The Lowdown

Righto, let’s have a look at the only game in town for the next couple of weeks – Bennion Beach Cleggies. It’s a reef setup, fairly exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent, so don’t expect waves every time you paddle out. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – you’ll want that extra layer, mate.

For the first week, it’s a rough start. Monday the 17th is a write-off – strong cross-onshore winds at 25 mph and messy 7 ft swell. That’s a big no-go. The next couple of days see a massive pulse of swell, hitting 13 ft on Tuesday the 18th, but that’s just too big for this break. Even with favourable wind and tide on Tuesday morning (light WNW cross-on at 6 mph), the combined energy is a massive 7293 – it’s powerful stuff, but you’d need a death wish. Same story Wednesday and Thursday mornings: clean glassy conditions on Thursday the 20th morning with a WSW 10 ft swell at 16 seconds and glassy wind, but again, too big. The break is getting hammered.

The first real standout comes on Friday the 21st morning. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8 ft from the WSW, period at 15 seconds, and the wind goes glassy from the ESE at 3 mph. The wave comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and with a combined energy of 2207, it’s got plenty of grunt. This is a good one – clean, powerful reef waves if you’ve got the skill. The long period means it’ll be walling up nicely, but expect some bigger sets and longer lulls.

Saturday the 22nd morning is another window. Swell at 7 ft from the WSW, 17-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell. Wind is light NNE cross-off at 6 mph, making for clean faces. Combined energy is 3279. This is the pick of the run, but that long period will make it a bit straight at a beach break – here at a reef, it’s actually a bonus. Still, it’s only for experienced crew.

After that, things get marginal. Sunday the 23rd morning is okay but not great. From Monday the 24th through to the 30th, most sessions are blown out or messy, with onshore winds and poor conditions. There are a couple of half-decent windows – like Thursday the 27th morning with a light SSE cross-off, 6 ft swell, clean – but nothing that gets the heart racing.

The second week is pretty quiet. The only nod goes to Friday the 28th afternoon: glassy, 7 ft swell at 16 seconds, combined energy 1997, and the comment says excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a solid session if you can wait for it, but don’t get too attached – it’s a long way off and forecasts can shuffle.

For the absolute best on offer, I’m pointing at Saturday the 22nd morning. That 7 ft WSW groundswell with a 17-second period and light cross-off wind is the cleanest, most powerful wave in the window. Get on it if you can handle the size. Friday the 21st morning is a close second. Everything else is either too big, too windy, or too marginal to bother with.

Rusty.
