The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’m lookin’ at Bennion Beach Cleggies. This is a reef set-up, and the water’s sittin’ at 63°, which is a bit cooler than we’d expect this time of year – a full two and a half degrees colder than the norm. That’s notable, so you’ll want a thicker suit.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but the tale of the tape is that this break is inconsistent, and the biggest waves are gonna be too much for it. The real standout energy is built around a very long-period groundswell from the WSW.
First up, Wednesday the 19th in the afternoon. It’s clear, but we’ve got a light cross-onshore breeze. The swell is a massive 10 ft from the WSW, with a period of 15 seconds. The combined energy is a meaty 4068, which is very strong. Problem is, the wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s a pass for paddling, but a hell of a sight.
Thursday morning the 20th is the real gem. Glassy conditions, a 3 mph southeasterly, and that same 10 ft, 16-second swell. The energy is 4242. Again, the comment says it’s too big. For a standard surfer, you’re better off watching. But for a very experienced crew on the right boards, this is a window. The period is super long, so this groundswell will wrap and hold shape, but it’s heading straight for the reef. It’s a rare, standout session for the absolute top tier.
Friday morning the 21st, we get a clean 8 ft of WSW swell, period 15 seconds, and offshore winds from the east at 6 mph. The energy is 2535. This is excellent for experienced surfers – the comment says it straight. The wind is clean, the swell is big but not monstrous, and the long period means power. This is the best bet for someone who really knows what they’re doing.
Saturday morning the 22nd, it’s cloudy with a cross-offshore breeze. The swell drops to 7 ft, but the period pushes to 17 seconds. Energy is 2522. Clean conditions again. Another good call for the experienced crew.
By Sunday the 23rd, the swell is fading fast. The morning is 5 ft with a 14-second period, but the wind is swinging to a moderate cross-shore. It’s marginal. The afternoon gets worse with a fresh cross-shore and lumpy 4 ft. The run of good surf is over.
Monday the 24th morning is a real highlight. Clean, offshore easterly wind at 3 mph, with a 7 ft, 14-second swell. The energy is 1538. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is a solid, cleaner session than the weekend.
The week then fades. Tuesday the 25th morning is clean but small at 4 ft, and by Tuesday afternoon it’s a 2 ft onshore chop. Poor.
Wednesday the 26th morning sees a massive pulse: 10 ft, 18-second period, energy of 5768. Again, too big for the break. The afternoon is even bigger at 12 ft and choppy. Kite surfers might be happier here.
Thursday the 27th morning has a 8 ft, 16-second swell with a cross-offshore wind, but it’s marginal. The afternoon is a lumpy mess.
The next few days are small and weak. Friday the 28th is clean but tiny at 4 ft. Saturday the 29th is 2 ft with a 22-second period – that’s a long wait for a tiny wave. Sunday the 30th picks up again to 7 ft, but with a cross-onshore wind.
The real standout for the second week is Monday the 31st of August morning. Clean, light cross-offshore wind, 7 ft of WSW swell at 17 seconds. Energy is 2507. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is a promising day, but it’s a week away, so don’t bank on it just yet.
Tuesday the 1st of September is onshore and messy. Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a clean 7 ft with offshore easterly winds at 6 mph. Good conditions for the experienced crowd. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is a 10 ft, 16-second swell, but again, it’s flagged as too big for the break.
The best of the lot is the Thursday morning from the 20th, if you’re an expert, and the Friday the 21st and Monday the 31st mornings for cleaner, experienced-level surf. The crowds are said to be often here, so expect company on the good days.
Rusty.
