G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's take a good, hard look at what's coming up for Spanish Point over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow starter and then things get weird.
Right off the bat, Spanish Point is a reef and point setup that needs a good W swell and offshore E winds to really shine. It's an advanced wave, and it can get crowded sometimes. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
For the first week, from Monday the 6th through to Sunday the 12th, it’s pretty grim. We've got a persistent run of westerly swell coming in around the 3 ft to 4 ft mark, but those winds are all over the place from the WSW and W. That means constant onshore and cross-onshore slop, making for poor surf conditions day after day. It’s just choppy and messy, a real write-off.
Things finally go clean from the 11th, but the swell drops right out. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th see NE cross-off winds cleaning things up, but the waves shrink to a tiny 1 ft to 2 ft (combined energy of 19 to 82). It’s glassy, but too small to get excited about.
Monday the 13th brings some gentle offshore E and ENE winds, but the swell hits rock bottom at 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft. You’d be floating. Tuesday the 14th is similar – clean with moderate offshore E winds, but only 2 ft to 2 ft of W swell (combined energy around 60 to 87). It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but ordinary at best.
Then there’s a bit of a tease. On Thursday the 16th, we see a spike in the afternoon: a 4 ft WSW swell rolls in with clean cross-off winds, and the combined energy jumps to 268. That’s a decent little pulse, but the system says the conditions are still poor, which is a head-scratcher. I’d keep an eye on it.
The best bet by a long, long way, comes on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. But here’s the rub – it’s for experts only. We’re looking at a massive W swell: 8 ft on Monday and a solid 10 ft on Tuesday. The combined energy is huge – 1146 on Monday morning and blasting up to 1767 by Tuesday afternoon. The winds go glassy with gentle offshore breezes from E and ENE. The forecast outright says the swell is too big for this break, and with that kind of size on a reef, you’d want your wits about you. It’s a proper big-wave session for the brave.
So, the standout is that big pulse on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st – huge, clean, and powerful, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The rest of the fortnight is mostly small, clean slop or poor, choppy conditions.
Rusty.
