The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Nam O Point over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a lean stretch. For the first week, from now through the end of August, the swell is tiny and the energy is just flat. We’re looking at weak little waves, mostly under 3 ft, with combined energy readings that are almost all in the double digits – like 23, 35, 41 (weak energy). The water temp is sitting at a warm 86°F, which is about typical for this time of year, but honestly, that’s the only thing that’s comfortable. The wind is good on some days – glassy or light offshore – but there’s just no swell to work with. You’ll be staring at a lake.
The first real flicker of life comes on Wednesday, August 26th. We get a jump in period to 18 or 19 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell – and the combined energy climbs to 221 and 380 (moderate wave energy). Swell direction is from the ENE, which is straight out of the optimum direction for Nam O Point. The swell height is small, only about 2 ft to 3 ft, but with that long period and clean offshore winds from the SW, the waves will have shape. Wednesday morning looks the cleanest with a gentle offshore. This is your best bet for the whole window, but it’s still a small-wave day for the experienced guys.
Thursday the 27th morning is also worth a mention. Glassy conditions, 2 ft from the ENE with a 15-second period, and combined energy at 210 (moderate). Again, small but clean.
Then it goes quiet again. The rest of the first week and into the start of September is mostly tiny, weak, and unrideable. We have a gap of several days with no real recommendations.
The only other standout is way out on Thursday, September 3rd. The afternoon brings a sudden spike: 6 ft from the NW, 8-second period, and combined energy of 490 (strong wave energy). Wind is offshore from the W at 12 mph. This is the biggest swell of the whole forecast, but it’s a short-period wind swell, and 6 ft is getting into the range where it’s only for the more experienced surfers, especially if it gets a bit lumpy. Worth a look if you’re keen, but it’s a long way off so keep an eye on the forecasts.
For the rest of the time, honestly, you’re better off finding something else to do. The break is consistent, but the swell just isn’t there.
Rusty.
