Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s cooking on the swell front. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag, but there are definitely some sessions to get excited about if you know where to go.
The surf window kicks off Friday, July 3rd, and the standout early call is Bennion Beach Cleggies first thing. This is a reef break, and it’s gonna be pumping with a solid 6 ft SW groundswell. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a thicker suit. The big draw is the light offshore breeze from the east keeping things glassy and clean. There’s a lot of power in the water with a combined energy of 1349, so the sets will have some grunt. With a period of 14 seconds, the waves will have nice shape, but that longer gap between sets means you can pick your moment to paddle out. This is excellent for experienced surfers only – 6 ft is getting a bit too hefty for the beginners.
Friday afternoon holds up nicely too, with the swell dropping slightly to 6 ft but still clean under that same offshore wind. A good option for a second sesh.
The forecast for Saturday the 4th is a step down. Swell drops to 5 ft with a long 16-second groundswell, but the wind swings to a side-offshore breeze. It’s still rideable and clean, but the energy drops noticeably. The tide could be a bit tricky. It’s a marginal call.
Sunday the 5th is a write-off. The swell is down to 3 ft and the wind goes onshore, making for poor, choppy conditions. Give it a miss.
Now here’s a big one: Monday the 6th. The morning sees a rapid jump in swell to 8 ft from the WSW, and it builds to a whopping 10 ft by the afternoon. With the combined energy hitting 3530, that’s some serious juice. However, the wind is side-offshore, not directly offshore, and at those sizes on a reef, it’s a warning. The models are saying this might just be too big for the break to handle cleanly. Unless you’re a top-tier charger, it might be one to watch from the sand.
Tuesday the 7th is where the whole period peaks. Morning session is the absolute pick of the litter. You’ve got a strong 8 ft WSW groundswell (combined energy 3693) with a light offshore from the ESE. That’s a recipe for perfection. It’s going to be clean, powerful, and well-shaped. Definitely one for the experienced crew only – a solid 8 ft on a reef is no joke. The afternoon lightens up to 8 ft but the wind goes side-offshore, still good, but the morning is the real stand-out.
We then get a string of good, consistent days through to the second week. Wednesday the 8th remains excellent in the morning with 5 ft on a clean side-offshore breeze. Thursday the 9th holds at 7 ft with light cross-off winds, another excellent morning for experienced surfers.
By Friday the 10th, the swell starts to back off to 5 ft. The morning has light winds and clean conditions – a very good option for intermediate surfers looking for a less demanding wave than the previous days. The weekend of the 11th is smaller again, around 4 ft, but clean. It’s a good option for a longboard or a funboard.
Looking into the second week, the outlook gets frisky again. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th both offer 5 ft to 6 ft SW groundswell with moderate offshore winds. That’s a solid, clean session with decent energy (around 1400-1800). Tuesday the 14th will see a slight shift in direction with 6 ft WSW swell, still with moderate offshore winds and clean conditions.
Things get dicey from the 15th onward. The swell drops off, and we see a return of strong onshore winds and even a big, messy swell spike on the 17th and 18th. The 18th of July shows a massive 16 ft swell from the WSW, but with a strong onshore wind and a combined energy of 9249. That’s just a huge, dangerous, messy mess. Kite surfers might be frothing, but for a paddle surfer, especially at a reef break, it is a hard pass.
So to sum it up, the absolute peak is Tuesday morning, July 7th. That is your golden ticket for a powerful, clean, offshore session. The rest of the first week has plenty of good options for the experienced surfer, and the first half of the second week offers some quality, consistent swell. After the 15th, it’s looking like a gap with a few poor days, before a massive, unsurfable swell to end the period.
Stay stoked, and I’ll see you in the water.
Rusty.
