The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Right, let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Non Nuoc is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, long stretch of pretty much nothing worthwhile for a solid week and a half. The water’s sitting at about 87°, which is about average for this time of year, so that’s one thing going for us, but it’s not much comfort when the waves are flat.
From Wednesday the 19th right through to the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August, it’s a total write-off. We’ve got tiny swell – mostly under 2ft – with short, weak periods and combined wave energy barely cracking triple digits (mostly between 5 and 65). The wind’s often offshore, but it’s just not enough swell to matter. You’d be floating on a lake. This stretch is a solid 8 days of basically no surf.
Now, finally, a glimmer. Things start to show a pulse from Thursday the 27th of August afternoon. The swell comes from the ENE, around 2ft, with a period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy jumps to 279 (moderate), and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the WNW. It’s clean, but the size is still tiny. Not a day for the quiver, but you might get a few knee-high runners.
The standout window is Friday the 28th of August. Morning sees light offshore winds from the WSW, 3ft ENE swell at 15 seconds, and combined energy of 295 (moderate). By the afternoon, the wind drops to glassy – just 3 mph from the SW – and the swell holds at 3ft from the ENE at 16 seconds, with energy still solid at 279. This is the best the period offers. It’s small, but glassy and clean, with that long-period groundswell wrapping in. For a mellow longboard session, it’s your call. The break is a sandbar, so longer-period swells like this can sometimes be a bit straight, but with those winds, it’s worth a paddle.
After that, Saturday the 29th of August morning has a bit of leftover 2ft ENE swell at 14 seconds, but it’s messy by afternoon and then we’re back to flat, poor conditions through to the 3rd of September. Nothing else stands out.
So, bottom line: wait for Friday the 28th of August. That’s your one true standout. Glassy, tiny, but clean. Everything else is a long, blank run.
Rusty.
