The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Spanish Point has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a proper struggle. We’re looking at a long dry spell with very little to get excited about. From Monday the 13th right through to late on the 21st, the surf is tiny and the conditions are mostly ordinary. There’s a lot of days with poor surf and scores that tell you to stay home. The wave heights are hovering around 1ft to 2ft, and even when the wind is offshore, the energy is just not there.
The first real sign of life comes on Tuesday the 21st in the morning. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the west, with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the first time we see clean, surfable conditions after a long gap. The combined energy is still weak at 90, so it’s tiny, but it’s a start.
The best window in the whole outlook is Wednesday the 22nd in the morning. We get a 3ft west swell with a 9-second period and a light offshore breeze from the ESE. The combined energy hits 167, which is moderate energy, and the conditions are clean. This is the pick of the period—small but clean, and at Spanish Point, a reef and point setup, that west swell with offshore wind will produce some fun little waves. It’s the only real window for a decent session.
The water temperature is sitting at 62°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
After that, we get a few more small pulses, but the wind turns messy. By the 28th, the swell pushes up to 5ft to 5ft from the WSW, and the combined energy jumps to 322 and 433, which is strong energy. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore and fresh, so it’s going to be lumpy and blown out. That 5ft+ size also means it’s getting into the territory where it’s only for the experienced crew, and with that onshore wind, it’s not going to be pretty.
Honestly, if you’re keen, the Wednesday morning of the 22nd is your best bet. There’s a long gap before that, and after it, the quality drops again. It’s not a classic forecast, but that one morning could be a nice little session.
Rusty.
