The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a bit of a slow grind. We’re looking at a stretch of small, weak, and mostly messy surf that doesn’t really get going for a while. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, with tiny swell and mostly cross-onshore winds messing things up. The water is sitting at a warm 81°, which is about a degree and a half above the norm for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a nice little bonus.

Things start to show a pulse around the 8th of August. Saturday afternoon at Kona Tiki (reef) we get a little window of opportunity. The swell is a tiny 1ft from the SSW, but the wind goes glassy, and the combined energy is moderate (204). It’s not going to be big, but it’ll be clean. That’s a rare treat.

The real standout, if you can call it that, looks like Wednesday the 12th of August. The swell picks up to 3ft from the S, with a long period of 18 seconds (groundswell). The combined energy jumps up to a moderate 900. This is the best-looking energy of the whole period. The catch? The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be perfect. But for a reef break, that long-period S swell will wrap in and offer some decent shape. It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the pick of the bunch.

Later in the period, around the 17th and 18th of August, we see a few more glassy or clean windows appear. The 17th has a 2ft S swell with glassy conditions in the afternoon – that’s your best bet for a clean, small-wave session. The 18th afternoon has a clean 2ft W swell with a cross-off breeze. The energy is still moderate (254).

Overall, don’t expect any bombs. The consistent message is small, marginal surf. The best days are the 12th for some size and energy, and the 17th for the cleanest conditions. You’ll be scratching for waves, but if you’re patient, there’ll be a few.
