The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are going to be a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got some solid swell on the horizon, but the wind is going to be the main story for most of it, and not in a good way. Let’s break it down.
Right now, and for the next few days, it’s pretty grim at Spanish Point. That first window we look at is Monday the 17th through to about Sunday the 23rd of August. The wind is just howling out of the southwest and west, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, blowing at 15 to 22 mph. That’s going to trash the surface completely. We’re looking at lumpy, choppy, poor surf conditions. The swell is there – it builds from a weak 4 ft (70 combined energy) on Monday to a chunky 8 ft (1,318 combined energy) by Wednesday – but with that wind, it’s a write-off for a proper surf. Honestly, for a beach and reef setup like this, with that much wind and size, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit, but that’s about the only good news.
There’s a real lull from Friday the 21st of August through to Monday the 24th of August. Swell drops right off to a tiny 1.0 ft, with hardly any energy. The wind does ease up and even goes cross-offshore at times, making it clean, but there’s just no wave to ride. It’s a flat spell, so don’t bother paddling out.
Then, from Monday the 24th afternoon, the swell starts to kick back in, but so does the wind. We see a pulse to 5 ft (506 combined energy) that afternoon, but it’s cross-on and choppy again. The pattern continues through the end of August and into the 31st – building swell but constantly hammered by onshore and cross-onshore winds from the west and southwest. By the 31st, we’re looking at a massive 12 ft to 13 ft swell (2,459 to 3,604 combined energy), which is purely for experts, but with a fresh breeze blowing onshore, it’s going to be a stormy, dangerous mess.
Now, here’s the real standout, and it’s a long way off. On Tuesday the 1st of September, things finally align. We’ve got a huge 13 ft west swell rolling in, with a long period of 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell with serious energy (5,136 combined energy). The kicker is the wind: it’s light and offshore from the east at just 6 mph, turning to a light cross-offshore in the afternoon. That’s going to make for clean, powerful waves at Spanish Point. The only problem? The swell is so big that it’s predicted to be too big for this break, even for the advanced crew. It’s going to be a heavy, surging beast. If you’re an expert who knows this reef and point setup, it could be the session of the month, but it’s a long-range call, so don’t book the time off just yet. For everyone else, it’s a day to watch from the rocks.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are mostly blown out or flat. The only real chance of something special is that Tuesday the 1st of September, but it’s for experts only and a long way out.
