The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty grim stretch. The whole 16-day window is basically one long flat spell with a few tiny bumps that never turn into anything rideable. There’s no proper surf to get excited about. The only break on the radar is Hadromy - Marina Beach, a point break that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the WNW, which is the direction the swell is trying to come from. But it’s just not happening.

Right from the start on Friday morning, August 7th, we’ve got a tiny 2 ft swell out of the WNW with a period of just 6 seconds and weak combined energy of only 18. The wind is cross from the SW at 9 mph, and it’s already marked as poor surf conditions. It doesn’t get any better. Saturday the 8th is similar—2 ft, 6-second period, and increasing energy to 31 but still weak, with cross winds. Sunday the 9th is the same story: 3 ft, 7-second period, 56 energy, but cross-on winds.

The water temperature is sitting at 85°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s slightly out of the ordinary.

We roll through the whole first week with nothing but tiny, short-period swells (1 ft to 3 ft) and periods of 5 to 7 seconds. The combined energy stays in the weak range—mostly below 56. The wind is almost always cross, cross-on, or onshore, so even if there was a little push, it would be chopped up. Monday morning the 10th is glassy but only 1 ft—too small to bother.

The second week is more of the same. Monday the 17th sees a slight bump to 4 ft with a 7-second period and combined energy climbing to 135 (moderate wave energy now), but it’s still cross-on with a gentle breeze, and the comment is poor surf conditions. Tuesday the 18th is 3 ft with 105 energy, still cross. Wednesday the 19th morning is glassy—dead calm—but the swell is only 2 ft, so it’s flat and clean, not surfable.

After that, it fades back to tiny 1 ft to 2 ft waves for the rest of the outlook through to Saturday the 22nd. The combined energy drops back to weak numbers like 13 to 40. The wind is mostly light cross or onshore. Nothing ever clicks.

So here’s the truth: there is no standout. There is no best day. The whole 16 days is a write-off for paddle surfing. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger onshore afternoon winds on days like Friday the 7th, Saturday the 8th, and Sunday the 9th could be more interesting, but for a surfboard, it’s a no-go. The break is a point, so it usually needs a bit more direction and power, and it’s just not getting it.

This kind of blank run isn’t unusual for the area. The consistency is only “fairly consistent” at best, and when the swell is this weak and short-period, it just doesn’t deliver. Forecasts can always change, but right now, don’t bother waxing up.

Rusty.
