Right then, folks, let’s get into what’s on offer here at Spanish Point. I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is looking pretty quiet for the most part. We’ve got a lot of small, weak surf and not much quality to get excited about. There’s a big gap of nothing much worthwhile from now through to nearly the last week. But hold on, there is one standout that might just be worth waiting for.

First up, the early part of the spell is a real struggle. From Sunday the 12th right through to the morning of Monday the 21st, we’re looking at tiny waves – mostly ankle to knee-high, between 0.7ft and 3ft. The energy is weak, barely registering, with combined swell energy readings mostly under 100 (20 to 108). The winds are often clean, with some nice offshore or glassy moments, like the dead calm on Wednesday afternoon the 15th. But with next to no swell, it’s just not surfable. It’s one of those frustrating periods where the conditions look tidy but there’s nothing to ride. You could maybe get out on a longboard for a few tiny ones on Tuesday the 14th afternoon with a 2ft west swell and offshore east wind, but it’ll be ordinary.

Then we get a bit more juice from Monday the 20th afternoon through the 22nd, with swell climbing to 4ft and energy jumping up into the hundreds (307). But there’s a catch – the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore from the northwest, making for choppy, messy conditions. Not the best, but if you’re desperate for some chop-hop, you might find something on Monday afternoon the 20th.

Now, for the real highlight. Mark your calendar for Thursday morning, the 23rd of July. That’s the window. We’ve got a solid 5ft west swell rolling in, with a combined swell energy of 317 – moderate to strong energy. The morning is looking clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the east-northeast at just 3 mph. That’s the sort of setup that makes Spanish Point (Clare) come alive. The water temp is sitting at 61°F, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so a few degrees above normal, nice. Now, this is an advanced break, so smaller waves aren't great, but 5ft can offer some decent lines. It’s a reef and point set-up exposed to west swells, perfect for that west-northwest direction we're seeing. It can get crowded sometimes, so get in early. This is the one to aim for.

After that, it gets tricky again. Friday the 24th has an onshore west wind messing things up, and Saturday the 25th brings stronger winds. The later part of the window on Monday the 27th sees the swell pump up, with the afternoon showing a big 8ft west-southwest swell and a massive 973 combined energy. That’s powerful, but the wind is light cross-onshore. At that size, this spot gets real heavy and is strictly for experts only. Could be a wild mission if you’ve got the skills, but it’s borderline too big for the break.

So overall, a long, flat start with a short, clean window on the 23rd morning being your best bet. Don't expect much else.

Rusty.
