The Lowdown
Alright, listen up, crew. Rusty here with the word on the water for our local spot. We're only looking at one break: Bennion Beach Cleggies. It's a reef, so it's a bit of a specialist wave. It doesn't break often, and when it does, it can get busy. The water's about normal for this time of year.
We've got a bit of a slow start. The first real action is on Monday the 24th of August. We've got a solid 7ft groundswell from the WSW, with a very long 14-second period, packing a ton of energy (1933). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SE at 3 mph, so it'll be glassy. This is a standout for the experienced crew – the wave energy is strong, and the conditions will be excellent. Just remember, that long period can make beach breaks a bit tricky, but for a reef, it's a dream.
Monday afternoon the swell eases to 6ft, but the wind goes onshore. Forget it.
Tuesday the 25th is a total loss. Strong cross-onshore winds and chop. Don't even bother.
Wednesday the 26th, the swell jumps to a massive 12ft to 13ft, with a very long period from the WSW. The wave energy is extreme (8999). But this is way too big for this break, and the wind is onshore or cross. This is for experts only, and even then, it's a gamble. For the rest of us, it's a kite-surfing day.
Thursday the 27th morning gives us a 10ft swell with light cross-offshore winds keeping it clean. But again, it's too big for the break. The afternoon gets messy with strong crosswinds.
Now, here's a real winner. Friday the 28th of August, morning. The swell drops to a more manageable 6ft, still with a decent 13-second period from the WSW. Wave energy is moderate (1023). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ESE at 6 mph, keeping it clean. This is looking like very good surf. The crowd will be a factor, but for a clean, lined-up reef break, this is the best of the week.
Saturday the 29th is a mixed bag. The morning is tiny at 3ft, but with a clean offshore wind. The afternoon, though, is a beauty. A 6ft swell from the WSW, with a long 16-second period, and a gentle offshore wind from the ENE. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The wave energy is moderate (1858). This is another top pick.
From Sunday the 30th onward, things get more iffy. The swell holds around 7ft to 8ft, but the wind is often cross-on or onshore, leaving the surf messy. We see a pattern of moderate cross-shore chop and ripples. There are a few cleaner windows, like Monday the 31st morning with a cross-offshore wind, but the scores are lower.
Looking way ahead to Saturday the 5th of September, the swell jumps back up to 10ft, with glassy conditions in the morning. But again, it's too big for the break. The following week, from Sunday the 6th to Tuesday the 8th, features big swell (8ft to 12ft) and strong offshore winds, which would be epic at a more exposed spot, but for Bennion Beach Cleggies, it's just too much. The wave energy is very strong (over 3000). For experts only, if they're feeling brave.
So, to sum it up: the best windows are the mornings of Friday the 28th and the afternoon of Saturday the 29th of August. That's where the conditions, swell, and wind line up for a proper session. The rest of the forecast is a mix of too big, too windy, or just marginal. Keep your eyes on those two windows.
Rusty, signing off.
