The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We've got a solid stretch coming up at Ram5, a point break for the advanced crew. The water's sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 63°, so that's a nice little bonus.
The pattern starts off with a bit of a slow cooker on Thursday the 16th. The morning's a bit weak with a 4ft SW swell and a light breeze, not much to write home about. But Thursday afternoon is where it gets interesting – the wind drops to glassy, zero, and the swell cleans up to 3ft from the SW. It's small, but that glassy surface will have it looking like a mirror. The combined energy is moderate at 223.
Friday the 17th keeps the vibe going. The morning is tiny at 2ft, but the wind is light offshore. The real standout is Friday afternoon: a 4ft swell from the WSW, 11-second period, and glassy conditions. That's clean, lined-up point surf, and the energy is a solid 498. This is likely the best session of the early run.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a mixed bag. Saturday has cross and cross-onshore winds with 4ft swell, so it'll be a bit bumpy. Sunday takes a step up in size – 5ft in the morning, but with a cross-onshore. The afternoon of the 19th, however, is another cracker: 5ft from the WSW, 12-second period, and glassy winds from the NE. The energy is strong at 566 and the conditions will be very good.
Now, Monday the 20th sees a jump in size. The morning has a 7ft swell from the WSW with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is a powerful 1648. That's a big, grunty point swell, but it's coming with a cross-onshore wind. This is expert territory. The afternoon is similar, 7ft, but with cross-shore winds. It's going to be a heavy, challenging day.
From Tuesday the 21st through to Thursday the 23rd, the swell drops back to the 4ft to 5ft range, but the winds turn mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the quality fades. The combined energy moderates, and the conditions get a bit choppy. Not the best window.
Friday the 24th sees a slight improvement with a 4ft SW swell and 11-second period, but it's still cross-shore. The energy is moderate at 503.
Then we go into a bit of a lull. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are very small, with swell dropping to 2ft. However, Saturday afternoon has a weird, super-long 21-second period groundswell, and it's glassy. The energy is 333, which is moderate for that size. It'll be a novelty, long-period wave, but it's tiny. Sunday the 26th is similar with a 19-second period, but it's cross-shore.
The next real highlight comes on Tuesday the 28th afternoon. We get a 5ft swell from the WSW, a 13-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is a strong 876, and it's expected to be very good.
Wednesday the 29th is a big one. The morning has a 6ft swell from the WSW with a 13-second period, and a light cross-onshore. The energy is high at 1117. But the afternoon of the 29th is the standout of the entire outlook: 5ft from the WSW, 13-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is 783, and it's set to be very good. This is the one.
The final days round out strong. Thursday the 30th morning is glassy with a 5ft SW swell, 13-second period, and energy of 886 – another very good session. Friday the 31st holds solid, with a 6ft to 6ft SW swell, 13-second period, and moderate energy.
Overall, the best windows are Friday afternoon the 17th, Sunday afternoon the 19th, and the absolute winner is Wednesday afternoon the 29th. That late July window looks prime. Crowds are possible at Ram5, so get there early for the clean ones.
Rusty.
