The Lowdown
Right, let’s talk about Hargen. This is a beach/breakwater setup, and it’s exposed to the swell. The water temperature is sittin’ at 69° right now, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a fair bit warmer than you’d expect, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit you own early on.
Alright, lookin’ through the whole 16-day window, and I’m gonna be straight with you: it’s pretty grim. For the first week, from Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through to the end of the month, the surf is just poor. The scores are zeros across the board. There’s no point in trying to sugarcoat it. The first few days have some waist-high swell, around 3ft to 4ft from the NNW and NW, but the wind is a cross-on mess, and the energy is weak (93 to 126). It’s choppy and lumpy.
Monday the 24th sees a small window of clean surf with a cross-off breeze, but the swell drops right away to 1ft to 2ft, and the energy is pathetic (20 to 23). You’d be bobbin’ around on a lake. Then Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th go even smaller, with tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves. There’s a bit of offshore wind on Tuesday, but with no swell to push, it’s a total write-off. From Thursday the 27th, it nearly flatlines for a couple of days, with zero energy.
The second week starts to see a little more life, but it’s still not something to get excited about. Friday the 28th of August, we get a bump of 3ft to 3ft from the WSW, but the wind is cross-on and the energy is still weak (49 to 75). Saturday the 29th is similar, with more cross-on breezes and a bit of rain. The whole first half of September sees a persistent pattern of 3ft to 4ft swell from the west and west-northwest, but it’s constantly blown out by fresh to strong breezes (18 to 28 mph) from the same direction. The energy climbs to moderate on the 5th of September (139 to 170), so there’s some push there, but the wind is ripping onshore or cross-on, making it messy and lumpy. It’s not a surfable proposition for a paddle board.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is that the spot does get a bit of swell energy in the second week, but the wind is completely against it. For a beach/breakwater setup with that much wind and swell, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The surf is poor from start to finish, and there’s not a single day I’d recommend paddling out. It’s a dry spell, and for a place like this, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
