Sun Rider (Mar del Plata) Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, it’s Rusty. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you: it’s a pretty bleak run for Sun Rider. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing but small, dribbly, and often messy conditions. The only real light at the end of the tunnel is a couple of days around the 9th and 11th, but even those are gonna take some working.

The first week is a total write-off. From Wednesday the 5th through to Saturday the 8th, we’re looking at tiny swell, with most of it coming from the SE. The energy is weak, barely cracking 100 (102) on Wednesday, then dropping off to nothing (32, 26). Winds are all over the shop too, with a lot of cross-onshore junk, so it’s not even going to be a fun paddle. Forget the board, maybe just bring a beach chair. We’re stuck in this grovel zone until the action finally starts to build.

Now, Sunday the 9th is where things get interesting. The swell pulses up to 7ft from the SSW, with the period stretching to 10 seconds, and the energy numbers just blow up to 723 in the morning. That’s a solid jump. The wind is cross-offshore and the surf looks clean. It’s still a bit lumpy, but this is the first real window. Then the afternoon push is even bigger, hitting 8ft and a reading of 1317, but the period drops to 9 seconds. It’s going to be powerful and punchy. This is the standout of the whole run, but it’s big enough that it’ll be pushing it for anyone who isn’t solid. The water’s running about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The early part of the next week on Monday the 10th is still workable, but it’s fading. 5ft in the morning from the SSW, but the wind is a bit cross-off and it’s clean. The afternoon turns cross-onshore and choppy, so the morning is the window. But then Tuesday the 11th, that’s when the second real stand-out happens. The swell drops to 4-5ft, but the period jumps to a very long 12 seconds from the SSE. That’s proper groundswell energy, with combined readings in the 700s. This looks like the best shape of the whole period. The light wind keeps it clean, though it’s a bit cross-shore. It will be hollow and lined-up, but with that long period, it might be breaking a little straight at the beach. It’ll be a busy one, too, because this is the one everyone will be circling.

From Wednesday the 12th onward, it just gets messy and fades away again. Long-period leftovers but onshore winds and rain just kill it. By Friday the 14th, we finally get glassy conditions and a bit of a drop, but the swell is under 3ft. The days after are a write-off, with strong winds and poor surf. The second week really has nothing to offer. Even the weekend of the 19th-20th has a bit of a spike, but the period is short and the wind is messy.

So there you have it. Your best bet is the midday push on Sunday the 9th if you’re keen for some size, but for the real quality, you want to be out there early on Tuesday the 11th. Everything else is just a paddle.
