The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Madiha Right is a bit of a mixed bag, and you’re gonna have to wait a while for anything decent. The first week or so is mostly a write-off, with messy cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. The real standout, and the only one I’m getting excited about, comes in the second week.

Right now, from Saturday 8 August through to about Monday 11 August, the swell is there but the wind is all wrong. We’ve got a solid groundswell pushing in – 6 ft from the S with a long 16 second period, giving us strong wave energy (2055) – but the cross-onshore breeze from the W at 15 mph is just chopping it up. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. It’s a shame, because Madiha Right is a reef break that loves that SW swell direction, but the conditions are just poor.

Sunday 9 August is a little better – the wind eases into a cross-shore, still moderate, with swell dropping to 3 ft in the morning and 6 ft in the afternoon. The afternoon has a 17 second period (2189 energy), but it’s still only marginal. Not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate.

Monday 10 August through to Sunday 16 August is a long stretch of mediocrity. Swell sticks around 4 ft to 5 ft, mostly from the SSE, with periods dropping to 11 seconds. Energy falls into the 600-1400 range, weak to moderate. The wind stays cross-shore or cross-on, and the forecast keeps saying “marginal.” Crowds are possible at this spot, but honestly, I don’t think many will be out. It’s just not doing it.

Now, here’s the bit worth waiting for. Tuesday 18 August and Wednesday 19 August look like the best on offer. The swell jumps to 7 ft–7 ft from the SSW, with a long 17 second period, giving us strong wave energy (3160 and 3116). That’s groundswell with real push. The wind is cross-shore, not clean offshore, but it’s manageable. The problem is that this is a reef break, and with a 7 ft swell and a long period, the waves will be powerful and heavy – definitely for experienced surfers only. Beginners should stay well clear. Thursday 20 August eases to 6 ft, still from the SSW, but the wind picks up again.

After that, Friday 21 August to Sunday 23 August fades back into poor conditions – cross-onshore winds, choppy waves, and the swell drops to 4 ft-5 ft. Not worth it.

So, the standout session is the morning of Tuesday 18 August. The swell is big, the energy is high, and despite the cross-shore wind, it’s the cleanest and most powerful we’ll see in this whole 16-day window. If you’re an expert, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for not much.

Rusty.
