The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming in.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim run. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window and honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The whole period is a write-off. The surf just isn’t there, and when there is a tiny bump, the wind or conditions trash it. This kind of blank run is pretty normal for the area, so don’t let it get you down too much—forecasts can change.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are a mess. A risk of thunderstorms and light rain with cross-onshore winds as strong as 19 mph whipping the surface into a lumpy, choppy state. The swell is tiny, around 2 ft to 3 ft, and the period is a short, weak 4 to 6 seconds. The combined wave energy is pitiful, so there’s just no power. It’s a total no-go.
Saturday the 22nd doesn't get any better. Still cross-onshore winds, this time from the NW at 16-19 mph, with a 4 ft swell at 7 seconds. It’s lumpy and poor. Energy gets up to a still-weak figure, but that means nothing with the wind howling onshore.
We get a clearing trend from Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th, with the wind going offshore at times, getting clean. The problem? The swell completely dies. We’re talking 0.7 ft to 3 ft of weak, short-period junk. The energy drops to a pathetic low—literally nothing to ride.
Wednesday the 26th sees the swell vanish completely, with a 0.3 ft NW groundswell at 11 seconds, but it’s just not enough to break. Clean, sure, but flat.
From Thursday the 27th through to the end of the forecast, it’s a relentless drumbeat of poor conditions. We get a few pulses of bigger swell heading into Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th, with heights around 5 ft and combined energy climbing to a moderate level. The waves are there, but the wind is a cruel cross-onshore mess at 19-25 mph. The period is only 7-8 seconds, so it’s just a wind-blown, lumpy shorebreak. At a beach/breakwater setup like Hargen, this is more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session.
Early September brings more of the same. A quick spike of strong onshore wind on Tuesday the 1st with no real swell, then another pulse of 5 ft swell on Wednesday the 2nd but again, the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. A bit of cleaner groundswell on Thursday the 3rd (up to 4 ft, 8 seconds), but still with a fresh cross-onshore breeze. It’s just never clean.
So there you have it, mate. A full 16 days of shut-out. No standouts, no hope, just a series of near-misses and poor luck. Keep the board in the car just in case a surprise clean day rolls in, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
