The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Non Nuoc.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, weak swells day after day. Those early mornings and afternoons from Thursday the 20th right through to Tuesday the 25th are all small stuff – mostly 0.3ft to 1ft with periods under 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is pitiful, barely pushing past 20 or 30 (44). The wind is offshore, which is about the only nice thing you can say, but there’s just no power in the water. It’s a frustrating start.
Now, things start to get interesting on Wednesday the 26th of August. A real groundswell shows up. We’re looking at 2ft to 3ft from the ENE, with a period that jumps to 19 seconds, dropping to 18 seconds later. That’s proper long-period energy. The combined energy for Wednesday morning is 345 (moderate) and it bumps up to 379 (moderate) in the afternoon. The wind stays offshore – a gentle to moderate breeze from the SW. This will be clean and have some proper push, especially for a sandbar break like Non Nuoc. Keep in mind, with a period that long at a beach, the sets might break a bit straight, but it’s the only real show in town.
Thursday the 27th still has some life in it. The morning sees 2ft from the ENE with a 15-second period – still solid groundswell. The combined energy is 201 (moderate) and the wind is a gentle offshore from the SW. The afternoon drops off a bit with a 14-second period and the wind swings to the west, still offshore but the energy drops to 199. It’s surfable, but it's on the way out.
After that, it’s a long, slow fade. From Friday the 28th all the way through to that final Friday on the 4th of September, the size drops back to 0.3ft to 2ft, with periods getting shorter again. There are a few windows with clean conditions and light winds, like Thursday the 3rd morning (1ft at 14 seconds from the ENE) and Friday the 4th morning (2ft at 15 seconds from the ENE), but the energy is weak and the scores are low.
Water temp is sitting at 86°F for the start of the period. That’s 1°F warmer than normal, so it’s just a touch toastier than average for late August – nothing major, just a nice warm bath.
The standout here is clear: Wednesday the 26th of August. That’s your session. The combination of clean offshore wind and that long-period ENE groundswell with moderate energy is the only thing worth paddling out for. Thursday morning the 27th is a decent backup. Everything else is a flat spell or tiny junk.
This is Rusty, signing off.
