The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you—this outlook for Pontal (Baia Formosa) is a tough one. The finder's given us a big fat zero for the whole 16-day window, and honestly, the guidance confirms it's a pretty grim run.

We're looking at a stretch from now through to the 21st of August with no real surf to speak of. The swell's tiny, mostly under 3 feet, and when it does bump up a little, the wind's a mess—cross-shore, cross-onshore, choppy as hell. There's a few mornings around the 11th and 12th where the wind goes clean and cross-offshore, but the swell's barely a knee-high bump, so it's not worth paddling out for.

The first real pulse of energy comes in around the 9th of August, Sunday morning, with a 4-foot easterly swell and moderate energy (325), but it's getting hammered by a cross-onshore wind from the east at 12 mph, so it's choppy and messy. That's the best we've got, and it's still poor. The swell direction is east, which is a good match for the optimum north swell direction here—not ideal, but it's what we've got.

Later in the second week, around the 20th and 21st of August, the swell picks up a bit to 5 feet from the east, with energy climbing to 220-231 (moderate), but the wind's still cross-shore and the period's short at 7 seconds. It's not going to be clean, and it's not going to be good. This spot is a reef and point, so it's not a total write-off for a kite session if you're into that, but for a paddle surfer? Forget it.

So, bottom line: there's nothing worth getting excited about here. The whole 16-day forecast is a blank. This area tends to have these quiet runs, so it's not unusual, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. Hold tight, the forecasts can change, but for now, don't bother waxing up.
