Main Beach Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Main Beach, because it’s been a while since we’ve had a proper glassy session, and this stretch looks like it’s going to test our patience.

Right off the bat, the water is a bit of a shocker – it’s sitting at 62°, which is a solid 4° colder than average for this time of year. That’s a proper full wetsuit and booties situation, so don’t even think about a spring suit.

The forecast starts with a big sigh. From Thursday, the 6th of August right through till the end of Sunday, the 9th, we’re looking at a washout. We’ve got a massive WSW groundswell, but the wind is a nightmare – cross-onshore, onshore, and even a near gale on Saturday hitting 31 mph. The wave energy is off the charts, but it’s all blown out, choppy, and messy. Not worth paddling out. The swell is over 8 feet, so it’s for experts only if you were daft enough to try, but honestly, the wind will ruin it.

Monday the 10th is more of the same – strong winds and messy seas. But then, we get a glimmer. Tuesday the 11th of August is the standout. The swell is still big, with WSW groundswell hitting 15 feet and a very long period of 17 seconds. The combined energy is massive. But the wind swings SSE at 13 mph, blowing clean and cross-offshore. The caveat here is that the swell is so big, it’s likely too big for Main Beach, which is a beach/groyne set-up. That long period groundswell is going to be breaking straight and fast, making it really only for the experts. The text says the conditions are favorable, but the size is the issue. If you’re an experienced charger, this is your window. Expect crowds, as it’s often busy.

Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th offer a bit of a reprieve. The swell drops to around 6 to 7 feet, still with that long period groundswell. Thursday morning the 13th is looking cleaner with light NE cross-offshore wind, and the data says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. Friday the 14th morning is also a nice prospect with similar conditions – clean, 7 foot swell, and light ENE winds. This is a decent option for the more experienced crew.

After that, we hit another rough patch. From Sunday the 16th through to Tuesday the 18th, the wind is back onshore and cross-onshore, with the swell staying solid and messy. Not good.

Then, look at Wednesday the 19th. The afternoon shows a huge 12 foot swell from the WSW with a very long 18 second period. The wind is cross-shore at 13 mph, and the conditions are favorable for wind and tide, but again, it’s flagged as potentially too big for the break. It’s a late call for the big-wave crew.

Finally, Thursday the 20th of August morning is a real beauty. The swell drops to a manageable 7 feet, still with a good 16 second period. The wind is a light 6 mph from the north, cross-offshore, and the data says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. This is the other best bet in the window. It’s clean and punchy. Friday the 21st afternoon looks like a real treat, too – 8 feet from the SW, glassy conditions with no wind, but the swell direction is a bit different.

So, to sum it up: the best of the bunch is Tuesday the 11th of August for the thrill-seekers who can handle a big, clean, powerful groundswell, and Thursday the 20th of August morning for a cleaner, slightly smaller session. For the rest, it’s a lot of waiting for the wind to play ball.
