The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Non Nuoc over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it’s a tough stretch. The prevailing wind is mostly offshore through the mornings, which is a positive, but the swell simply isn't showing up. The combined wave energy is very weak, barely scratching double digits most days (values around 6 to 12). We’re looking at tiny, short-period windswell – think knee-high at best, with periods of just 6 or 7 seconds. That means weak, choppy little waves with no push behind them. Honestly, for the entire 16-day outlook, there’s not a single session I’d call a standout or even a "go." It’s all rated as poor surf conditions. Water temperature is sitting at 86°F, which is about average for the time of year, so you won’t need a wetsuit, just a lot of patience.
The first dawn patrol worth mentioning is on Tuesday, July 14th. We’re starting right away with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the ESE at 7 seconds. The morning is clean with a gentle offshore breeze from the SW, and the energy is only 9. It's dribbly, but if you’re on a log, you might scratch into something. The afternoon shifts to an onshore NE breeze, turning it to mush.
Wednesday the 15th sees a slight bump. The morning shows 1ft from the SE at 6 seconds with a moderate offshore (energy 12). The afternoon is cleaner with a light WSW offshore but drops back to 0.7ft. Still tiny. This pattern repeats for days. Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th… all mornings with light to moderate offshore wind but minuscule surf (0.7ft to 1.0ft). The energy levels are stuck in the low single digits. This is a long, flat stretch.
Around Wednesday, July 22nd, there’s another hint of life. The forecast shows 1ft from the SE at 6 seconds, and a gentle offshore in the morning (energy 12). Thursday the 23rd has the same 1ft SE swell with a gentle offshore (energy 12 again). It’s still far from good, but it’s the most consistent tiny wave we’ll see. By the final days, the swell period drops to 4 seconds on Sunday, July 26th, which is essentially flat, though the morning is glassy with clear skies – pretty to look at, useless to surf. The last few days show a long-period (15-second) groundswell on the 28th, but it’s only a pathetic 0.3ft and paired with onshore or cross-onshore winds. A 15-second period with no height just means you’ll see the ocean move but not break.
Given the persistent tiny swell and the lack of any significant wave energy (consistently below 20), this setup is a real bummer for a surfer. There is simply no good surf on offer in this entire 16-day window. The sandbar at Non Nuoc needs a proper pulse of swell to work, and it’s just not coming. Keep your board in the car just in case a rogue set rolls through, but I’d be looking at other hobbies for a while.
Rusty.
