The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for Non Nuoc over this 16-day stretch, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a quiet spell. We’re looking at a long gap of flat, weak conditions right through from now until the final days of July and into August, where things finally start to show a little life.
For the first week and a half, from Saturday 18 July right through to late July, we’ve got tiny, weak swell coming in from the ESE and E. Mostly around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with short periods of just 4 to 5 seconds. There’s barely any energy in the water – it’s down in the single digits and low teens. These are not surfing waves; they’re barely even bumpy. The wind is okay at times – we get some clean, glassy mornings on the 22nd and 25th – but with no swell to work with, it’s just a flat lake. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
There’s a big gap with no real surf on offer until we hit the morning of Wednesday 29 July. That morning we see a touch more pulse: 1 ft from the ENE, but with a very long period of 18 seconds. This is a groundswell, and the energy is still weak, but the period is interesting – it could bend around. The morning wind is onshore though, so it’s messy.
Then on Thursday 30 July, we get our first real standout window. That morning brings 1 ft of ENE groundswell with a period of 14 seconds. The combined energy bumps up to a moderate level. But the real treat is the wind – glassy, from the NNW at 3 mph. This is the cleanest forecast of the whole run. The waves are surfable, but ordinary – still small, and the very long period means it might break a bit straight on this sandbar setup. For a confident surfer, this is the one to target.
Friday 31 July morning is another decent shout. Swell picks up a notch to 2 ft from the ENE, period still a healthy 14 seconds, and the combined energy is strong. You’ve got a gentle offshore wind from the SW at 9 mph, making for clean conditions. Still small but better shape and more push. This is the pick of the bunch if you can only get out once. Crowds are possible here at Non Nuoc, so you might have some company.
Into Saturday 1 August morning, it drops back to 1 ft ENE, 13-second period, offshore light breeze – clean but very weak energy. Still surfable for a longboard or a patient soul.
After that, Sunday 2 August morning goes flat again – 0.3 ft, glassy, but nothing to ride.
Bottom line: the first week and a half is a washout. The second week offers two or three windows of small but clean, long-period groundswell. The best bet is the morning of Friday 31 July for the biggest, cleanest waves of the outlook. Don’t expect barrels, but if you’re jonesing for a paddle, that’s your moment.
Rusty.
