The Lowdown

Alright, listen up. Let's talk about Bennion Beach Cleggies. This reef is about to get hammered, but in a good way.

The whole 16-day window is ruled by a massive, consistent west-southwest swell. The water temp is 64°F, which is a bit chillier than average for this time of year, so a wetsuit is a good call.

The first real action hits on Wednesday the 19th. The morning is a wash with rain showers and a 5 km/h WNW wind, with 8ft of swell from the WSW at 15 seconds. The energy is already pumping. But it’s the Wednesday afternoon that’s the real alarm bell. The wind goes light cross-on from the WSW at 10 km/h, and the swell jumps to 10ft at 15 seconds. The energy is off the charts. This is huge, powerful, and for the experts only.

Thursday the 20th morning is a glassy dream. 5 km/h from the SE, 10ft of long-period WSW groundswell at 16 seconds. It’s as clean as it gets, but that size is a beast. This is a top-shelf window for the brave. The afternoon turns into a choppy mess with a 20 km/h S wind.

Friday the 21st morning is another standout. Pure offshore from the E at 10 km/h, with a still-sizeable 8ft of WSW swell at 15 seconds. This is clean, powerful, and will be a rippable session for the experienced.

The weekend is a washout. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are all cross and cross-on winds, turning the big swell into a mess.

Monday the 24th morning brings a clean offshore (ENE 10 km/h) with 7ft of WSW swell at 14 seconds. It’s a solid, clean session.

The mid-week is poor. Tuesday the 25th is small, and Wednesday the 26th morning sees a monster 12ft WSW swell at 17 seconds, with energy going through the roof, but the wind is 15 km/h from the S. That’s too big for this reef, and the wind is rotten; it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle one.

The second week shapes up again. Thursday the 27th is a cracker. Morning sees 20 km/h offshore from the ESE, 8ft of WSW swell at 15 seconds. This is clean, powerful, and for the experts. The afternoon is even better, with 15 km/h offshore and 8ft swell. This is a top pick in the second week.

Friday the 28th is all about offshore wind again, but the swell drops to 4ft, so it’s smaller but clean. The real standout in the second half is Sunday the 30th morning. The swell is 5ft, but the period is a very long 20 seconds, and the energy is solid. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNE. This is a beautiful, long-period groundswell that will line up perfectly on the reef. It’s a promising session, but the long period might make it a bit straight at some spots, but for this reef, it’s a dream.

The rest of the period into September is a mix of solid 7ft to 8ft swell, but winds are often cross or cross-on, keeping it from being perfect. The standouts are the Wednesday 19th afternoon, Thursday 20th morning, Friday 21st morning, Thursday 27th, and Sunday 30th morning. The best of the best? I’d be on the water Thursday 20th morning for the glass, and Thursday 27th morning for the clean offshore power.

Rusty.
