that’s serious, powerful stuff. This is serious wave energy, but at that size, it’s strictly for experienced surfers only. The offshore breeze will keep those faces smooth and glassy. It’s a reef break, so it needs that long period to really stand up tall. Just a heads up, this spot is inconsistent, and it can get crowded, so get there early.
Monday morning, 24 August is your next proper window. The swell drops a touch to 7ft, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a rare treat. The water will be like a mirror. The period is 14 seconds, so it’s still got plenty of grunt, and that combined energy of 1960 tells you it’s not a day to sleep in. Again, the size keeps it for the more experienced crew.
Looking further out, the forecast gets a bit messy. Thursday morning, 27 August has a solid 10ft swell from the WSW with a 16-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the SSE (combined energy 4963). The problem is, the swell is just too big for this break. The file says it’s too big, so even though the wind is good, it’s going to be a washing machine out there. Only for the absolute top-end crew if they’re feeling brave.
The tail end of the run, around Friday, 28 August and Saturday, 29 August, sees the swell drop back to a more manageable 4ft to 6ft, with clean offshore winds. The combined energy is moderate (around 759-1126), so it’ll be fun but not the heavy stuff of the first week.
There’s a big gap from the end of August through the first week of September where the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the swell is either too big or the conditions are just choppy and messy. You’ll see a period of heavy rain and strong winds around 26 August with 13ft swell and 25 mph winds—that’s a hard pass for paddle surfing. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: Friday morning, 21 August is the pick of the bunch. Get on it if you’ve got the experience. The glassy session on Monday morning, 24 August is a close second for the pure beauty of it. The rest is a bit of a gamble or just plain messy.
Rusty.
