The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat and a coffee, because I’ve stared at the charts for Hargen and I gotta be straight with you—there’s not a single decent wave in the whole 16-day window. The outlook is a barren run from July 16th all the way through to July 31st. Every single session is marked as poor surf conditions, and the scores are a big fat zero. It’s a tough stretch.
The first few days are a write-off. Thursday the 16th is tiny with a 1ft NNE windswell, period a miserable 3 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 3. The wind is a messy cross-off or cross, so you’re looking at a choppy, weak surface. Friday and Saturday the 17th and 18th see a slight bump, but the wind gets nasty—cross-on from the NW and NNW at 15-19 mph, making everything lumpy and poor. The swell height creeps up to 4ft on Saturday afternoon, and the energy hits 150 (moderate), but it’s all blown out and messy. The period is still short, around 8 seconds, so no real shape.
The following week doesn’t offer any relief. From Monday the 20th through to Sunday the 26th, we’re stuck with similar cross-on winds and inconsistent, weak swell. The best energy comes on Wednesday the 22nd with 4ft swell and 157 energy, but again, the wind is onshore from the NNW at 15 mph, ruining any chance of a clean wave. The period never gets above 9 seconds, and most days it’s in the 4-7 second range, which is pure windswell junk. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
The last few days, from the 27th to the 31st, are a sad fade-out. Tiny swell, often under 2ft, with energy readings in the single digits or low twenties. The wind is all over the place—cross, cross-on, and on the 31st we finally get a glassy morning, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0ft from the NW with a 6-second period. It’s a flat, glassy lake, not surf.
Look, I’m a local, and I know Hargen is a beach/breakwater setup exposed to a narrow window of swell. When the wind is wrong, it’s just not happening. The consistent cross-on wind from the NW and NNW just kills any chance of a wave. The best I can say is that this kind of blank run isn’t that unusual for the area—it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to chase. Hang your board up for a couple of weeks.
