The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what’s on the table for Spanish Point. This is a reef and point setup, exposed to the west, which means it needs a good westerly swell to light up. It’s a spot for the advanced crew, and it’s fairly consistent, but the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and messy.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf from Friday the 21st right through until Sunday the 23rd. Tiny waves, mostly under 2 ft, with cross-shore or onshore winds and low energy – the combined swell energy is barely reaching 75 (weak). It’s a write-off for those days.
Monday the 24th of August morning shows a bit of life. A clean, offshore ESE wind at 9 mph, with a 3 ft WNW swell, period 11 seconds. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, and the energy bumps to 159 (moderate). This is the first real standout. The offshore wind will keep it glassy and clean, but because it’s a long-period swell, it might break a bit straight at this beach, but on a point and reef like Spanish Point, it should line up nicely. It’s still small, but for the advanced surfer, this is the best of the lot early on. Crowds are possible here.
The rest of the week is patchy. Tuesday the 25th has a fresh offshore breeze but the swell drops to 2 ft with only 87 energy (weak) – not worth the paddle. Wednesday the 26th is similar with light rain and small, ordinary waves. Thursday the 27th afternoon actually pulls a 2 out of 10 with a 3 ft W swell, 10-second period, and a moderate offshore ESE wind, with energy at 202 (moderate). That’s clean and surfable, but still small.
Then Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th, the swell picks up but the wind turns onshore and strong. Friday morning sees 5 ft but cross-on NW wind, making it choppy and poor. Saturday the 29th morning has a 8 ft W swell, which is big, but with a 16 mph onshore wind, it’s a mess – only for experts, and even then, it’s ugly. The energy is 895 (strong), but the quality is zero. This setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The final week into September is a flat, windy mess. From Sunday the 30th evening through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s all under 3 ft, mostly onshore, with energy dropping to single digits. The only glimmer is Saturday the 5th of September morning: a glassy 3 ft WSW swell, with 75 energy (weak), and clean conditions. It’s a small, clean option for a longboard or a fun fish, but nothing to get excited about.
Honestly, the standout is Monday the 24th of August morning for the clean offshore conditions and that long-period groundswell, and maybe Thursday the 27th afternoon for a similar clean window. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat run with a few windy, blown-out days.
