The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Sagami River stretch.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long dry spell to start. From Thursday the 16th right through the 25th, there’s hardly a ripple worth mentioning. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1.6 ft, coming from a jumbled mix of south and southeast directions with periods all over the shop, mostly short and weak. The combined wave energy is feeble, barely cracking 20 or 30 (weak) for most of that time. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. You’re better off finding a different hobby for that first week and a half.
Then, around Sunday the 26th, we finally see a pulse. The morning swell bumps up to 1.6 ft from the SE, but the energy is still weak (107). The afternoon shows a bit more promise with 2.6 ft from the SSE and a period of 13 seconds, giving a moderate energy reading of 269. Still, the forecast calls it poor surf conditions. It’s not until Monday the 27th that we get something sniffable. The morning brings 3.3 ft from the SSE at 11 seconds (energy 382 – moderate), but the wind is onshore. It’s marginal, maybe a wave for a longboard if you’re desperate.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Tuesday the 28th. The morning shows 4.3 ft from the SSW at 12 seconds (energy 511 – moderate to strong). The wind is light cross-onshore from the ESE, so it’s not clean, but it’s the best we’ll get. The afternoon holds similar 3.9 ft SSW swell. For a beginner spot like Sagami River, 4.3 ft is on the bigger side, so it’s a bit much for the groms. The swell direction is from the SSW, which is off the optimum SE direction for this beach/jetty setup, so the shape won’t be perfect. It’s a beach break, so with a 12-second period, it won’t be too straight, but it’s still a bit lumpy.
The water temp is sitting at 76.6°F, which is just 1.1°F below the norm for this time of year, so nothing unusual – a nice warm day out.
After that, it fades again into the 29th, 30th, and 31st with dropping swell and increasing onshore winds. That Tuesday the 28th is your only real window, and it’s a marginal one at best. For a setup like this, it’s a pretty poor run. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath.
