Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the table for La Cote Sauvage over the next couple of weeks. I’ve been staring at the charts and, well, this is a tough one to write. The honest truth is, we’re looking at a long, drawn-out stretch of very quiet conditions. There’s not a single session in the whole 16-day window that I’d call a winner. The first real blank run hits us from right now, pushing through the coming days with next to nothing. We’re talking about a good week and more where the swell is tiny and the wind is just messy.
The water is sitting at 71°F which is a good 4°F warmer than normal for the time of year – feels like a bit of a freak warm spell.
Looking at the first couple of days, you’ve got Sunday the 5th starting with a pitiful 1 ft from the W and a period of 10 seconds. The energy is weak as water at 31, and while the NNE wind is cross-offshore, it’s just not enough to save it. The afternoon gets worse with a 3 ft NW windswell, but that NW breeze at 30 km/h is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy. Combine that with the onshore wind and small swell, and you can forget about it. This pattern just keeps repeating.
Monday the 6th has that 1.0 ft WNW swell in the morning and a weak 17 energy score. Glassy offshore wind from the E is a tease, but there’s no power to work with. Every day after that is a carbon copy – tiny swell, mostly under 2 ft, and a cross-onshore or onshore wind from the NW quarter. The combined energy readings barely ever crack three digits; the highest is 124 on Tuesday afternoon the 14th with a 2 ft NW swell and a 12-second period, but that’s still only moderate energy and it’s got a moderate cross-onshore wind ruining it. A long period like that is better for a point or reef, but here it’s just messy.
We do see a brief moment of peace on Thursday morning the 16th – glassy conditions with a Slight air from the NNE and 1.0 ft. It’s clean, but you’d be scratching for anything rideable. The Saturday the 18th morning has a 1 ft W swell with a cross-offshore NNE breeze at 5 km/h and clean conditions, but again, minimal energy at 16. It’s not surfable, just clean water.
The only standout, and I use that term loosely, is that Tuesday the 14th afternoon. That 2 ft from the NW with a 12-second period is the biggest groundswell we see, with 124 combined energy. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but the 25 km/h NW wind is moderate cross-onshore and choppy. For a beginner beach break like La Cote Sauvage, that’s just messy and not fun. The direction (NW) is close to the optimum W, but the wind kills it.
Look, the reality is the whole 16-day window is a write-off for a decent paddle. The swell is consistently tiny, the wind is mostly wrong, and the quality is rated as poor across every single session. If you’re a kite surfer, that 3 ft with a fresh cross-onshore might give you something to do on Sunday the 5th afternoon or Wednesday the 15th afternoon, but for a surfer, it’s a no-go. For an area this exposed to the Atlantic, a blank run like this is normal enough, but it still stings.
Rusty.
