Howdy, Rusty here again. Got to level with you—this stretch we’re staring at is a tough nut. The water temp is sitting at 72°F, which is way warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s firing.
We’ve got a long dry spell ahead. From today, Sunday July 12th, all the way through to Saturday July 25th, there’s barely a whisper of surf worth paddling for at Les Conches. That’s a solid two-week gap of poor conditions and weak energy. The swell heights are puny—0.7ft to 3ft—and the winds are mostly cross-onshore or onshore, leaving the surface choppy and lumpy. Even the glassy calm Sunday afternoon on the 12th only gave us 1.0ft. Not worth wetting a wetsuit.
There’s a little tease on Sunday July 19th morning, with a clean offshore breeze from the ENE at 12 mph over a 2ft west swell, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s weak and gutless. Combined energy is only 20. Not a standout.
Then, on Thursday July 23rd, things perk up a bit. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the WSW with a 6-second period, pushing the combined energy to 132—our first moderate reading. Winds are light cross-onshore. By the afternoon, it jumps to 6ft from the same direction, period 7 seconds, and energy hits 362. That’s the standout of the whole 16-day window. The swell has some size, but at 6ft it’s getting into the zone where beginners will struggle. The wind, though, is onshore and fresh at 16 mph, so the surface will be messy. The morning with 4ft and light winds is the better call for cleaner lines, even if it’s not huge.
Friday July 24th and Saturday July 25th back off again, with 3ft to 3ft swell and fresh, lumpy cross-onshore winds. Not worth it.
Finally, on Monday July 27th—over two weeks away—we get the best conditions of the whole run. The morning shows 2ft from the west, with a 9-second period and a clean offshore breeze from the east at 6 mph. Combined energy is 55, still weak, but that offshore wind will make the tiny waves glassy and rideable. The afternoon gets ruined by the onshore again, so if you’re hanging for a surf, that Monday morning is your best bet.
To sum it up: don’t bother for the next two weeks unless you’re really keen. The only standout is Thursday July 23rd morning for the biggest swell, but it’s not clean. The real one to watch is Monday July 27th morning—clean, small, and surfable.
Rusty.
