The Lowdown

Alright, let's get into it. This is Rusty.

Right now, it’s a bit of a waiting game. We’ve got a solid stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions ahead. The good news is there’s a pulse of energy building for later in the period, and if you’re patient, there’s a proper little window of clean surf on the way.

We start off with a pretty lean run. From Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through to the morning of Wednesday the 26th, it’s frankly poor. We’re talking tiny, weak waves with hardly any energy behind them, often glassy but completely lacking any punch. The combined swell energy is barely scraping double digits, like 20 or 15, which is weak as dishwater. You’d be better off with a boogie board. The water temp is sitting at a warm 87°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll be a nice swim.

Then, around Wednesday the 26th of August, things start to flicker. The morning shows a jump in energy, with combined swell energy hitting 325 – that’s moderate, finally got some life. We’re looking at a 2ft swell from the ENE with a very long period of 20 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. That long period means better-shaped, more powerful waves, but at Nam O Point, a beach/jetty setup, that long period can make things a bit straight and walled. Still, with a light offshore breeze from the WSW, the morning session is going to be clean. The afternoon gets a bit bigger, pushing 3ft from the same direction, but the wind swings onshore from the NE and it gets messy.

Thursday the 27th of August morning is another standout. You’ve got a 3ft swell from the ENE, still a decent 15-second period, with a light offshore breeze. The combined energy is 270, so moderate, and the conditions will be clean. This is a solid, surfable window. The afternoon gets blown out again, though.

Friday the 28th drops right back off into the doldrums. The rest of the month and into the start of September is a wasteland of tiny, weak swell and onshore or cross-off winds. The combined energy values are mostly in the teens. It’s a proper flat spell.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Looking ahead to the first week of September, we see a real shift. Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon shows a bump to 4ft from the NNW, period of 6 seconds, but the wind is offshore from the WSW. The energy is up to 130, so moderate. It’s surfable.

But the real highlight of this whole outlook is Saturday the 5th of September. That morning, we’ve got a 2ft swell from the ENE, but the period is a very long 18 seconds, and the combined energy is 539. That’s strong energy. This is the big one. The wind is a light offshore from the WSW, promising glassy, clean conditions. The forecast is for very good surf. This is the session to circle on the calendar. The afternoon holds well too, with glassy conditions and solid energy.

Sunday the 6th of September still has some leftover energy, but the wind turns cross-onshore and the quality drops.

So, to sum it up: the next week and a half is mostly a write-off for decent waves. The best bets are the clean, offshore mornings on the 26th and 27th of August for some fun, smaller waves. But the absolute standout, the one that gets the heart rate up, is the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. Mark it down. Just remember, it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it. This is Rusty.
