The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
First off, the full 16-day window is looking pretty grim for Nam O Point. This is a beginner-friendly beach/jetty setup that's exposed to the NE, and it's consistent, but we just aren't getting any love from the ocean. The water is sitting at 87°F which is about normal for this time of year.
The first week is a write-off. From Tuesday the 18th right through to Thursday the 27th, we're talking tiny, gutless surf with combined wave energy rarely breaking past 100 (mostly in the single digits and teens). The wind is mostly light and offshore, which would normally be a dream, but with swell heights floating between 0.3 ft and 2 ft, there's just nothing to ride. It's a tough stretch – even the 2 ft push on Friday morning the 21st only managed a combined energy of 53 (weak), and the conditions were still described as "surfable but very ordinary." You'd be better off doing something else.
Then, after a solid week of nothing, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. On Friday the 28th of August, the ocean finally wakes up. Swell jumps to 2 ft in the morning, building to 3 ft by the afternoon, all from the optimum ENE direction. The period is a very long 16 seconds, dropping to 15 seconds. This is a proper groundswell – plenty of energy behind it, with a combined energy of 203 (moderate) on Friday morning and 276 (moderate) by Friday afternoon. Wind is offshore and light, making for clean conditions. The only thing to keep in mind is that a long period swell like this can break a bit straight at a beach break, so it might not be as perfect as a point, but it's far and away the best we've got. Saturday the 29th morning holds on with 3 ft at 14 seconds and 239 energy, but it starts to fade from there.
The standout play is Friday the 28th of August. The afternoon looks best with that 3 ft ENE swell, offshore wind, and glassy conditions. It's a beginner break, so the size is manageable, and the crowds are only "sometimes" an issue, so you might get a few fun ones without a battle. Just be aware that with such a long period, the sets will have longer gaps, making paddling out easier, but the waves might be a bit walled up on the beach. Saturday morning the 29th is a solid backup with similar size and good wind.
After that, the following week (Sunday 30th through Wednesday 2nd September) fades back into marginal conditions. The swell drops to 1 ft, and the energy falls back below 100. There's still some glassy mornings and light offshore winds, but it's just not enough to get excited about. The 1st of September has a brief tease with 2 ft ENE swell and 151 energy, but it's glassy with no wind, and the description is "surfable but very ordinary."
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total bust. The standout is a short window from Friday 28th to Saturday 29th of August, with Friday afternoon being the best pick. It's a solid call for a beginner-friendly spot, but keep your expectations in check for the rest of the period.
Rusty.
