The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. This forecast for Les Conches is a long, drawn-out tale of woe for the next couple of weeks, and I’m not going to sugar-coat it. We’re looking at a grim stretch ahead, so don’t go waxing up your boards just yet.
The next week and a half are a total write-off. We’re talking day after day of small, weak, onshore junk. The swell energy is mostly pathetic, reading single digits and low double digits for the most part, like 10 to 89. Waves are barely breaking, and when they do, it’s sloppy and blown out. The wind is almost always cross-on or straight onshore, chopping up whatever tiny lines try to form. The first hint of something a little bigger comes late on Friday the 21st with a bump to 3ft, and the energy climbs to 275, but it’s still onshore and messy. Don’t get excited.
The gap of poor surf stretches right through to the end of the month. There’s a glimmer of cleaner conditions on the 23rd and 24th with some offshore and cross-off winds, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft to 1ft. Not surfable. We are in a proper flat spell.
Now, looking further out, there is a distant light at the end of this very long, flat tunnel. We’re talking about Tuesday, September 1st. The morning is still junk, but the afternoon shows a real pulse of energy arriving. The swell jumps to 6ft from the W, with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1115 – that’s strong, very strong wave energy. It’s a real groundswell. However, the wind is only a light cross-shore, which is good, but the surf report says it’s marginal due to questionable tide conditions. It’s promising, but we’re a week away, so treat it as a possibility, not a promise. The following day, Wednesday the 2nd, holds some size too, with 4ft to 5ft and energy from 326 to 819, but the wind turns onshore again, chopping it up. This looks more like a powerful, lumpy mess than clean surf.
The fact is, there are no standout days on offer here. The ones with size have bad wind, and the ones with good wind have no size. It’s a frustrating outlook for a place that’s usually pretty consistent. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it change, but I can only call it as I see it.
For the first break we mention, the water temp is 71°F which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing waiting for something to happen.
Honestly, the way the wind and swell setup looks for most of this, especially around the 26th and 28th with winds up to 22 mph, Les Conches is going to be more interesting for the kite crew than for us paddle surfers. For most of the window, you’re better off finding another hobby. Keep your head up, the long-range signal shows life, but it’s a week and a half of flatness before we get there.
This is Rusty, signing off. See you in the water when there’s something to ride.
