The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's shaping up for Spanish Point.

Look, straight up, it's a tough run ahead. We've got a long stretch of small, junky waves and messy winds that just won't let up. The water's a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 63°, so that's something, but you'll be doing more floating than riding for the first week.

Starting Saturday the 22nd, it's flat. Tiny 1ft swell from the WSW with barely any energy (42) and a light cross-off breeze. It's clean, but there's nothing to surf. That same tiny, poor-quality pattern hangs around right through to the next Friday. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th show a tiny pulse, but it's not worth the paddle.

Now, Tuesday the 25th morning is the first time things get interesting, but only just. We get a 3ft swell from the west with moderate energy (140) and clean offshore easterly winds at 15 mph. It's surfable, but the period is short at 9 seconds, so the waves won't have much push. It's a "maybe" session.

The real kicker comes on Friday the 28th morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW, and the energy jumps to a solid moderate (237). Problem is, that's all from a short-period 7-second windswell, and the wind is howling cross-onshore at 19 mph in the afternoon. It'll be a lumpy, choppy mess. Not good for a paddle board, but that cross-onshore blow and the swell setup might make it more interesting for the kite crew.

We then get a whole lot of nothing for days. The winds are strong and onshore, the swell direction is all over the place, and the surf quality is just poor.

The one standout, and I mean the *only* one worth marking on your calendar, is Saturday the 5th of September. Now, this is far out, so take it with a grain of salt, but it looks promising. We're expecting a solid 7ft groundswell from the west with a long 11-second period and very strong wave energy (1096). The wind is forecast to be a clean cross-offshore from the SSE at 22 mph. The waves will be clean, powerful, and have good shape. But here's the catch: that 7ft of long-period west swell is going to be big and powerful at this exposed reef and point. This is strictly for the experts. Beginners, stay well clear, this one is dangerous.

Before that, on Thursday the 4th of September morning, the models are showing a huge 10ft west swell with monstrous energy (1441), but it's coupled with strong onshore winds, making it a complete write-off for surfing.

So, to sum it up: you're looking at a week of tiny, weak surf with one borderline day on Tuesday the 25th. Then a long gap of onshore slop. The only real shot at something special is that Saturday the 5th of September, but it's a big, powerful swell for experienced surfers only. Keep an eye on that date, but don't hold your breath for the rest.
