The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got one spot holding the fort, and it’s looking pretty tasty for a solid run of clean, groomed waves. The overall pattern is a long stretch of clean mornings, with the wind backing off and letting the swell do the talking.

The water here is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. You’ll barely need a spring suit.

La Paz is the only game in town, and it’s a reef and point setup that loves a good SSW swell. The first standout kicks off bright and early on Saturday morning, August 1st. We’ve got a 3ft SSW groundswell at 13 seconds, and the wind is glassy out of the SE. The energy is solid at 458, and it will be perfect for beginners – small, clean, and forgiving.

Sunday morning, August 2nd, the glass comes back with a 2ft SW groundswell. It’s a touch smaller but still clean and fun.

The real highlight, though, is shaping up around Friday, August 7th. The swell builds, and both the morning and afternoon sessions have very long period groundswell out of the SSW at 18 seconds, with a solid energy of 592 and 604. The morning is glassy, the afternoon is glassy – that’s a rare clean double-header. For a point and reef like La Paz, that long period is going to wrap in beautifully, bringing proper, lined-up waves. These are likely the best conditions on offer, though long period like this can straighten out on beach breaks – but here, it’s gold.

Saturday, August 8th, keeps the energy high. Morning winds go offshore from the NNE with a 3ft SSW groundswell at 16 seconds. The energy cranks up to 746 – right in the moderate-to-strong bracket. This one will have some push, still manageable for intermediates, but it’s looking clean and powerful.

A couple of weeks out, on Friday, August 14th, there’s another promising morning. Offshore NNE wind, a 2ft SSW swell but with a 19-second period – that’s as long as it gets. Energy is 555. It’s a smaller wave, but that period means it will have serious push and shape for the point.

The crowds are listed as sometimes, so expect a few others out on these clean days, but it’s not the zoo you see at some spots.

Over the 16-day window, you’ll notice the afternoons tend to get chopped up by onshore wind, but the mornings are persistently clean. The biggest gap is just the afternoons – the mornings are almost a sure thing.

Rusty.
