The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the lowdown on the surf for the next couple of weeks. Let's get into it.

Well, mate, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a tough stretch. The forecast is looking pretty flat and uninspiring. We're looking at a long gap of tiny, low-quality waves right through the first week and a half. The only break on the radar is Ocean Beach Jetty, and even then, it's a struggle.

Monday the 3rd kicks things off with a tiny 2ft, 13-second swell from the SW. The water is a warm 75°, which feels much warmer than normal for this time of year, a real anomaly. But the problem is the conditions. The wind is onshore from the WNW, and the combined wave energy is weak (188). It's a write-off.

This pattern hangs in for days. Tuesday the 4th, Wednesday the 5th, Thursday the 6th – it's all the same story. Knee-high dribble with onshore and cross-onshore winds. The combined energy stays in the 130 to 225 range, and the wave comment is "poor surf conditions" every time. It's not worth paddling out for.

The weekend of the 10th and 11th doesn't offer any relief. The swell is still 2ft, and the wind is still a cross-onshore breeze. The energy picks up a bit, hitting 289 to 357, but it's still too messy to get excited about.

We finally see a glimmer of hope later in the second week. By Sunday the 16th, the swell is still only 3ft, but the period is dropping to 15 seconds. The wind is still cross-onshore, keeping things messy. The standout moment, if you can call it that, is on Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th. The swell is small at 2ft to 3ft, but the wind finally goes light offshore from the WSW and W. The combined energy is weak (233), but the conditions are "marginal" rather than outright poor. There's a tiny window for a clean, small wave paddle on a longboard. It's not going to be epic, but it might be the only chance for a wave that isn't completely blown out.

Overall, the only real option is Ocean Beach Jetty, and it's a long shot. The best bet is to keep an eye on that Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th for a small, clean window. Otherwise, it's time to find something else to do.

Rusty.
