The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got the full 16-day window for Les Conches to look at, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run. The pattern is mostly small, messy, and onshore. There’s no real standout period, and the best we can hope for are a few fleeting windows of clean, rideable waves.
Let’s start with the first bit of surf that’s worth paddling out for. On Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the W with a 9-second period and only 52 units of combined energy (weak). The wind is light from the E, offshore, and the water is clean. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see for a while. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year. For a beginner spot, it’s a gentle, safe session.
Then we hit a big gap. From Saturday afternoon through to Tuesday morning, the 25th, the swell drops away and the wind isn’t kind. The best of that gap is Tuesday morning with a 2ft, short-period SSW swell (4 secs) and clean conditions, but the energy is only 23 units – it’s barely a ripple.
We get a little bump on Wednesday morning, the 26th of August. A 3ft W swell with a 7-second period, 116 units of combined energy (weak), and clean conditions with a light ESE breeze. It’s surfable, but very ordinary – you’ll be hunting for the small ones.
The third week of the forecast gets a bit more interesting size-wise, but the quality drops. From Thursday the 27th onward, the swell builds, but it’s accompanied by strong onshore and cross-onshore winds. Thursday afternoon sees a 6ft WSW swell (9 secs, 417 units moderate energy) but it’s onshore and messy. By Friday the 28th of August, the swell peaks at 7ft from the WSW (9 secs, 766 units strong energy), but it’s blown out with strong onshore winds. This is expert-only territory size-wise, but the conditions are so poor it’s barely worth a look. That setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Following that, the swell backs off again, but the wind stays problematic. Through the end of August and into the first few days of September, it’s mostly small, onshore, and choppy. There’s a brief moment on Thursday morning, the 3rd of September, with a 1.0ft WSW swell, clean and light offshore from the SE, but the energy is only 24 units – it’s almost flat.
The final day in the window, Saturday the 5th of September, shows a 1ft swell from the WSW with a long 14-second period (125 units weak energy). The wind is light cross-onshore. The long period means it’ll have some push, but the size is tiny. It’s a tease.
Bottom line: there’s no single day I’d call a standout. The best call is Saturday morning, August 22nd – it’s the cleanest, most manageable surf for the beginner crowd, with a tiny 2ft W swell and light offshore E wind. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for very little. Keep the board waxed and watch the forecast, because it can’t stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
