The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a grim stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. We’re looking at a solid run of flat, gutless conditions with hardly anything to get excited about. From now all the way through to the end of the month, the waves are tiny, the energy is pathetic, and the wind is never quite right. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, no sneaky session to look forward to.
The first recommendation is for Non Nuoc on the morning of Thursday, July 16, but it’s a real letdown. Swell is a measly 1ft from the SE, with a short, weak period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 14 (weak). The morning wind is offshore from the WSW at 9 mph, which is clean, but the waves are just too small and poor to bother. Thursday afternoon sees the wind swing onshore, making it even worse.
From there, it’s a long, flat slog. Friday, July 17 through the end of the month, the swell stays below 1ft, mostly from the ESE or ENE, with periods between 3 and 10 seconds. The energy readings are all in the double digits, usually under 20, although there’s a slight bump on the 28th and 29th of July when the period stretches to 17–19 seconds and the energy climbs to 78 and 72 respectively. But even then, the swell height is only 1.0–1ft, and the wind is cross-onshore, creating choppy, messy conditions. The waves are just too weak and sloppy to ride properly.
The only bright spot is a couple of glassy mornings on the 23rd and 31st of July, but the swell is so small—1.0ft and 0.3ft—that it’s barely a ripple. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Given the persistent lack of quality, the weak energy, and the wrong wind directions, this setup is more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. For anyone looking to get wet, I’d say give it a miss. The good news is that Non Nuoc is fairly consistent, so this blank run is unusual, and forecasts can change. But for now, there’s nothing on the table.
Rusty.
