The Lowdown
Righto, let's have a look at what’s on offer for Nam O Point over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this isn’t going to be a week of epic tales. The opening days are pretty quiet.
Actually, there’s nothing worthwhile at all for the first several days. We’re talking dead flat or just messy little dribbles from the 20th right through until the morning of the 26th. That’s nearly a full week of staring at a lake. The water temp is sitting around 87°, which is about normal for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
The first time things get interesting is around Wednesday the 26th. We’ve got a pulse of swell arriving, coming out of the ENE. It’s a real groundswell with a long period of 19 seconds, but the size is small, only about 2ft – 3ft. Don't let the small height fool you; that energy reading is up at 345 and then 379 (moderate energy), which means there's some push behind it. The wind is light and offshore from the WSW, so it’ll be clean. This is the best on offer, but it's really for logs or a fun little longboard. Because of that very long period, the waves might peel a bit straight at a beach setup, but at this size, it should be fine.
Thursday the 27th morning is a standout moment. Glassy conditions – absolute perfection on the surface – with a light offshore from the SW. The swell drops a touch to 2ft, still from the ENE, with a long period of 15 seconds. The energy is still moderate at 201. This is your best chance for a truly clean session. The crowds here are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it shouldn’t be a zoo. The afternoon gets a bit choppier with a cross-offshore wind.
After that, it’s a slow fizzle. We get a couple of days of small, poor surf, then a bit of a re-appearance around the 4th of September. Friday the 4th of September afternoon looks promising again. The swell is back up to 2ft from the ENE, with a very long period of 15 seconds and a solid energy reading of 205 (moderate). It’s glassy again, which is a huge tick. This is another one to mark on the calendar, but because it’s over a week away, treat it as a nice rumour rather than a guarantee.
In between, there are a few “surfable” days (like the 2nd and 3rd of September) with glassy mornings and tiny waist-high waves – fine for a paddle, but nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: This is a slow, sleepy outlook. The only two real standouts are the morning of Thursday the 27th of August and the afternoon of Friday the 4th of September. Both offer clean, glassy conditions and some long-period groundswell.
Stay patient.
