The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch. The only spot in the frame is Tandjung-Lefts, and it’s not looking great. The whole forecast is dominated by a persistent cross-onshore wind, mostly from the ESE, that just won’t let up. The water is a warm 81°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The surf starts with a bit of a pulse on Tuesday morning, July 14th. We’re seeing a 6ft southwest groundswell rolling in with a very long period of 17 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 2115. But here’s the kicker – the wind is cross-onshore at 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. The comments say "poor surf conditions" and the score is a zero. This is a consistent, advanced reef break, and it’s exposed to the south, which is the right direction, but the wind is just ruining it. That long period groundswell would be better suited to a point or river, but it’s breaking too straight here.
The swell sticks around into Wednesday morning, July 15th, still 6ft but with a 16-second period, and the energy is a bit lower at 1981. Still, that same cross-onshore wind is blowing at 12 mph, so it’s marginal at best. By Thursday, July 16th, the swell drops to 5ft, and the whole thing goes downhill from there. From Thursday through to the end of July, the swell height bounces between 3ft and 7ft, but every single day has that cross-onshore wind, mostly 12-16 mph, and the comments are all "poor surf conditions" with scores of zero. It’s a grim run.
There’s a slight tease on July 20th (Monday) where the swell picks up to 7ft with a 17-second period and energy of 2325, but again, the wind kills it. That’s a solid size for more experienced surfers, but with the wind, it’s just a washing machine. On July 25th (Saturday), the swell drops to 3ft, and even though it has a long 17-second period, the energy is 744, which is weak, and the wind is still cross-onshore. On July 28th (Tuesday), the wind eases to 9 mph, and the swell is 3ft with a 19-second period, but it’s still cross-onshore and the comments say "marginal" at best.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the Tuesday morning, July 14th pulse. It’s the biggest and most energetic swell of the whole period, but it’s not clean. If the wind was offshore, this would be a classic. As it is, it’s only for the most dedicated who don’t mind chop. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at this break, so you might have some company, but with conditions this poor, it might be quiet.
For the rest of the 16 days, there’s a gap of continuous poor conditions from July 16th right through to July 29th. There’s no real window of clean surf. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup with strong cross-onshore winds and decent swell might actually be more interesting than paddle surfing. But for a normal surf, it’s a hard pass.
Stay patient, mate. The forecasts can change, but as it stands, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
