The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s doing for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. There’s no real swell of note to get excited about. The first few days have some small, wobbly waves, but the quality is just not there. Nothing is really worth paddling out for until about the 9th of August.

### Natural Bridges State Beach

The first real flicker of life shows up on Sunday, the 9th of August. The morning is still pretty meh, but by the afternoon, we finally see a modest pulse of WNW swell pushing in at 4ft with a 10-second period. The combined swell energy is a moderate 515, so there’s a bit of push behind it. The wind is light and cross-shore, which means the surface will be clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.

The next day, Monday the 10th of August, looks a touch better. Morning sees a 4ft WNW swell, still with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 557. The wind is a light cross-onshore, but it’s such a light breeze (6 mph) that it won’t mess it up too much. The afternoon drops a little but holds at 4ft with cleaner wind. This is probably the pick of the whole outlook. It’s a reef break, so it needs a bit of size to work, and while it’s not huge, it’s the most consistent energy we get. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

If you’re a beginner, this swell is under 5ft, so it’s manageable, but the break is an advanced reef, so know your limits. The crowds can be an issue here, often there, so expect company.

The rest of the outlook after that fades back into the small stuff. A couple of pulses of long-period SSW groundswell show up, with periods of 16-19 seconds, but the swell height is tiny (1ft to 3ft). That long-period energy will just roll through without much to show for it at a sheltered spot like this. It’s a very long wait for a knee-high wave.

Overall, it’s a lean run. If you’ve got a longboard and low expectations, the 9th into the 10th of August is your window. Otherwise, it’s a lot of flat and marginal conditions.

Rusty.
