The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for us.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The main action is at Bennion Beach Cleggies, a reef setup that’s fairly exposed to the WSW. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
The first real sniff of decent surf hits Friday afternoon, August 21st. We’re looking at a clean 8ft WSW swell with a 14-second period. That’s a meaty groundswell with plenty of energy behind it (2338). The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SSE, so the face should be clean. But at this size, it’s for experienced crew only – this reef will be proper powerful. This is a standout window for those who know what they’re doing.
The action continues into Saturday morning, August 22nd. Another solid 7ft WSW swell, even longer period at 17 seconds, and the energy is amped up (2522). With a light NE breeze, it’ll be glassy and clean. Another cracker for the experienced surfer.
Sunday morning the 23rd drops off a bit – a smaller 5ft swell and cross-shore wind, so it gets a bit scrappy. The real gem of the whole forecast pops up on Monday morning, August 24th. The wind goes dead calm, glassy conditions, and we’ve got a 7ft WSW groundswell. That’s a best-of-the-run moment right there. The energy is strong (1848), and you’ll be surfing offshore conditions with no wind. Absolute magic.
After that, things get a bit messy. A big pulse on August 26th hits 13ft with a 19-second period, but it’s accompanied by strong cross-onshore winds and rain. That’s too big and blown out for a clean paddle session – honestly, that’s more of a kitesurfing day here.
There’s a bit of a lull in quality through the end of August, with cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions, but then another clean window opens on Friday morning, August 28th. A 6ft WSW swell with a light offshore from the ESE. Nice and clean, though the swell is a bit weaker (972). A fun option for a quieter session.
September 1st shows promise with a clean 7ft WSW swell on Tuesday morning, light offshore vibes, and strong energy (2271). That’s another one to circle for experienced surfers.
We then move into a more consistent but slightly less perfect pattern. The next real standout is Friday morning, September 4th. A 7ft WSW groundswell with a 16-second period, steady offshore wind from the east, and huge energy (3177). That’s shaping up to be a banger, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
The last few days of the run show a trade-off between big swell and dirty wind, but the morning of September 5th still has a 7ft WSW with a fresh offshore, so there’ll be waves.
Bottom line: the absolute best windows are Monday, August 24th morning for the glass, and Friday, September 4th morning for the power and clean offshore. Don’t sleep on those.
Stay salty,
Rusty.
