The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the forecast for one spot – Bennion Beach Cleggies. It’s a reef break, and it’s an inconsistent one, so it needs a lot of the right pieces to fall into place. Let’s break it down.
Right now, we’re starting with a bit of a blank. There’s no good surf on offer for the first couple of days. Friday afternoon the 17th sees a 5ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore and it’s lumpy, so that’s a write-off. Saturday the 18th gets a big pulse of 13ft from the WSW, but it’s way too big for this reef, and the wind is still on it. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
The first real sign of life comes on Sunday morning, the 19th. We’ve got a clean 8ft swell from the WSW with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. That’s a solid, powerful groundswell with a period of 14 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (2689). This is for experienced surfers only – it’s too big for beginners. The wave quality is there, and it’s clean.
Monday the 20th is a real standout. The morning session is glassy with a 5ft WSW swell, and the wind is dead calm from the NE. That’s why we surf. The combined energy is moderate (822), but the conditions are perfect. This is the best on offer for the whole run. The waves will be clean and easy to read.
Tuesday morning the 21st isn’t bad either. A 5ft SSW swell, clean with a light cross-off wind, and the energy is moderate (835). It’s a good follow-up to Monday. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd keep the pattern going with clean mornings and 5-5ft swell from the SW, but the afternoon wind tends to mess it up. The crowds here are often an issue, so if you can get out early, you’ll beat the pack.
The 24th to the 25th are smaller, around 4-5ft, with glassy mornings. It’s not epic, but it’s clean and fun for a longboard or a fish.
Now, look at the 26th of July – Sunday morning. A 6ft swell from the west, clean, with a light cross-off. That’s a nice size, and the energy is strong (1556). This is another one to mark on the calendar. The 27th is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds and messy 8ft surf.
The 28th of July Tuesday morning is a dark horse. Glassy conditions, 6ft from the SW, and moderate energy (1224). That’s a clean, punchy wave. After that, the 29th and 30th go back to being poor with strong onshore wind and lumpy conditions.
The very end of the run, on the 1st of August, gets a massive 16ft swell from the WSW. The combined energy is extreme (14218). That’s a monster, but it’s way too big for this reef – it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one. The afternoon has a window where the wind backs off a bit, but it’s still enormous.
So, the standout is Monday morning the 20th of July – glassy, clean, and a great size. The Sunday the 19th and the 26th of July mornings are also top picks for stronger surfers. The gaps are short, but this spot is inconsistent, so it’s a game of picking the right tide and the right morning.
Rusty out.
