The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this 16-day run for Mitchell’s Cove is a tough stretch. There are no true standout days where everything clicks, and the forecast is littered with poor surf conditions and marginal calls. The best we’ve got is a handful of mornings that might just be worth a look if you’re desperate, but expect a lot of ordinary.
The first decent window pops up on Monday 14th September in the morning. Swell bumps up to 5 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s clean. The combined energy is moderate at 304. This is about as good as it gets. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 62°, about 3° above average. The offshore direction for Mitchell’s Cove is NE, so this WNW swell isn’t perfectly aligned with that optimum direction, but the glass makes it surfable. This break is a reef and point, sheltered, and it’s advanced only. Crowds are often around, so you won’t have it to yourself. For experts only.
Then we skip to Tuesday 22nd September in the morning. Another glassy morning. Swell is 5 ft from the WNW, 9-second period, moderate energy (311). Same story—ordinary but rideable. The wind is light from the S, glassy. This is your other chance, but again, don’t expect much.
Beyond that, the rest of the 16 days is a write-off. Winds switch onshore or cross-on, swell drops or gets choppy, and the conditions are poor. There’s a gap from the 15th through the 21st with nothing worth getting wet for, then another gap from the 23rd right through to the 27th.
If you’re a kite surfer, the bigger wind afternoons with cross-shore breeze and some swell might be more your thing. For us paddle surfers, this is a lean run. The reef and point setup needs decent conditions, and they just aren’t lining up. I’d wait for the next system.
Rusty.
