Table - best surf conditions forecast for Spanish Point over the next 16 days.
Alright, mate, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for the imperial crew.
You’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch at Spanish Point. The first bit of surf worth talking about is Thursday afternoon, July 9th, but it’s nothing to write home about. A 4ft west swell with a 9-second period, but the wind is onshore from the west at 10 km/h. The combined energy is 224 (moderate), but the conditions are just marginal. The water’s at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The one window that might get you out of bed is Friday morning, July 10th. The swell drops to 3ft from the west-northwest, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it some decent shape. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north-northeast at 10 km/h, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is 241 (moderate). It’s not a standout, but it’s the best on offer. After that, it’s a long stretch of nothing. From Saturday, July 11th, through to Thursday, July 16th, the swell is tiny—between 0.6ft and 2ft—with periods all over the place. The wind is mostly offshore or glassy, but there’s just no push. The energy drops to single digits and low double digits (weak), so it’s a total write-off.
Then, from Friday, July 17th, the swell tries to build again, but the wind swings hard onshore from the northwest. By Sunday, July 19th, the swell hits 6ft from the west-northwest with an 8-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 384 (strong). But with a strong breeze blowing at 25 mph, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy, cross-onshore disaster. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The same story continues: plenty of swell energy (often in the 300-400 range) but always with a cross-onshore or onshore wind.
For a reef and point break that likes a west swell, the direction is right, but the wind is the enemy. The crowds are only sometimes an issue, but nobody will be out there in these conditions. If you’re desperate, Friday morning, July 10th, is the one to check, but keep your hopes low. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
