The Lowdown

Alright, mates, Rusty here again, but this time in feet and Fahrenheit. It’s been a flat start at Spanish Point, and I’m not gonna lie – the first few days are a total bust. There’s a dry gap right through the weekend, with the first real chance coming on Monday the 24th.

That Monday morning, we get a little pulse. A WNW swell at 2ft, but with a long 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind’s offshore from the ESE at 20 km/h, so it’s clean. The energy is moderate (143). You’ll be scratching for little corners, but it’s rideable. Not a standout, but a start.

The real standout is Wednesday the 26th, morning session. That’s the one. We’ve got a 4ft west swell, an 11-second period, and light offshore winds from the ESE at only 10 km/h. The combined energy jumps to 322 (moderate), and the conditions are clean. Expect good surf. That light offshore wind will make for some proper lines on this reef and point setup. This is the pick of the whole forecast.

After that, it’s a mixed bag. Saturday morning the 29th is glassy with a 5ft west swell – clean as glass, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a little fat. The energy is moderate (253).

Then things get heavy. The 31st (Monday) and the 30th (Sunday afternoon) see solid swell over 8ft. The 31st morning has a 10ft west swell with offshore winds from the NE, but it’s flagged as too big for this break. This is serious power and will be a washing machine. Experts only, and even then, it’s hairy. The swell energy is massive (2097). Later on the 30th, an 12ft west swell with cross-onshore winds will be a total mess – more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.

The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.

Crowds at Spanish Point are *sometimes* an issue, so on that good Wednesday morning, you might see a few others paddling out, but it’s not a zoo.

So, bottom line: pencil in Wednesday the 26th morning. That’s your window. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too big for this spot. Keep your eyes peeled.

Rusty.
