The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Look, I’m gonna level with ya – we’ve got a pretty grim stretch ahead here at Non Nuoc. The next couple of weeks are mostly flat or close to it, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The water’s sitting at a warm 86°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothin’ unusual there.
Starting from Thursday the 16th of July right through until Wednesday the 30th, it’s a long, sorry run of tiny, weak swell – we’re talkin’ 0.3ft to 1ft from the east-southeast or northeast most days, with periods mostly between 4 and 10 seconds. The combined energy is pitiful, never cracking 100 (like 11, 10, 8), so there’s just no push. Winds are offshore or glassy on plenty of mornings, which would be a plus if there was any swell, but there isn’t. It’s just too small to surf. Even Thursday the 23rd to Saturday the 26th stays flat and crossed-up.
Now, there’s a tiny glimmer right at the tail end. On Wednesday the 29th, the morning shows a 0.7ft swell from the east-northeast with a 15-second period and combined energy of 27. That’s still weak, but the longer period hints at a bit more shape. Then on Thursday the 30th, we finally get a hint of “surfable” conditions – 2ft from the east-northeast, 12-second period, and the energy bumps to 92. With offshore southwest winds and clean conditions, it’s the best we’ll see, but honestly, it’s still tiny and ordinary. Rips won’t be an issue, but don’t expect much.
Overall, there’s nothing worth getting excited about until Thursday the 30th, and even then it’s a marginal knee-high dribbler. If you’re desperate, that’s your window, but I’d keep the hopes low. It’s a long, flat run – but it won’t stay poor forever, forecasts can change.
